Transformative Leadership: Achieving Unparalleled Excellence. [REVIEW]Cam Caldwell, Rolf D. Dixon, Larry A. Floyd, Joe Chaudoin, Jonathan Post & Gaynor Cheokas - 2012 - Journal of Business Ethics 109 (2):175-187.
The ongoing cynicism about leaders and organizations calls for a new standard of ethical leadership that we have labeled “transformative leadership.” This new leadership model integrates ethically-based features of six other well-regarded leadership perspectives and combines key normative and instrumental elements of each of those six perspectives. Transformative leadership honors the governance obligations of leaders by demonstrating a commitment to the welfare of all stakeholders and by seeking to optimize long-term wealth creation. Citing the scholarly literature about leadership theory, we (...)

    Visualization, Interpretation, and Cognitive Cybernetics.Gaynor S. Paton & Jonathan Henderson - 2015 - Interpretation: SEG 3 (3):SX41-SX48.
Interpretation of 3D seismic data involves the analysis and integration of many forms and derivatives of the original reflectivity data. This can lead to the generation of an overwhelming amount of data that can be difficult to use effectively when relying on conventional interpretation techniques. Our natural cognitive processes have evolved so that we can absorb and understand large amounts of complex data extremely quickly and effectively. However, these cognitive processes are heavily influenced by context and color perception. Seismic interpretation (...)

  5. Animal Agendas: Conflict Over Productive Animals in Twentieth-Century Australian Cities.Andrea Gaynor - 2007 - Society and Animals 15 (1):29-42.
Over the course of the twentieth century, the number of productive nonhuman animals in Australian cities declined dramatically. This decline resulted—at least in part—from an imaginative geography, in which productive animals were deemed inappropriate occupants of urban spaces. A class-based prioritization of amenity, privacy, order, and the protection of real property values—as well as a gender order within which animal-keeping was not recognized as a legitimate economic activity for women—shaped this imaginative geography of animals that found its most critical expression (...)

Participation in Higher Education: Aspirations, Attainment and Social Background.Paul Croll & Gaynor Attwood - 2013 - British Journal of Educational Studies 61 (2):187-202.
ABSTRACT The recent report of the Milburn Review into Social Mobility highlights the under-representation of young people from lower socio-economic groups in higher education and encourages universities and others to act to remedy this situation as a contribution to greater social mobility. The paper uses data from the Longitudinal Study of Young People in England to examine the relationship between social background, attainment and university participation. The results show that differences in school-level attainment associated with social background are by far (...)

The Accuracy of Students' Predictions of Their GCSE Grades.Gaynor Attwood, Paul Croll, Carol Fuller & Kathryn Last - 2013 - Educational Studies 39 (4):444-454.
The paper reports a study that investigated the relationship between students? self-predicted and actual General Certificate of Secondary Education results in order to establish the extent of over- and under-prediction and whether this varies by subject and across genders and socio-economic groupings. It also considered the relationship between actual and predicted attainment and attitudes towards going to university. The sample consisted of 109 young people in two schools being followed up from an earlier study. Just over 50% of predictions were (...)

Over the past two decades there has been a burgeoning interest and research into experiments and innovations in participatory governance. While advocates highlight the merits of such new governance arrangements in moving beyond traditional interest group representations and deepening democracy through deliberation with a broad range of civic associations, critics express concern about the political legitimacy and democratic accountability of participating associations, highlighting in particular the dangers of co-option and faction. Addressing these concerns, a number of theorists identify an important (...)

The Structure and Implications of Children's Attitudes to School.Paul Croll, Gaynor Attwood, Carol Fuller & Kathryn Last - 2008 - British Journal of Educational Studies 56 (4):382-399.
The paper reports a study of children's attitudes to school based on a questionnaire survey of 845 pupils in their first year of secondary school in England, together with interviews with a sample of the children. A clearly structured set of attitudes emerged from a factor analysis which showed a distinction between instrumental and affective aspects of attitudes but also dimensions within these, including a sense of teacher commitment and school as a difficult environment. Virtually all children had a strong (...)

    Assessment of Parental Decision-Making in Neonatal Cardiac Research: A Pilot Study.A. T. Nathan, K. S. Hoehn, R. F. Ittenbach, J. W. Gaynor, S. Nicolson, G. Wernovsky & R. M. Nelson - 2010 - Journal of Medical Ethics 36 (2):106-110.
Objective To assess parental permission for a neonate's research participation using the MacArthur competence assessment tool for clinical research (MacCAT-CR), specifically testing the components of understanding, appreciation, reasoning and choice. Study Design Quantitative interviews using study-specific MacCAT-CR tools. Hypothesis Parents of critically ill newborns would produce comparable MacCAT-CR scores to healthy adult controls despite the emotional stress of an infant with critical heart disease or the urgency of surgery. Parents of infants diagnosed prenatally would have higher MacCAT-CR scores than parents (...)

Research Ethics: Harmonisation of Ethics Committees' Practice in 10 European Countries.R. Hernandez, M. Cooney, C. Dualé, M. Gálvez & S. Gaynor - 2009 - Journal of Medical Ethics 35 (11):696-700.
Background: The Directive 2001/20/EC was an important first step towards consistency in the requirements and processes for clinical trials across Europe. However, by applying the same rules to all types of drug trials and transposing the Directive’s principles into pre-existing national legislations, the Directive somewhat failed to meet its facilitation and harmonisation targets. In the field of ethics, the Directive 2001/20/EC conditioned the way of understanding and transposing the “single opinion” process in each country. This led to a situation in (...)

Closing the Seismic Resolution Gap of Fractures Through Seismic and Image-Log Analysis, a North Sea Case Study.Ryan Michael Williams, Enric Pascual-Cebrian, Jon Charles Gutmanis & Gaynor Suzanne Paton - 2017 - Interpretation 5 (3):SJ21-SJ30.
The “seismic resolution gap” has been an area of ambiguity ever since the results of 3D seismic interpretation have been used as inputs for modeling purposes because many important structural events such as fractures are at or below seismic resolution, which can impinge reservoir properties such as porosity and permeability. Having the means to accurately map these events with confidence has always been a challenge. More often than not, localized mapping of these features at borehole conditions can be achieved by (...)

The Picture Talk Project: Aboriginal Community Input on Consent for Research.Emily F. M. Fitzpatrick, Gaynor Macdonald, Alexandra L. C. Martiniuk, June Oscar, Heather D’Antoine, Maureen Carter, Tom Lawford & Elizabeth J. Elliott - 2019 - BMC Medical Ethics 20 (1):12.
The consent and community engagement process for research with Indigenous communities is rarely evaluated. Research protocols are not always collaborative, inclusive or culturally respectful. If participants do not trust or understand the research, selection bias may occur in recruitment, affecting study results potentially denying participants the opportunity to provide more knowledge and greater understanding about their community. Poorly informed consent can also harm the individual participant and the community as a whole. Invited by local Aboriginal community leaders of the Fitzroy (...)

(Re)Interpretations: The Shapes of Justice in Women's Experience.Lisa Dresdner & Laurel S. Peterson (eds.) - 2009 - Cambridge Scholars Press.
Patriarchal institutions govern all aspects of women's lives: their minds, their bodies, and their souls. Additionally, they govern the ways in which women are perceived by others and the ways in which women perceive themselves. (Re) Interpretations: The Shapes of Justice in Women's Experience, is a collection of essays on language, religion, war, sex trafficking, and medicine-the patriarchal structures that form the basis of western society and, thus, are in many ways inherently unjust. The essays illustrate the multitude of ways (...)
