The recently published ‘Scientific Review’ by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport about transwomen’s participation in female sport doesn’t deserve its name; it is wholly unscientific. This publication follows a familiar pattern. The body is not important anymore when it comes to categorisation and eligibility in sport; instead, it’s all about a psychological phenomenon: gender identity. This side-lining of the body (which makes the side-lining of female athletes and the inclusion of male-born athletes possible) is now reinforced by an (...)

    L’être du « nous » chez Simon Frank : ontologie et philosophie sociale.Emma Guillet - 2019 - Cahiers de Philosophie de L’Université de Caen 56 (56):103-116.
In his attempt to reorganize the ontological foundations of knowledge as present in his social philosophy, Semyon Frank (1877-1950) assigned a central role to the idea of unity in the plurality expressed by the pronoun “we”. How did this spiritual reality, in itself unconceivable, allow Frank to describe at the same time, in the psychic field, the emergence of the subject, in the social field, the internal dynamics of any human community and, in the ideological field, the danger that he (...)

Los diferentes sentidos del Otro en Descartes.Pierre Guenancia & Emma Rodríguez Camacho - 2019 - Ideas Y Valores 68 (170):249-267.
ABSTRACT The article examines consolation as a philosophical issue insofar as it is a materialization of attentiveness, and explains the resources it offers (...)

The power of norms to sway fused group members.Winnifred R. Louis, Craig McGarty, Emma F. Thomas, Catherine E. Amiot & Fathali M. Moghaddam - 2018 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 41:e209.
Whitehouse adapts insights from evolutionary anthropology to interpret extreme self-sacrifice through the concept of identity fusion. The model neglects the role of normative systems in shaping behaviors, especially in relation to violent extremism. In peaceful groups, increasing fusion will actually decrease extremism. Groups collectively appraise threats and opportunities, actively debate action options, and rarely choose violence toward self or others.

Targeting a novel apoptotic pathway in human disease.Francesca D'Addio, Laura Montefusco, Maria Elena Lunati, Ida Pastore, Emma Assi, Adriana Petrazzuolo, Virna Marin, Chiara Bruckmann & Paolo Fiorina - 2023 - Bioessays 45 (6):2200231.
Apoptotic pathways have always been regarded as a key‐player in preserving tissue and organ homeostasis. Excessive activation or resistance to activation of cell death signaling may indeed be responsible for several mechanisms of disease, including malignancy and chronic degenerative diseases. Therefore, targeting apoptotic factors gained more and more attention in the scientific community and novel strategies emerged aimed at selectively blocking or stimulating cell death signaling. This is also the case for the TMEM219 death receptor, which is activated by a (...)

Griffith, Michelle G. Craske, Allison Waters & Maria Nazarian - 2010 - Cognition and Emotion 24 (1):48-62.
This study examined within-person co-occurrence of self-focus, negative affect, and stress in a community sample of adolescents with or without emotional disorders. As part of a larger study, 278 adolescents were interviewed about emotional disorders. Later, they completed diary measures over three days, six times a day, reporting their current thoughts, affect, and levels of stress. Negative affect was independently related to both concurrent stress and self-focus. Importantly, the association between negative affect and self-focus was stronger among participants with a (...)

« Nous savons que nous voulons nous retrouver. Tout ce dont nous avons besoin, c’est des cérémonies qui nous rassembleront » écrit la poétesse afro-féministe Alexis Pauline Gumbs. Les noms que nous utilisons pour nous dire font parfois office de cérémonies : un nom nous appelle, et nous répondons à son invocation. Ce peut être un cri de ralliement « Not GAY as in Happy but QUEER as in Fuck You!

Expertise in Evaluating Choreographic Creativity: An Online Variation of the Consensual Assessment Technique.Lucie Clements, Emma Redding, Naomi Lefebvre Sell & Jon May - 2018 - Frontiers in Psychology 9:391312.
In contemporary dance, experts evaluate creativity in competitions, auditions, and performances, typically through ratings of choreography or improvisation. Audiences also implicitly evaluate choreographic creativity, so dancers’ livelihoods also hinge upon the opinions of non-expert observers. However, some argue that the abstract and often pedestrian nature of contemporary dance confuses non-expert audiences. Therefore, agreement regarding creativity and appreciation amongst experts and non-experts may be low. Finding appropriate methodologies for reliable and real-world creativity evaluation remains the subject of considerable debate within the (...)

Stress and mental ill-health carry considerable costs for both individuals and organizations. Although interventions targeting compassion and self-compassion have been shown to reduce stress and benefit mental health, related research in organizational settings is limited. We investigated the effects of a 6-week psychological intervention utilizing compassion training on stress, mental health, and self-compassion. Forty-nine employees of two organizations were randomly assigned to either the intervention or a physical exercise control condition. Multilevel growth models showed that stress and mental ill-health decreased (...)

Consumer demand for health information and health services has rapidly evolved to capture and even propel the movement to online health information seeking. Seventeen percent of health information internet users will look for information about memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. We examined the content of the 25 most frequently retrieved websites marketing AD dietary supplements. We found that the majority of websites and their products claimed AD-related benefits, including improvement and enhancement of function, treatment for AD, prevention of AD, (...)

    Worship in a post-lockdown context: A ritual-liturgical perspective.Hilton R. Scott - 2020 - HTS Theological Studies 76 (1):8.
In this unprecedented time, there are many questions and plenty of speculation surrounding what life will be like after the South African nationwide lockdown. There is concern over the effects that the lockdown will have on worship services when churches are in a position to open their doors to the public once more. As a result of recognising the lockdown as a liminal phase, perspectives are shared when considering how the church will gather again in a post-lockdown context and therefore (...)

    Healing as transformation and restoration: A ritual-liturgical exploration.Hilton Scott & Casparus J. Wepener - 2017 - HTS Theological Studies 73 (4):1-9.
Illness is a reality that affects all people, and healing is the main reason why people attend worship services in sub-Saharan Africa. According to the Ritual Studies scholar Ronald Grimes, illness is a social reality; it is socially imagined and constructed. Healing in the church is something that many believers experience, also in the context of worship and liturgy. In order to explore such healing as it occurs in liturgy a research project was undertaken making use of both empirical work (...)

When we accept oppression of some, we feed the oppression of others, and we make space for domination driven by false ideas of inferiority and lesser worth. When we discount the inherent preciousness of animals who think and feel, we erase precious parts of ourselves. When we consider living beings as "livestock," it's no wonder we pillage the unthinking yet irreplaceable living earth. Sub-Human is a robustly researched, sharply critical yet comfortingly human call to arms, diving deeply into the theory (...)
