We have recently witnessed an explosion in the theme of virtues. It is not by chance that in most parts of the world research centers, projects, associations, and foundations on virtues have been founded. But what is behind this phenomenon? The recovery of virtue ethics was initiated by Elizabeth Anscombe, re-launched by Alasdair MacIntyre, and has now been developed by many authors in a contemporary context. Virtue ethics has now become its own distinct subject matter, according to some it is (...) named appropriately, and according to others not. Speaking of virtue is thus a reflection of the historical period we are going through: to be virtuous is “cool”, a part of one’s identity and character. In this light, being virtuous founds its refection in narcissism. Paradoxically becoming virtuous does not involve a progress toward human flourishing, but rather it becomes about fulfilling a realisation which is already in place in the person without any effort, sacrifice, or work. Perhaps a philosophy of humility can recover a horizon of action in which humanity tends towards its flourishing, and thus to a recovery of virtue that must increasingly be as silent as exercised? In this study, I have focussed on the importance of Wittgenstein in the thought of Elizabeth Anscombe. Although Anscombe detached herself from her master’s approach, her encounter with him was extremely important in her own work. In particular, I will take into consideration common points and discrepancies between the two philosophers. I will also recall Anscombe’s An Introduction to Wittgenstein’s Tractatus (first published in 1959) on its anniversary.

IT_Nel panorama analitico emerge la gura di Gertrude Elizabeth Margaret Anscombe. Ella, accanto a suo marito Peter Geach e al losofo Anthony Kenny, è stata indicata da John Haldane, tra i promotori di una nuova corrente denominata “tomismo analitico”. In questo saggio, oltre a sottolineare le debolezze che sono presenti in tale dicitura e allo stesso tempo il carattere innovativo della ri essione di questi loso , si è scelto di ripercorrere in modo critico le pagine che Anscombe dedica ad (...) un tema caro ai loso sin dalla classicità, vale a dire il tema della “sostanza”. È possibile, così, mostrare come tale concetto abbia subito delle modi che lungo tutta la storia del pensiero e, in ne, chiarire la de nizione che ne dà Anscombe. In conclusione, vengono presi in considerazioni quelli che possono essere con- siderati, sia in positivo che in negativo, i punti rilevanti della questione. EN_In the analytic philosophical panorama it is very relevant the gure of Gertrude Elizabeth Margaret Anscombe. Along her husband Peter Geach and the philosopher Anthony Kenny, she was identi ed by John Haldane as one of the promoters of a new philosophical current called “Analytical Thomism”. In this paper, in addition to highlighting the weaknesses that is present in this statement and at the same time the character of innovation o ered by the re ection of these philosophers, the Author choses to analyze the topic of substance, considered by philosophers since the classical antiquity. She will show brie y how this con- cept has been changed in the history of thought, culminating in the elaboration developed by Anscombe. In this paper I present a study about the notion of Analytical Thomism. I therefore propose a brief summary on the history of Thomism. Then I point out the resumption of the thought of Thomas that occurred in England at the end of the twentieth century by many authors, the first among them being Gertrude Elizabeth Margaret Anscombe, Peter Geach and Anthony Kenny. These authors operated within the analytical horizon and began to take an interest in Thomas. In light of (...) this historical path, one can see how tradition and innovation are closely intertwined. I therefore propose an argument on the notion of Analytical Thomism, in light of the outlined historical process and the research now discussed. (shrink)

In this paper I will analyse the conception of human rights, considering, in particular, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). Human rights, following the common-sense approach, are of course a sacred element for each individual and a necessary premise for an ethics that points to human flourishing. Here, the concept of human rights concerning the subject’s beliefs and the context in which the subject acts will be analysed. At the centre of this paper, there will be an analysis of (...) the universality of human rights. In particular, I will take in consideration the position of J. Maritain, who found in praxis – and who was aware of the horrible totalitarianisms of the twentieth century – the common ground for a definition of human rights. I will also consider, therefore, the objections addressed to the definition of human rights, and the Cairo Declaration, which stands in evident contrast with the 1948 Declaration. Furthermore, I will focus on different backgrounds of the declarations and their attempt at universality. The government of a society is responsible for the co-existence of its citizens and for the respect and protection of each individual. In this sense, civil ethics has to be based on human dignity and human rights. (shrink)

Europa, cristianità, istruzione, educazione, società secolare, tempi moderni. Questi e molti altri ancora i temi che Rémi Brague affronta tin questo volume. Il continuo processo di individualizzazione, caratterizzato dal razionalismo, ha comportato un totale indebolimento dei legami societari e ha posto al centro le libertà e i diritti dei singoli. Si assiste così all’evoluzione di una società secolarizzata che giunta al suo capolinea non riesce più a bastare a se stessa. Il pensiero moderno non sembra essere in grado di giustificare (...) il fatto che esistono degli uomini sulla terra, cercando di costruire unicamente sul proprio terreno senza considerare ciò che trascende l’umano, Natura o Dio. “Il progetto dei Tempi moderni è fallito. L’ateismo è incapace di rispondere alla questione della legittimità dell’uomo”. Brague insiste nel mettere in rilievo il carattere missionario del cristianesimo: questo – scrive – non è riservato esclusivamente agli europei. Si chiede quindi Brague se la nostra società abbia ancora il desiderio di vivere e di agire e auspica che tale desiderio sia destato, attingendo alla sorgente della vita. Contro il cristianismo e l’umanismo si presenta come una originale riflessione sulla società di oggi, attenta a non nascondere l’aspirazione propria di ciascun individuo, per cui è legittimo parlare di ciò che veramente è ‘umano’ e di una dimensione spirituale che caratterizza ciascuna cultura. The present Festschrift was born as a tribute to the scientific production of Rémi Brague. This study collects the interventions of several thinkers, with different scientific profiles, who, fond of reality, have reflected on, and been in dialogue with his thought. Brague has explored many spheres: anthropology, metaphysics, religion, history of religions, aesthetics, ethics, politics, and cosmology – where he recalled those anchors in the sky where mankind throws its roots. We have decided to entitle this collection Europa cura te (...) ipsam! inspired by on the admonition of the famous Medice cura te ipsum. The paper proposes a reflection on the meaning of “Christian ex- perience”, “encounter with God”, and the role of the philosophy of religion within humanistic disciplines. The essay starts with an anal- ysis of the notion of “experience” and through the studies of Romano Guardini, Joseph Ratzinger, Hans Urs von Balthasar and Dietrich von Hildebrand proposes a different perspective of a philosophy of religion, taking into account on one hand of the development of the sciences and on the other of (...) the philosophical-analytical method. In this sense this short research wants to be a sort of alarm bell to that theoreticism and abstractionism capable of rendering the philosophy of religion a sterile discipline, which is instead fruitful by definition. La grande domanda che inevitabilmente solleva l’opera Ethics di Dietrich von Hildebrand, allievo di Edmund Husserl e tra i fondatori della fenomenologia realista, è se sia necessario un fondamento della morale. Un testo curioso, uscito originariamente con il titolo Christian Ethics per la David McKay nel 1953. Un’edizione fortunata che vide diverse ristampe sino a quella della Franciscan Herald Press ribattezzata, per volere dell’autore, con il titolo Ethics. Il presente volume offre un’analisi dettagliata dell’opera, ripercorrendone i temi principali: valore, libertà, (...) relativismo, virtù. L’origine della storia dell’Europa merita di essere ripercorsa. Troppo spesso infatti si tralascia il fatto che la cultura europea è secondaria ad Atene e Gerusalemme. Nel presentare lo scenario attuale si ragiona spesso sul collante monetario che tiene uniti gli stati, sulla buona morale che li accomuna aperta alla convivenza con l’estraneo, tuttavia non si considera mai il fatto che l’ethos ha ragioni storiche. Si parla di diritti, si erige l’eguaglianza a principio sovrano, trascurando che la Dichiarazione Universale che tutela (...) tali diritti non è stata accettata da una parte significativa di mondo. E ancora si parla spesso di bilancio demografico nazionale e integrazione, ignari dell’ipotesi recentemente avanzata di un’Europa balcanizzata. E infine si trascura che l’ethos di un popolo trova il suo inizio in una credenza e dunque in una tradizione. In questo breve saggio tenterò di tratteggiare brevemente l’odierno quadro europeo, mettendo in evidenza i legami forti, imprescindibili, sui quali poggia l’etica di una civiltà, e con essa i diritti che la società tutela e promuove. Tenterò altresì di porre in evidenza la trasformazione in atto a livello sociale circa l’etica occidentale consentita, il suo “legittimo” allargamento, e sul perché si ritenga corretto promuoverla. L’opera più importante per la filosofia dell’azione dopo l’Etica di Aristotele: così Donald Davidson ha definito il libro di Gertrude Elizabeth Margaret Anscombe, Intention, che Elisa Grimi ci presenta oggi attraverso questa preziosa guida alla lettura, il primo testo di questo genere in lingua italiana. dalla Prefazione di Cyrille Michon. Che cosa sia un’intenzione, quale sia il ruolo che essa svolge all'interno di un’azione, se vi si possa trovare traccia della vera intenzione del soggetto guardando l’azione che compie: questi e (...) molti altri sono gli interrogativi ai quali Anscombe tenta di rispondere. Intention non è un’opera di etica o di politica ma si muove su uno sfondo etico o politico, uno sfondo da cui lo scritto trae la propria forza e il proprio spirito. L’intenzione infatti è capace di modellare l’azione e generare una storia. Come un mazzo di fiori scelto ad hoc è capace di suscitare emozioni e sentimenti e, allo stesso tempo, custodire la promessa di una storia a venire. (shrink)

Questo studio costituisce la prima monografia italiana su una delle più complesse pensatrici dell’ultimo millennio. Filosofa dal pensiero formidabile, così ne parlò Sarah Boxer sul New York Times, Gertrude Elizabeth Margaret Anscombe, moglie di Peter Geach e madre di sette figli, ha sempre battagliato per la verità. In lei vita, passione e filosofia sono un tutt’uno e in tale unità si cela l’irriducibilità e il fascino del suo pensiero. In compagnia dei classici dell’antichità, dei moderni e di quei filosofi del (...) panorama contemporaneo con cui era solita dialogare, in primis Ludwig Wittgenstein, ella arrivò a elaborare un pensiero del tutto personale quale risposta ai diversi problemi sollevati in ambito sociale. Non a caso, come osserva Jane O’Grady, talvolta venne soprannominata la Dragon Lady di Oxford. Basti citare la sua opposizione pubblica al conferimento della laurea honoris causa al presidente Truman, o alle sfide che fronteggiò in campo morale. Autrice di numerosissime pubblicazioni, nel 1958 stilò il famoso scritto Modern Moral Philosophy, poi divenuto il manifesto della rinascita di un’etica di tipo neo-aristotelico. Il volume si conclude con una breve raccolta di testimonianze di persone, docenti, allievi e amici che hanno avuto occasione di incontrarla. E come ricorda Rosalind Hursthouse, Anscombe era una “filosofa straordinaria, e del tutto eccezionale”. (shrink)

In this essay we will try to highlight the interweaving of language and morality and also the principle of legitimacy that derives from it. In her famous essay Modern Moral Philosophy (written in 1958 and which later became the modern manifesto of a neo-Aristotelian type of ethics), Elizabeth Anscombe highlights the need for a philosophy of psychology as well as the abandonment of a specific language in moral philosophy. Taking a position against the consequentialist conception of morality, she implicitly stands (...) opposed to the principle that conse- quences define legitimacy; it is precisely when the binomial language-morality fails that the principle of legitimacy loses its substance; a political authority can lose its moral legitimacy if she/he betrays the common good. Starting from a specific language adopted, a morality is derived from it. In fact, depending on what is considered to be a good or an evil, a specific moral action follows. In this perspective, responsibility and awareness of which goods need to be shared in common play a central role, and an ontological foundation is discovered. (shrink)

The 1948 Declaration of Human Rights demanded a collaboration among exponents from around the world. Embodying many different cultural perspectives, it was driven by a like-minded belief in the importance of finding common principles that would be essential for the very survival of civilization. Although an arduous and extensive process, the result was a much sought-after and collective endeavor that would be referenced for decades to come. Motivated by the seventieth anniversary of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and (...) enriched by the contributions of eminent scholars, this volume aims to be a reflection on human rights and their universality. The underlying question is whether or not, after seventy years, this document can be considered universal, or better yet, how to define the concept of “universality.” We live in an age in which this notion seems to be guided not so much by the values that the subject intrinsically perceives as good, but rather by the demands of the subject. Universality is thus no longer deduced by something that is objectively given, within the shared praxis. Conversely, what seems to have to be universal is what we want to be valid for everyone. This paper, written in honor of the “800 years from the birth of Bonaventure”, underlines the affinity of the philosophy and the theology of Bonaventure, General Ministry of the Franciscan Order, with the perspective of Dietrich von Hildebrand, father of the realist phaenomenology. It is delineated a curious correlation between the two authors that have been able to generate a real revolution of love. The epistemic structure and the ontology of Bonaventure are caracterized by a structural unity that through an (...) itinerarium lead to the visio Dei. On the other hand von Hildebrand in What is philoso­phy? construes a strong epistemology in which the “evidence” and the “experience” of external realities play a fundamental role in reaching the perfect knowledge. A return to God is encouraged by two philosophers through the search and the veri cation of the phamenological facts that constitute and characterize the human being. (shrink)

Romano Guardini, filosofo e teologo, anticipa l’intero dibattito sulla postmoderni. Egli delinea i confini della modernità e pone in evidenza lo smarrimento dell’uomo dinnanzi al riaprirsi della domanda sull’origine dell’esistenza. Non è la logica stessa della modernità – si domanda Guardini – a metter capo ad un inaspettato ritorno del caos, interno ed esterno? «L’uomo sta nuovamente di fronte al caos…».Questo lavoro, in un armonico insieme di studiosi dalle differenti prospettive, propone una riflessione del Guardini critico della modernità e della (...) trasformazione del concetto di “religiosità” che si è avuta durante la post-modernità. In questo lavoro analizzerò la concezione dei diritti umani a partire dalla Dichiarazione Universale dei Diritti Umani (1948). I diritti umani, seguendo l’approccio del buon senso, sono naturalmente un elemento sacro per ogni individuo e una premessa necessaria per un’etica che punta alla completa realizzazione del soggetto. Analizzerò il concetto di diritto umano, di universalità, in riferimento alle credenze del soggetto e al contesto in cui il soggetto agisce. In particolare, prenderò in considerazione la posizione di J. Maritain, che ha (...) trovato nella “prassi” il terreno comune per una definizione dei diritti umani. Prenderò in considerazione anche le critiche alla definizione del concetto di diritto umano e la Dichiarazione del Cairo, che si pone in evidente contrasto con la Dichiarazione del 1948. Infine, mi concentrerò sui diversi contesti delle dichiarazioni e sul tentativo della loro universalità. Il governo di una società è responsabile della convivenza dei cittadini e del rispetto e della protezione di ogni individuo. In questo senso l’etica di una società deve basarsi sulla dignità umana e sui diritti umani. (shrink)

Questo studio costituisce una breve riflessione a partire dall'analisi proposta da Guardini in La fine dell'epoca moderna circa la triade natura – soggetto/personalità – cultura. Guardini ripercorre la crisi della modernità rintracciando i punti critici di un'antropologia che sembra talvolta scricchiolare. Parla così di uomo-non- umano, di natura-non-naturale e di cultura-non-culturale (seppur su quest'ultima categoria affermi che la ricerca è ancora in corso). Oggi si può bene osservare ciò che Guardini aveva già sessant'anni fa previsto, e cioè il declino e (...) la trasformazione culturale e sociale, azzardando una definizione più compiuta di ciò che egli aveva sommessamente espresso – poiché non ancora attualizzato – con “non-culturale”. Lontano da una pura analisi linguistica, si osserveranno le implicazioni sociali di tale “rivoluzione” antropologica in riferimento al concetto di “umano”. (shrink)

The rise of the phenomenon of virtue ethics in recent years has increased at a rapid pace. Such an explosion carries with it a number of great possibilities, as well as risks. This volume has been written to contribute a multi-faceted perspective to the current conversation about virtue. Among many other thought-provoking questions, the collection addresses the following: What are the virtues, and how are they enumerated? What are the internal problems among ethicists, and what are the objections and replies (...) to contemporary virtue ethics? Additionally, the practical implications following from the answers to these questions are discussed in new and fascinating research. Fundamental concepts such as teleology and eudaimonism are addressed from both a historical and dialectical approach. This tome will contribute not only to providing further clarity to the current horizons in virtue ethics, but also to the practical conclusion following from the study: to challenge the reader toward a greater pursuit of the virtuous life. The present paper proposes to analyse the role of the practical syllogism in G.E.M. Anscombe’s theory of action. To this end, I have rst of all chosen to examine, even if in broad terms, the conception of practical syllogism as it is present in the Aristotelian doctrine, and to reveal/delineate some critical points found within it. The following section is the central part of the paper, where, starting from § 33 of Intention, a re ection is carried out on the (...) practical syllogism, which is among Aristotle’s most signi cant discoveries, chie y bringing into focus its teleological prospective. Action, in Anscombe’s thought, almost seems be the cornerstone of a profound, and in a certain sense “contextual”, comprehension of the subject. (shrink)

EN_This paper‘s goal is to investigate secularized society by retracing its structure. What is hidden behind the notion of secularization? Our intention here is to analyse the social phenomenon of secularisation through the study of its ontology. The research will be on the identity issue, in the first place the living identity to see its resonance in social, cultural, religious and political areas. We will then arrive at the end of this paper, at the thesis – starting from the consciousness (...) of self and the world – of a return to the authentic form of living together in reciprocal welcome as reason of personal enrichment. In such dynamics the forgiveness issue – taking into account Occidental history – will have a central, and, at the same time, redeeming role. FR_Cette étude se propose d’étudier la société sécularisée, en retraçant sa structure. Qu’est-ce qui se cache derrière la notion de sécularisation? Ici nous entendons analyser le phénomène de la sécularisation sociale par l’intermédiaire de l’étude de son ontologie. La recherche portera sur la question de l’identité, en premier lieu sur l’identité vivante, pour voir ses résonances dans les domaines social, culturel, religieux et politique. Ainsi, nous arriverons à la thèse - à partir de la conscience du soi et du monde - pour un retour à une forme authentique du vivre ensemble dans un accueil réciproque en tant que raison d’enrichissement personnel. Dans cette dynamique la question du pardon – en tenant compte de l’histoire Occidental – aura un rôle centrale, et, en même temps, rédempteur. IT_Il presente saggio si propone di investigare il tema della società secolarizzata ripercorrendone la struttura. Attorno alla nozione di secolarizzazione che cosa si nasconde? Si intende qui analizzare il fenomeno sociale della secolarizzazione studiandone l'ontologia. La riflessione muoverà perciò attorno al tema dell'identità, in prima istanza l'identità vivente per vederne quindi i riflessi in ambito sociale, culturale, religioso e politico. Si giungerà, a percorso della trattazione concluso, all'ipotesi – a partire della coscienza di sé e dunque del mondo – di un ritorno alla forma autentica del vivere insieme in un'accoglienza reciproca quale motivo di arricchimento personale. In tale dinamica la figura del perdono – stante la storia dell'Occidente – avrà il suo ruolo centrale nonché salvifico. (shrink)

Ad aprire questo volume è l’eccezionale testo Über Leib und Seele di Max Scheler sinora rimasto inedito. Seguono le interviste a Roger Scruton e Pierangelo Sequeri. Nella storia dell’Occidente il concetto di anima ha radici profonde. Esso sembra essere in uso principalmente in un contesto cristiano, la sua origine però è contemporaneo l’anima ha però subito una trasformazione, per cui pare lecito parlarne in contesti religiosi mentre sembra sempre più opportuno trattare di mente o cervello in altri ambiti. Questo volume, (...) attraverso una corale di contributi, vuole offrire uno studio sul tema dell’anima, mettendo in evidenza la trasformazione che nella storia della cultura tale concetto ha subito. Sono qui inclusi gli studi di Gianfranco Basti, Christopher Hughes, Joseph Karbowski, Andrea Lavazza, Antonio Petagine, Vittorio Possenti, Josef M. Seifert.
