The Image of Ranke in American and German Historical Thought.Georg G. Iggers - 1962 - History and Theory 2 (1):17.
in America, Ranke has been known for his methodology: critical examination of sources in order to establish the facts. Ranke's We es eigentlich gewesen was the motto of "scientific" history renouncing all generalizations and philosophy for detailed description. In Germany, Ranke was considered anti-aprioristic, opposed to any schematization of history, but not anti-philosophical. Ranke, influenced by German idealism, sought to transcend mere factual reconstruction by proceeding from con templating particulars to understanding general truths and introspective apprehension of - living reality. (...)

    Comments on F. R. Ankersmit's Paper, "Historicism: An Attempt at Synthesis".Georg G. Iggers - 1995 - History and Theory 34 (3):162-167.
My differences with F. R. Ankersmit's essay are historiographical and theoretical. On the historiographical plane I disagree with the sharp distinction he draws between the "ontological realism" of Enlightenment historiography and the historical outlook of classical historicism. An examination of Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire shows that Gibbon indeed takes into account internal changes in the Roman Empire. Ranke and Droysen on the other hand assume that the rubjects of their study, whether the Papacy or the Prussian (...)

    Two Contrasting French Approaches to Historiography.Georg G. Iggers - 2014 - History and Theory 53 (1):105-118.
This essay reviews two books in the French Que Sais-je? series by Charles-Olivier Carbonell in 1981 and by Nicolas Offenstadt in 2011 on the topic of historiography. Offenstadt's volume is intended to bring Carbonell's up to date, but goes in very different directions. There is general agreement among historians that a fundamental reorientation has taken place in historical thought and writing in the past half century, about which quite a bit has been written in recent years in the West, including (...)

New Directions in Historical Studies in the German Democratic Republic.Georg G. Iggers - 1989 - History and Theory 28 (1):59-77.
The sharp separation of Eastern, and particularly Soviet and GDR, scholarship from the West is in part owing to ideological self-isolation, and part due to lack of interest or unwillingness to accept this scholarship in the West - The institutional framework within which historical studies take place in the GDR has placed severe limits on diversity within the historical profession. The official theoretical basis of historiography is represented by dialectical materialism, as a theory of reality, and historical materialism, as the (...)
