Este artículo se propone, en primer lugar, analizar algunos de los cambios producidos en el concepto de naturaleza humana a lo largo de la historia y, en segundo lugar, realizar una reflexión bioética acerca de las intervenciones planteadas por el transhumanismo y el enhancement o mejoramiento humano. Después de repasar la génesis y principales cambios transcendentales del concepto de physis aplicado al hombre, concluiremos que hoy en día el concepto de naturaleza humana, tal y como lo entiende el transhumanismo, podría (...) alinearse por analogía con la modernidad líquida. Entenderíamos, así, la naturaleza humana como una “naturaleza líquida”, permanentemente en cambio. Esto plantea numerosos problemas, no solo de índole ética o biomédica, sino sobre todo de carácter antropológico y metafísico, en el modo de entender al hombre, y condiciona toda valoración bioética acerca de las intervenciones que supuestamente mejoran la humanidad. Hemos recogido hasta aquí algunas de las notas características de la naturaleza humana: su inteligencia, su dimensión social, histórica, biográfica y cultural. Se podrían señalar otros rasgos comunes a todo ser humano como la libertad, la dignidad, la finitud y la vulnerabilidad. No teníamos la pretensión de ser exhaustivos sino de apuntar una tercera vía en la compresión de la naturaleza humana. Es posible una tercera vía, que recoge algunos elementos desde el pensamiento clásico a nuestros días, pasando por autores (...) contemporáneos como Zubiri, personalistas y demás, y hacer una propuesta de naturaleza humana como aquello que hace al humano ser quien es y no otro animal cualquiera. La especificidad de lo humano es innegable, y su irreductibilidad a materia queda en el horizonte como un punto de fuga, donde quizá haya que invocar la dimensión del enigma o el misterio, con palabras del Profesor Miguel García-Baró, y recuperar la verticalidad del ser humano, el horizonte último de compresión acerca de quién es, de su sentido y significado. «La ciencia es cumulativa, la sabiduría no», afirmó Jérôme Lejeune. La ciencia progresa exponencialmente, a una velocidad acelerada, el transhumanismo es prueba de ello; por contrario, la sabiduría no. El desarrollo de la razón técnico-instrumental está siendo muy rápido y acelerado; la razón sapiencial, en cambio, procede lentamente, sin capacidad de analizar con calma y detalle todo lo que implican estos cambios. Se nos exige una mayor reflexión acerca de quiénes somos y hacia dónde vamos como especie. El transhumanismo y el posthumanismo se plantean la cuestión de la utilidad, pero no aquellas del significado y el sentido último, o primero, de la existencia humana. (shrink)

Este libro estudia cuestiones pertenecientes al campo de la lógica aplicada, concretamente de teoría de la argumentación informal. Abarca el análisis de los principales tipos de errores por incom­petencia argumentativa a partir de un enfoque nor­mativo actualizado y con una propuesta de taxono­mía de falacias lógicas informales basada en los cri­terios básicos de buena argumentación. Se identifi­can, describen y ejemplifican, con textos de varios niveles de dificultad, las falacias más habituales (en­tre ellas, las falacias «ad hominem, ad populum, petitio principii», (...) por inducción precipitada, falsa analogía, falso dilema) presentes en diferentes interacciones lin­güísticas interpersonales (documentos políticos, pe­riodísticos, pseudocientíficos, filosóficos) formu­ladas en lenguajes naturales. A lo largo del libro, los principales epígrafes se ilustran con textos extraídos del «Quijote» y de obras de Lewis Carroll. En los capí­tulos iniciales se abordan asuntos previos recomen­dables para la buena comprensión de los capítulos de desarrollo de falacias específicas, a saber, la re­la­ción entre lógica y retórica, los distintos tipos de ar­gumentos, la relación entre razonar y argumentar, el lugar de las emociones en la argumentación falaz y las distintas teorías y definiciones de falacia, así como los errores conceptuales más comunes asociados con el término o el vínculo entre falacias y paradojas. Se re­servan dos capítulos finales, uno sobre falacias bioéticas contemporáneas, y otro con una propuesta de «Código de Buenas Prácticas Argumentativas», fun­damentado en los criterios a partir de los que se ela­bora la taxonomía de falacias del libro. La Organización de Naciones Unidas y la Organización de los Estados Americanos han desarrollado sistemas de indicadores de derechos humanos para monitorear el cumplimiento de los compromisos asumidos por los Estados a partir de la ratificación de los pactos y protocolos internacionales. Además de los clásicos indicadores cuantitativos, estos sistemas proponen incorporar “indicadores cualitativos” y “señales de progreso cualitativas”, aunque se observan diferencias en sus formas de construcción y conceptualización. El propósito de este trabajo fue desarrollar un análisis crítico de (...) las propuestas de inclusión de metodologías cualitativas en los sistemas de monitoreo de derechos humanos. Para ello, se llevó a cabo una revisión de los aspectos definitorios de la investigación y evaluación cualitativas, así como de los presupuestos ontológicos, epistemológicos y axiológicos que las vinculan al paradigma interpretativo comprensivo. A partir de ese recorrido, se argumentó que la elaboración de indicadores fijos, estandarizados y construidos a priori se presenta como un contrasentido desde una propuesta de investigación/evaluación cualitativa anclada en el paradigma interpretativo comprensivo. Por el contrario, se destacó la importancia de recuperar la perspectiva de las personas situadas, mediante abordajes inductivos que pongan en tensión los derechos reconocidos en los documentos internacionales con las realidades, percepciones y sentidos que emergen en los contextos socio-históricos concretos en que ellos se materializan. Se concluyó que este tipo de evaluación contribuiría a recuperar en los derechos humanos su potencial político emancipador, al resignificar el protagonismo de las personas como titulares de derechos y situarlas en el centro de los procesos de monitoreo. Ideal theory in social and political philosophy generally works to hide philosophical theories’ complicity in sustaining the structural violence and maintenance of white supremacy that are foundational to settler colonial societies. While non-ideal theory can provide a corrective to some of ideal theory’s intended omissions, it can also work to conceal the same systems of violence that ideal theory does, especially when framed primarily as a response to ideal theory. This article takes a decolonial approach to exploring the limitations of (...) non-ideal theory in its ability to respond to and redress the continuing harms done to Indigenous peoples by settler colonialism, including by outlining non-ideal theory’s relationship to a colonial politics of recognition. La biografía de Solana se ha reconstruido a partir de certificados y documentos originales, recopilando la bibliografía completa, que sobrepasa el centenar de obras. Partiendo de sus escritos se descubre su pensamiento filosófico, histórico, jurídico y teológico. Marcial Solana fue un polígrafo montañés ; Doctor en Filosofía y en Derecho, Alcalde de La Concha de Villaescusa, Diputado a Cortes por Santander, Académico correspondiente de la Real Academia de Ciencias Morales y Políticas, Caballero de la Orden de Malta, miembro (...) del CSIC y de la Sociedad Menéndez Pelayo, Presidente del Centro de Estudios Montañeses, Cronista del Real Valle de Villaescusa y ante todo, hispanista. Su obra más célebre es la "Historia de la Filosofía Española. Época del Renacimiento (Siglo XVI)", donde muestra la inmensa labor intelectual que realizaron los pensadores españoles de ese periodo. Las ideas fundamentales de este autor se pueden resumir así: Defiende con claridad la existencia de una Filosofía Española, que fueron los españoles del renacimiento los que elevaron esa filosofía a su nivel más alto, que estos filósofos cumplieron las condiciones necesarias para merecer ese título (buscaron la verdad, siguieron unos métodos rigurosos de trabajo, avanzaron en el conocimiento y aportaron originalidad en sus obras) Solana's biography has been reconstructed from original certificates and documents. The complete bibliography has been compiled, which exceeds one hundred works. Starting from his writings we have been able to discover his philosophical, historical, legal and theological thought. Marcial Solana was a polygraph, Doctor of Philosophy and Law, Mayor of La Concha de Villaescusa, Deputy to the Cortes for Santander, Corresponding Academician of the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, Knight of the Order of Malta, member of the CSIC and of the Menéndez Pelayo Society, President of the Center for Mountain Studies, Chronicler of the Real Valle de Villaescusa and, above all, and Hispanic. His most famous work is the "History of Spanish Philosophy. Renaissance period (16th century)", where it shows the immense intellectual work carried out by Spanish thinkers of that period. The fundamental ideas of this author can be summarized as follows: He clearly defends the existence of a Spanish Philosophy, that it was the Spaniards of the Renaissance who raised that philosophy to its highest level, that these philosophers fulfilled the necessary conditions to deserve that title ( they sought the truth, followed rígorous working methods, advanced knowledge and contributed origínality in their works). One way to track the many critical impacts of women of color feminisms is through the powerful structural analyses of gendered and racialized oppression they offer. This article discusses diverse lineages of women of color feminisms in the global South that tackle systemic structures of power and domination from their situated perspectives. It offers an introduction to structuralist theories in the humanities and differentiates them from women of color feminist theorizing, which begins analyses of structures from embodied and phenomenological st¬¬andpoints--with (...) the day-to-day concerns of our lives. The essay is divided into three sections. In section one, I discuss theories of structure in the humanities and sciences, differentiating them from women of color’s analysis of structure as diagnostic of the ways colonial power relations are functionalized through social structures. In section two, I discuss the diverse contexts of interpretation that background women of color feminisms, outlining key themes and ideas related to theories of structure. I argue against a unified theory of women of color structural feminisms that supplants difference, favoring a rehabilitated concept of structure for the purposes of making targeted interventions in contemporary radical anti-colonial politics. I offer the example of systematic marginalization produced by colonial violence and mythology as one reason to take up this approach. In section three, I outline four provisional characteristics of women of color structural feminisms. I conclude that, when divested from colonial myths that guide mainstream notions of structure, it can be a useful hermeneutic tactic in the fight for liberation from ongoing colonial violence. Gender-based forms of administrative violence, such as reproductive violence, are the result of systems designed to enact population-level harms through the production and forcible imposition of colonial systems of gender. Settler statecraft has long relied on the strategic promotion of sexual and reproductive violence. Patterns of reproductive violence adapt and change to align with the enduring goals and evolving needs of settler colonial occupation, dispossession, and containment. The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision to end the constitutional right to abortion in (...) Dobbs v Jackson is but one instance of this larger pattern. We analyze reproductive and obstetric violence and the structural trauma they produce through the lenses of i) historical continuity and ii) the global architectures of neoliberal settler capitalism in order to connect reproductive rights rollbacks in the U.S. with the expansion of reproductive violence across a world connected by colonial globalization. The subject of our article is the identification of cultural codes of Eastern European shtetl towns in the play by Grigory Gorin "Memorial Prayer", the libretto of which was written by the author based on the works of the famous Yiddish writer Sholom Aleichem. The author of the article describes the history and conditions of localization of Jewish culture in Eastern Europe and the Russian Empire, the peculiarities of its transformation, the tragic history of the Jewish theater in the first (...) third of the twentieth century. After the disappearance of the towns and the disuse of the Yiddish language, the preservation of the history of the characteristic everyday and philosophical way of life of the shtetls became the goal of museum figures, historians, writers, playwrights, and artists. In the work, using the example of Tevye the milkman, his family and environment, characteristic images of the inhabitants of small towns, their habitat, types of thinking and actions are revealed. The article uses the methods of historicism in the retrospective of the culture of Shtetl towns, the method of analysis in the identification of Shtetl archetypes, the method of synthesis in the generalization of a set of characteristic cultural codes. The main conclusions of the study are: 1. Eastern European Jewish shtetl towns are small urban-type settlements with a predominantly Jewish population, whose unique culture was determined by the Jewish faith, everyday and religious traditions, the Yiddish language, as well as the localization of residence in a small area. 2. During the period of large-scale social upheavals of the early twentieth century and the subsequent expansion beyond the boundaries of the towns, their unique culture became a mythologeme, the foundation for writers, artists, musicians, and theater figures who emerged from it. One of the milestones in the preservation of this culture was the Jewish theater GOSET, whose existence was tragically cut short in the middle of the twentieth century. 3. The play "Memorial Prayer", written by Grigory Gorin based on the works of Sholem Aleichem and staged at the Lenkom Theater by Mark Zakharov, became the quintessence of the characteristic images of the shtetl, and at the same time the revival of authentic Jewish culture. The author's special contribution is to highlight in the play the images-the archetypes of the Shtetl, which have become cultural markers, or codes of Jewish Yiddish culture. (shrink)

In recent years, supported by new scientific evidence, the conceptualization of cognitive reserve has been progressively enriched and now encompasses not only cognitive stimulating activities or educational level, but also lifestyle activities, such as leisure physical activity and socialization. In this context, there is increasing interest in understanding the role of psychological factors in brain health and cognitive functioning. In a previous study, we have found that these factors mediated the relationship between CR and self-reported cognitive functioning. In this study, (...) we have confirmed an association between two important constructs included in the psychological wellbeing and salutogenic models, “purpose in life” and “sense of coherence,” CR, as assessed using a questionnaire, and cognitive functioning, as evaluated using a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Results from 888 middle-aged healthy participants from the Barcelona Brain Health Initiative indicate that both sense of coherence and CR were positively associated with verbal memory, reasoning and attention, working memory, and global cognition. Moreover, the relation between CR and cognitive functioning in the different domains is partially mediated by SoC. When we controlled for brain integrity, introducing into the model neurofilament light chain measures, the mediator role of SoC was confirmed for reasoning and attention and global cognition. However, purpose in life was not associated with cognitive functioning. These results reveal the central role of the SoC construct, which mediates the association between classic CR estimates and cognitive functions, potentially representing a modifiable target for interventions that aim to promote brain health. Objective: Loneliness is the subjective distress of feeling alone and has a strong impact on wellbeing and health. In addition to well-known predictors like isolation and poor health, a better understanding of the psychological determinants of loneliness would offer effective targets for future complementary interventions.Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, we compared the explanatory power of several important risk factors of loneliness with the affective, motivational, and cognitive aspects of the Meaning in Life construct. Different nested linear models were compared (...) including socio-demographic, lifestyles, social-connectedness, and self-rated health variables, to assess the overlapping and non-overlapping explanatory power of each of them.Results: Health status and MiL were found to be the most important predictors of loneliness, followed by social connectedness and, with a much lower weight, lifestyles, and socio-demographic factors. Within the MiL factor, the most cognitive component, sense of coherence, had a greater explanatory power than the more affective and motivational ones.Conclusion: Reduced MiL, the capacity of an individual to attach “value and significance” to life, is a crucial predictor to the feeling of loneliness. These results suggest that programs aiming to combat loneliness should go well beyond situational interventions and include more cognitive, value-centered interventions that enable individuals to define and pursue a meaningful vital plan. The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has had the opportunity to address the sensitive matter of the wearing of the Islamic headscarf in the workplace in two preliminary rulings. The result of these decisions implies that the wearing of this veil at work is, in general, neither proscribed nor always justified as a legitimate expression of religious beliefs. However, the law studied and applied deals exclusively with discrimination in the workplace on religious grounds. Nonetheless, the Islamic headscarf (...) is only worn by (some) Muslim women (never by men). This article reviews the EU legislation and policy on equality, intersectionality and multiple discrimination to verify that gender mainstreaming does not reach the work of the Court. Only the inclusion of a feminist perspective to the application of justice, with a clear methodology, can guarantee that gender does not disappear in cases of complex discrimination. (shrink)

The medical drama and its central character, the doctor-hero have been a mainstay of popular television. House M.D. offers a new (and problematic) iteration of the doctor-hero. House eschews the generic conventions of the “television doctor” by being neither the idealized television doctor of the past, nor the more recent competent but often fallible physicians in entertainment texts. Instead, his character is a fragmented text which privileges the biomedical over the personal or emotional with the ultimate goal of scientifically uncovering (...) and resolving instances of disease. This article examines the implicit and explicit messages in House M.D. and critically analyzes both the show and its lead character in relation to the traditional medical drama genre that highlights the “doctor-hero” as the central character. While at first House seems to completely violate narrative and generic norms, ultimately the program provides a new form that reinforces the presence of the doctor-hero, but highlights House’s character as the central figure who is personally and interpersonally problematic but biomedically effective. The paper is about the connection between logic and discrimination, with special focus on Plumwood’s ideas in her groundbreaking article ‘The Politics of Reason. Towards a Feminist Logic’ (1993). Although Plumwood’s paper is not focused on the notion of discrimination, what she writes is useful for illuminating some basic mechanisms of thought that are at the basis of discriminatory practices. After an introductory section about the concepts of logic and discrimination and their possible interconnections, I present Plumwood’s ideas in 1993 (...) with a special focus on their relevance for understanding the nature of discrimination. More specifically, I use examples of discriminatory practices that make the connection between logical operations and oppression envisaged by Plumwood clear. I focus especially on two questions: Can logic produce discrimination? Can logic contribute to the fight against discrimination? If so, how? (shrink)

This paper investigates Negative Concord, arguing that it results from a systematic lexical ambiguity: the items that participate in Negative Concord ("n-words" in Laka's 1990 terminology) are ambiguous between negative polarity items and their genuinely negative counterparts. I try to show that on empirical grounds the proposed account compares favorably with other analyses that shy away from ambiguity. I furthermore suggest that the ambiguity is not implausible conceptually because it can be viewed as reflecting an intermediate stage of the Jespersen (...) Cycle. Negative Concord can be observed in many languages. The data discussed here are taken from Romance, primarily Spanish. (shrink)

Bare conditionals, I argue, exhibit Conditional Duality in that when they appear in downward entailing environments they differ from bare conditionals elsewhere in having existential rather than universal force. Two recalcitrant phenomena are shown to find a new explanation under this thesis: bare conditionals under only, and bare conditionals in the scope of negative nominal quantifiers, or what has come to be known as Higginbotham’s puzzle. I also consider how bare conditionals behave when embedded under negation, arguing that such conditionals (...) often involve denial negation. One important conclusion that emerges from the discussion is that an account of bare conditionals that validates Conditional Excluded Middle is not warranted. By limiting the scope of the strict analysis Conditional Duality is also a way of maintaining such an account. (shrink)

Das Verstehen legt Wittgenstein einem Ich bei: Einer versteht, indem er Zeichen anwendet. Anwendbare Zeichen sind Symbole: Sie werden bedeutsam, wenn sie in Zusammenhang mit anderen Zeichen gebracht werden und eine Funktion in der kognitiven oder praktischen Aneignung der Welt erfüllen. Symbole gehören zu Symbolsystemen und können als Vorschriften für symbolische, d.h. semiotische und insbesondere logische, Operationen mit Zeichen aufgefasst werden. Die Veränderung der Wittgensteinschen Auffassung des Verstehens besteht vor allem im Anerkennen der Erfahrung der Sozialisation als einer der wichtigsten (...) What is the nature of time? This new study engages with the philosophy of Henri Bergson on time and proposes a new way of thinking about the effects of future events on the past. According to Bergson, time is an integral feature of real things, just as much as their material or size. When a flower grows, it takes a period of real time for it to flourish, which cannot be quickened or slowed down, nor can it be eliminated from (...) the process of growth. Bergson named this real time 'duration' and argued that everything and everyone exist as duration, and that internal processes flow into one another, with no clear boundaries that separate one phase of duration from another. According to Bergson's philosophy, the past does not disappear but smoothly flows into the present, forming an indivisible dynamic unity. But what if the causal flow of temporal reality is not unidirectional? What if not only past events influence future ones, but future ones in their turn have retrospective effect on past occurrences? The author of this book analyses these key questions, asserts that the changeability of the past follows from Bergson's theory of time and proposes a theory of embodied time that involves the retrospective enrichment of reality. It has been a long-standing puzzle that Negative Polarity Items appear to split into two subvarieties when their effect on the interpretation of questions is taken into account: while questions with any and ever can be used as unbiased requests of information, questions with so-called `minimizers', i.e. idioms like lift a finger and the faintest idea, are always biased towards a negative answer (cf. Ladusaw 1979). Focusing on yes/no questions, this paper presents a solution to this puzzle. Specifically it is (...) shown that in virtue of containing even (cf. Heim 1984), minimizers, unlike any, trigger a presupposition, which reduces the set of the possible answers to a question to the singleton containing the negative answer. (shrink)
