We have become estranged from the cosmic movements, according to Bataille. We are confined by the error linked to the representation of ‘the stationary earth’. We have negated the immersive immanence of the whole and made nature into a fixed world of tools and things. How then do we recognise ourselves as part of the ‘rapture of the heavens’? Bataille urges us to consider life as a solar phenomenon, the free play of solar energy on the earth. This paper argues (...) how Bataille’s cosmic vision anticipates both planetary and ecological thinking. This entails a base materialism of difference based on a radical Nietzschean and Heraclitean theory of becoming and flux. This thought is developed along Bataillean concepts such as the movement of the whole, the labyrinthine, and compound beings, ipseity, as well as the concept of a communifying movement. This materialism paired with Vladimir Vernadsky’s biosphere lays the foundation for the laws of the general economy, which also constitutes an economy inclusive of a general ecology: a tragic vision of Gaia and Dionysos. The first step in education's long road to respectability lay in the ability of its proponents to demonstrate that it was worthy of collaborating with traditional disciplines in the syllabus of higher learning. The universities where the infant discipline of education was promoted benefited from scholars who engaged in teaching and research with enthusiasm and preached the gospel of scientific education. These schools-Teachers College/Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and Stanford University-gained a reputation as oases of pedagogical (...) knowledge. Soon, public and private colleges alike introduced professional academic programs for the preparation of teachers. Foremost among the subjects for these programs was education philosophy, with its long history and the impeccable credentials of its ancient and modern expositors. Although the principal focus of this study is the history of educational philosophy in colleges and universities, it also recognizes educational philosophy's antecedents. This article begins by examining the bad reputation humor traditionally had in philosophy and education. Two of the main charges against humor—that it is hostile and irresponsible—are linked to the Superiority Theory. That theory is critiqued and two other theories of laughter are presented—the Relief Theory and the Incongruity Theory. In the Relief Theory, laughter is a release of pent-up nervous energy. In the Incongruity Theory, humor is the enjoyment of something that violates ordinary mental patterns and expectations. The (...) development of the Incongruity Theory is traced in thinkers like Aristotle, Kant, Schopenhauer and Kierkegaard, and refinements are suggested to the theory. The Incongruity Theory, it is argued, helps us to appreciate the affinity between philosophy and humor, especially the genre known as stand-up comedy. Biesta has suggested that education after humanism should be interested in existence, not essence, in what the subject can do, not in what the subject is—the truth about the subject—and this is the way inspired by Foucault and Levinas. In this article, I analyze Foucault’s alleged deconstruction and reconfiguration of the subject and Levinas’ approach to human subjectivity and suggest that Foucault’s early and later works have already implied certain concepts of the subject and that Levinas’ approach to human (...) subjectivity does not, as has often been perceived in educational circles, avoid theorizing about human subjectivity. Drawing on the French philosophy of difference, particularly Levinas’ ideas of alterity and subjectivity, I propose a post-humanist subject as a singular existence that ‘announces, promises, and at the same time conceals’, that cannot be exhausted, totalized, and replicated. The singular and unique subject, open and responsible to the world and beyond, is indispensible to the educational mission of subjectification. (shrink)

Complexity theory challenges educational philosophy to reconsider accepted paradigms of teaching, learning and educational research. However, though attractive, not least because of its critique of positivism, its affinity to Dewey and Habermas, and its arguments for openness, diversity, relationships, agency and creativity, the theory is not without its difficulties. These are seen to lie in terms of complexity theory's nature, status, methodology, utility and contribution to the philosophy of education, being a descriptive theory that is easily misunderstood as a (...) prescriptive theory, silent on key issues of values and ethics that educational philosophy should embrace, of questionable internal consistency, and of limited ‘added value’ in educational philosophy. The article uses the materialist dialectic method with broad and specific historical principles to evaluate Vietnamese education with opportunities and challenges in the current integration process by studying Pragmatism’s philosophical education. The article found that the theory of education by Pragmatism clarifies the role of social educational institutions – schools in the educational process. In parallel, it is a teacher with educational methods and programs that are the basis for educating learners to become comprehensive citizens in the future. And students are the goal and the product that the educational philosophy needs to implement. Research results, the article clarifies the need to develop an educational philosophy for Vietnamese people to build comprehensively in the socialist orientation in the current globalization context. 이 논문은 ‘『화엄경』 『십지품』에 담긴 교학사상’에 대하여 살펴본 글이다. 주지하다시피, 『화엄경』 『십지품』은 다양한 형태의 불교의 교학 사상들이 含意되어 있다. 특히 『십지품』에서는 성불하고자 한다면 누구든지 십지보살단계에 따라 부지런히 수행에 전념해야 할 것을 강조하고 있는 것이 특징이다. 따라서 십지에 담긴 교학사상의 핵심을 탐구하는 것은 유의미하다고 판단된다. 그 결과를 정리해보면 첫째, 십지에 들어가기 위해서는 초지가 가장 기본적인 전제가 된다는 것이다. 반드시 地의 기본이 되는 초지가 원만 구족되어야만 第二地가 있으며, 내지 第十地에 이를 수 있다는 것이다. 둘째, 각 지에는 수행해야 할 교학의 내용들이 구체적으로 언급되어 (...) 있다는 것이다. 셋째, 『십지품』에 담긴 교학사상에는 대승보살이 自利利他의 주요 실천덕목 10바라밀과 사섭법 그리고 사무량심 등의 핵심교의들이 부처님의 如來智를 나타내기 위한 실천과정이 열 단계로 明示되어 있다는 것이다. 넷째, 『十地品』에 담긴 교학사상의 가르침은 결국 모든 중생은 모두 부처가 될 수 있다는 화엄의 일승보살도의 정신이 含意되어 있다는 것이다. 이것은 마지막 법운지를 통해 여실히 드러나고 있는데, 그것은 十地와 바다의 열 가지 이익과 배대한 경문에서 확인할 수 있다. 따라서 『화엄경』 『十地品』에 담긴 십지사상은 대승불교의 근간을 이루는 핵심사상으로써 손색이 없을 뿐 아니라, 佛敎敎學史에서 있어서도 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있기에 간과해서는 안 될 것이다. 왜냐하면 十地는 보살이 菩提로 가는 가장 좋은 길이며, 또한 청정한 법․광명의 활로이고, 교학으로서 뿐만 아니라 교학의 이면에는 강한 실천적인 수행의 측면이 함의되어 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있기 때문이다. The overall question addressed in this article is,‘What kind of philosophy of education is relevant to educational policy makers?’ The article focuses on the following four themes: The meanings attached to the term philosophy by philosophers themselves; the meanings attached to the term philosophy by policy makers; the difference place and time makes to these meanings; how these different meanings affect the possibility of philosophy influencing policy.The question is addressed using philosophical methods and empirical evidence from conversations and conversational (...) interviews with some philosophers of education and other educational researchers.The argument begins with an investigation of different ways of understanding philosophy and philosophy of education in relation to education and educational policy. It then examines first the current policy context and secondly some evidence about the practices of policy makers in relation to ideas and to research. It goes on to present some of the findings from the conversational evidence.The article is drawn together in the penultimate section where I make some suggestions about possible fruitful relationships between doing philosophy and policy making. BALA 코스는 인문학과 경영학을 융합한 과정으로, 경영학을 부전공으로 이수하고 졸업 후 관련 직종으로 진출하고자 하는 학생들에게 관련 직종에서 요구되는 인문학적 직무 역량을 함양할 수 있는 교육 프로그램을 제공한다. 퀸즈 칼리지의 BALA 코스는 중소형 규모의 대학이 갖는 강점들을 결합한 인문 융복합 철학 교육 프로그램을 운영하고 있다는 점에서 주목할 만하다.BR 국내 사례로는 우선 부산외국어대학교 만오교양대학에서 운영하고 있는 “아르케 아너프로그램(AHP)”을 살펴보았다. AHP는 교양교육 이념으로서 아르케 교양의 심화 교육을 위해 철학을 중심으로 자체 교육 프로그램을 진행하고 있으며, 이 과정을 이수한 학생에게는 AHP 학사학위를 부여한다. AHP 과정을 이수하는 학생들은 담당 교수의 지도 하에 개인별 학습 로드맵을 작성할 수 있으며, 심화된 교과 및 비교과 프로그램에 참여하는 특전을 얻는다. 다음으로 “대학 인문역량 강화사업(CORE 사업)” 중에서 “인문기반 융합전공”이 운용하는 철학 및 인문학 과정을, 교과목을 중심으로, 살펴보았다. 이 사업의 목적에 따라 융합전공을 이수하는 학생들은 교양 과목보다 심화된 인문학적 소양, 특히 철학적 사고력과 통찰력을 함양할 수 있다. 국내 사례로 소개한 이 두 프로그램을 아직 초기 단계이기 때문에 그 성과를 검토하기는 어렵지만, 정부와 대학의 장기적인 전망 속에서 지속적인 관심과 지원이 요구된다. This article offers a detailed reading Gascoigne and Thornton’s book Tacit Knowledge, which aims to account for the tacitness of tacit knowledge while preserving its status as knowledge proper. I take issue with their characterization and rejection of the existential-phenomenological Background—which they presuppose even as they dismiss—and their claim that TK can be articulated “from within”—which betrays a residual Cartesianism, the result of their elision of conceptuality and propositionality. Knowledgeable acts instantiate capacities which we might know we have and of (...) which we can be aware, but which are not propositionally structured at their “core”. Nevertheless, propositionality is necessary to what Robert Brandom calls, in Making It Explicit and Articulating Reasons, “explicitation”, which notion also presupposes a tacit dimension, which is, simply, the embodied person, without which no conception of knowledge can get any purchase. On my view, there is no knowledgeable act that can be understood as such separately from the notion of skilled corporeal performance. The account I offer cannot make sense of so-called “knowledge-based” education, as opposed to systems and styles which supposedly privilege “contentless” skills over and above “knowledge”, because on the phenomenological and inferentialist lines I endorse, neither the concepts “knowledge” nor “skill” has any purchase or meaning without the other. This paper explores relationships between environment and education after the Covid-19 pandemic through the lens of philosophy of education in a new key developed by Michael Peters and the Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia. The paper is collectively written by 15 authors who responded to the question: Who remembers Greta Thunberg? Their answers are classified into four main themes and corresponding sections. The first section, ‘As we bake the earth, let's try and bake it from scratch’, (...) gathers wider philosophical considerations about the intersection between environment, education, and the pandemic. The second section, ‘Bump in the road or a catalyst for structural change?’, looks more closely into issues pertaining to education. The third section, ‘If you choose to fail us, we will never forgive you’, focuses to Greta Thunberg’s messages and their responses. The last section, ‘Towards a new normal’, explores future scenarios and develops recommendations for critical emancipatory action. The concluding part brings these insights together, showing that resulting synergy between the answers offers much more then the sum of articles’ parts. With its ethos of collectivity, interconnectedness, and solidarity, philosophy of education in a new key is a crucial tool for development of post-pandemic education. (shrink)
