Mysticism of Chan/Zen Enlightenment: A Rational Understanding Through Practices.Ming Dong Gu & Jianping Guo - 2017 - Dao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy 16 (2):235-251.
There exists a widely accepted opinion in Chan/Zen studies that Chan enlightenment is a mysterium ineffabile, impenetrable by human intellect. Reviewing the debate between Hu (...)Shi 胡適 and D. T. Suzuki over Chan enlightenment and accounts of testimony by Chan masters and practitioners in history, this essay argues that Chan enlightenment can be understood rationally and intellectually. By analyzing the time-honored Chan practices that have led to enlightenment, it seeks to understand the mystery as an extraordinary mental condition in which an enlightened person temporarily blocks thinking in terms of language, consciousness, and intellect, and experiences a momentaryerasingof what has been impressed on the psyche since birth. Does Moral Leadership Enhance Employee Creativity? Employee Identification with Leader and LeaderMember Exchange in the Chinese Context.Qinxuan Gu, Thomas Li-Ping Tang & Wan Jiang - 2015 - Journal of Business Ethics 126 (3):513-529.
In this article, drawing from a relational perspective, we explore the relationship between moral leadership and employee creativity, treat employee identification with leader and leadermember exchange (...)as two mediators, and develop a new theoretical model of employee creativity. Our data collected from 160 supervisorsubordinate dyads in the Peoples Republic of China demonstrate that moral leadership is positively related to both employee identification with leader and LMX. Further, employee identification with leader partially mediates the relationship between moral leadership and LMX. In particular, employee identification with leader greatly enhances LMX which leads to high creativity. Overall, the relationship between moral leadership and employee creativity is mediated by not only employee identification with leader but also LMX. Our findings offer a new theoretical framework for future theory development and testing on creativity as well as practical implications for researchers and managers in business ethics. (shrink)

Do Victims of Supervisor Bullying Suffer From Poor Creativity? Social Cognitive and Social Comparison Perspectives.Thomas Tang, Qinxuan Gu & Wan Jiang - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 157 (3):865-884.
This study explores the dark side of leadership, treats creative self-efficacy as a mediator, and frames supervisor bullying and employee creativity in the context of social (...)cognition and social comparison. We theorize that with a high social comparison orientation, the combination of high supervisory abuse toward themselves and low supervisory abuse toward other team members leads to a double whammy effect: When employees aresingled outfor abuse, these victims suffer from not only low creative self-efficacy due to supervisory abuse but also low supervisory creativity ratings. Results based on our two-wave data collected from multiple sources253 employees and their 77 immediate supervisorssupport our theory. The significant three-way interaction effect reveals that when social comparison orientation is high and peer abusive supervision is low, own abusive supervision creates the strongest negative impact on creative self-efficacy, which is significantly related to supervisory low creativity rating. Our discoveries of egregious bullying offer provocative theoretical, empirical, and practical implications to the fields of leadership, abusive supervision, creativity, and business ethics. (shrink)

An Exposition of Zhou Yi Studies in Modern Neo-Confucianism.Guo Qiyong - 2006 - Frontiers of Philosophy in China 1 (2):185-203.
The representatives of modern Neo-Confucianism all greatly value Yi Zhuan and regard it as one of their spiritual resources, and give their own creative interpretations and (...)transformations. Xiong Shili's ontological-cosmological theory takes "qian yuan" as its center; Ma Yifu has a theory of ontology-cultivation centered on "nature-principle"; Fang Dongmei has a metaphysics of production and reproduction; Mou Zongsan takes the view of "completely knowing the fathomless and understanding transformation" as a moral metaphysics; and in Tang Junyi there is a theory of the harmony of doctrines on Heaven and man in which "the knowledge of divine understanding" is its key concept. They employ modern philosophical concepts and thinking to illustrate the cosmology, ontology, theory of life, theory of human nature, theory of spiritual worlds, axiology and their connections in Zhou Yi. They affirm that the characteristics of Chinese philosophy that are different from Western philosophy consist in a naturalist view of vital life, a harmonious view of totality, an axiological view that values exist in natural universe and the world of fact, the pursuit of Good and Beauty, and intuitive experience of inner world. MediatingFacein Triadic Political Communication: a CDA Analysis of Press Conference InterpretersDiscursive (Re)Construction of Chinese Governments Image.Chonglong Gu - 2018 - Critical Discourse Studies 16 (2):201-221.
ABSTRACTThe pragmatist reform and opening-up in 1978 has revolutionised the way China communicates internally and engages with the outside world. Firmly embedded within this broader historical (...)context, the interpreter-mediated and televised Premier-Meets-the-Press conferences are a high-profile institutional event in China. At this discursive event, the Chinese premierranked second in Chinas political hierarchyis put in the international media limelight, answering journalistsquestions on a range of topics. The section involving the interpretersrendering of journalistsquestions is triadic and dynamic and represents a particularly interesting site of ideological contestation, which can be conceptualised profitably using Bakhtins concept dialogised heteroglossia. Drawing on a corpus containing 20 yearspress conference data between 1998 and 2017, this CDA study interrogates the interpretersagency, particularly in constructing the Chinese governments image when rendering journalistsquestions. Despite the commonplace assumptions of interpreters being impartial with little agency, the government-affiliated interpreters are found to actively engage in facework and image construction. This leads to a discursive pattern described in Van Dijks ideological square, which involves further emphasising and foregrounding the positive elements yet de-emphasising and mitigating the negative elements about Beijing. Guo Xiang's ontological individualism represents a case of philosophical construction based on his interpretation of the Zhuangzi. His concept of the self-transformation of the individual who (...) is self-born, with self-nature and without dependence on others supports the idea of individual autonomy. Nevertheless, each individual's act for self-interest still benefits other individuals in a non-teleological mutual accommodation. The path from duhua of each individual on the level of existence, to the xiangyin among individuals on the level of action consequence, to the ideal of xuanming , is the path on which the world is to proceed. Enhancing Customer Civility in the Peer-to-Peer Economy: Empirical Evidence from the Hospitality Sector.Shuang Ma, Huimin Gu, Daniel P. Hampson & Yonggui Wang - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 167 (1):77-95.
Customer civility is an established construct in the study of ethical consumption. However, scholars have paid insufficient attention to customer civility in relation to the flourishing peer- (...)to-peer economy. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to develop and test a theoretical framework which examines the antecedents of the customer civility in the P2P economy. We use social exchange theory to develop a model that posits customer interaction experiences with property owners, properties, and P2P platforms as antecedents of customer civility in the P2P economy. Two studies were used to test our framework: Study 1 comprises a survey of Chinese customers ; Study 2 involves secondary data crawled from the Web site of Xiaozhu, one of Chinas largest P2P accommodation platforms. OLS regression analysis was used for hypothesis testing. Results demonstrate three antecedents of customer civility in the P2P accommodation sector: interpersonal trust, property experience, and platform governance. In addition, the positive effect of interpersonal trust on customer civility is stronger when customers have high economic incentive, while the effect of property experience is significantly stronger when customers have low economic incentive. You Are Not Young Anymore!’: Gender, Age and the Politics of Reproduction in Post-Reform China.Xiaorong Gu - 2021 - Asian Bioethics Review 13 (1):57-76.
Based on in-depth interview data and popular culture texts, the current study has explored the politics of reproduction revolving around womens age in contemporary China. Conceptualizing (...) reproduction as a site of contestation and politics between different, and often contradictory, sets of discourses and power structures, I pursue a feminist and social constructivist analysis of the politics of reproduction in the lives of a group of urban professional women who are yet to enter motherhood at their late 20s and 30s. I engage with Inhorns concept ofdisrupted reproductionto highlight the politically, morally and emotionally charged contestations in theproblematizedreproductive lives of these women. I unveil how Chinese professional women beyond theirreproductive primeare discursively constructed asdisrupters’, who fail their femininity test tied to a motherhood identity within the family context, challenge thenaturalbiological law regulating their reproductive bodies, and face a doomed reproductive future fraught with medical, physical and emotional traumas which ART cannot alleviate. Such a discourse renders invisible the structural causes of problems and challenges professional women face in negotiating parenthood, social norms and selfhood, which systematically put them under pervasive social surveillance and discipline.
