'Theory of mind' in animals: ways to make progress.Elske Vaart & Charlotte K. Hemelrijk - 2012 - Synthese (3):1-20.
Whether any non-human animal can attribute mental states to others remains the subject of extensive debate. This despite the fact that several species have behaved as if they have a ‘theory of mind’ in various behavioral tasks. In this paper, we review the reasons of skeptics for their doubts: That existing experimental setups cannot distinguish between ‘mind readers’ and ‘behavior readers’, that results that seem to indicate ‘theory of mind’ may come from studies that are insufficiently controlled, and that our (...)

    Empathy and propositional knowledge.Elske Straver - 2007 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 14 (11):43-60.
Empathy is often described as an evolutionary tool that helps humans manoeuvre between the complexities of our social hierarchy. As it allows us to understand other people's intentions, it is often categorized as an element of social cognition that can lead to a form of know-how. This paper will argue that empathy can lead to more than know-how. Using data from psychology and neuroscience, I will sketch empathizing as a reliable process. On the assumption of reliabilism, I will show that (...)

This note is viewing survival data of a natural cohort as being generated by a possibly nonlinear, nonhomogeneous death process. It proves that the usual conditional distributions of the number of survivors at a certain age are binomial if and only if the death process is linear. Thus the customary statistical methods for the analysis of life table data are, strictly speaking, invalid whenever the underlying death process is nonlinear. For example, if a contagious disease is the cause of some (...)

What happened to participatory research at the International Potato Center?Graham Thiele, Elske Fliert & Dindo Campilan - 2001 - Agriculture and Human Values 18 (4):429-446.
During the 1980s, when a flexibleapproach to research, known asfarmer-back-to-farmer, was developed, theInternational Potato Center (CIP) became famousfor participatory research. Subsequently itappeared to have lost leadership in this field. This article documents participatory researchactivities in CIP over the past thirty years tofind out what happened. Even in the 1980s,implementation of participatory research wasactually limited. Participatory research in thecenter grew unevenly, with little clearencouragement from the CGIAR. Decentralizationof social scientists in the 1990s led to thefragmentation of participatory research and, inthe absence of (...)

Biases in attention and interpretation in adolescents with varying levels of anxiety and depression.Anke M. Klein, Leone de Voogd, Reinout W. Wiers & Elske Salemink - 2017 - Cognition and Emotion 32 (7):1478-1486.
ABSTRACTThis is the first study to investigate multiple cognitive biases in adolescence simultaneously, to examine whether anxiety and depression are associated with biases in attention and interpretation, and whether these biases are able to predict unique variance in self-reported levels of anxiety and depression. A total of 681 adolescents performed a Dot Probe Task, an Emotional Visual Search Task, and an Interpretation Recognition Task. Attention and interpretation biases were significantly correlated with anxiety. Mixed results were reported with regard to depression: (...)

    The autocatalytic growth model.H. R. van der Vaart - 1968 - Acta Biotheoretica 18 (1-4):133-142.
Because of the important role which the ‘autocatalytic’ or ‘logistic’ equation has played in determining the direction of a good deal of research both in demography and in the study of individual growth phenomena, a critical and comparative evaluation of those leading ideas inRobertson's book which pertain to this equation and of some of the criticisms levelled against it seemed to be of interest. The present paper shows that, contrary to common belief,Robertson did not really assume that the autocatalytic reactions (...)

Conceptualizing integrative, farmer participatory research for sustainable agriculture: From opportunities to impact. [REVIEW]Elske van de Fliert & Ann R. Braun - 2002 - Agriculture and Human Values 19 (1):25-38.
This paper offers a conceptualmodel for participatory research projects thataim to improve the sustainability ofagriculture and natural resource management. The purpose of the model is to provide asystematic framework that can guide the designof participatory research projects, theiranalysis, and the documentation of results. Inthe model, conceptual boundaries are drawnbetween research and development, developmentand extension and between extension andimplementation. Objectives, activities, andactors associated with each of these realmsneed to be carefully selected, monitored, andevaluated throughout the course of a projectusing well-designed indicators. Extending Social Sustainability to Suppliers: The Role of GVC Governance Strategies and Supplier Country Institutions.Sarah Castaldi, Miriam M. Wilhelm, Sjoerd Beugelsdijk & Taco van der Vaart - 2022 - Journal of Business Ethics 183 (1):123-146.
The disaggregation and geographic dispersion of global value chains (GVCs) have expanded the responsibility of international buyers from firm-level corporate social responsibility (CSR) towards social sustainability of their emerging country suppliers. We theorize, in this paper, that the effectiveness of lead firms’ GVC governance strategies for social sustainability—which can be audit-based or cooperation-based—depends on the local institutional context of the supplier. Supplier country institutions exert legal and civil society pressures for social sustainability, which shape suppliers’ attitude and receptiveness towards lead (...)

The study of granulocyte kinetics by mathematical analysis of DNA labelling.William M. O'Fallon, Richard I. Walker & H. Robert Van Der Vaart - 1971 - Acta Biotheoretica 20 (3-4):95-124.
A commonly used experimental procedure for the study of granulocyte kinetics involves the labelling and subsequent tracing of granulocyte DNA. Following the introduction of a label into the system, observations are made periodically on the concentration of label in the DNA of granulocytes taken from the circulating blood. A mathematical model for the expected value of this concentration has been derived, studied, and related to experimental observations from studies using P32 as a label. Insofar as the derivation of the model (...)

Transforming extension for sustainable agriculture: The case of integrated pest management in rice in Indonesia. [REVIEW]Niels Röling & Elske van de Fliert - 1994 - Agriculture and Human Values 11 (2-3):96-108.
Investment in agricultural extension, as well as its design and practice, are usually based on the assumption that agricultural science generates technology (“applied science“), which extension experts transfer to “users“. This model negates local knowledge and creativity, ignores farmers' self-confidence and social energy as important sources of change, and, in its most linear expression, does not pay attention to information from and about farmers as a condition for anticipating utilization. In practice, farmers rely on knowledge developed by farmers, reinvent ideas brought (...)

With technological possibilities in healthcare steadily increasing, more tools for digital cognitive rehabilitation become available. Acceptance of such technological advances is crucial for successful implementation. Therefore, we examined technology acceptance specifically for this form of rehabilitation in a sample of healthcare providers involved in cognitive rehabilitation. An adjusted version of the Technology Acceptance Model questionnaire was used, including the subscales for perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, subjective norm, and intention to use, which all contribute to actual use of a (...)

Vuurduin: aantekeningen bij een wereld die verdwijnt.Eva Meijer - 2021 - [Rotterdam]: MVDF.
Alles verdwijnt natuurlijk: familie, geliefden, (...)
