Poverty, Patriotism, and National Covenant: Jonathan Edwards and Public Life.Gerald R. McDermott - 2003 - Journal of Religious Ethics 31 (2):229 - 251.
In this essay I address three ways in which Edwards can inform Christian understanding of public life. First I show how Edwards provides both philosophical and theological rationales for social engagement and thereby resists the separation of religion from public life, and use his consideration of poverty as an illustration. Part II examines Edwards's dialectical treatment of patriotism, demonstrating both its importance to the Christian life and its susceptibility to deceptive accommodation to culture. Finally, in Part III I discuss Edwards's (...)

  2. One Holy and Happy Society: The Public Theology of Jonathan Edwards.Gerald McDermott - 1992 - Pennsylvania State University Press.
Jonathan Edwards was arguably this country's greatest theologian and its finest philosopher before the nineteenth century. His school if disciples exerted enormous influence on the religious and political cultures of late colonial and early republican America. Hence any study of religion and politics in early America must take account of this theologian and his legacy. Yet historians still regard Edward's social theory as either nonexistent or underdeveloped. Gerald McDermott demonstrates, to the contrary, that Edwards was very interested in (...)

    The Basic Writings of Josiah Royce. [REVIEW]J. B. R. - 1969 - Review of Metaphysics 23 (2):362-363.
John J. McDermott, who has already distinguished himself by publishing the best available selection of William James' writings, has now performed the same task for Josiah Royce. Although Josiah Royce is normally classified as one of the American "classical" philosophers, he is probably the least read of these philosophers. These skillfully edited volumes may go a long way to making Royce's comprehensive and complex thought available. There is a brief introduction in which McDermott nicely conveys a "feel" for (...)

    The Writings of William James: A Comprehensive Edition. [REVIEW]J. B. R. - 1968 - Review of Metaphysics 22 (1):162-162.
James is being rediscovered. And we have needed a volume that presents the multifaceted thought of one of America's most original and vital thinkers. McDermott has done an exceedingly skillful and sensitive job in presenting sections that reveal the man, the educator, the psychologist, the cultural critic, and the philosopher. The entire edition of the Essays in Radical Empiricism and A Pluralistic Universe is included as well as the 1907 edition of Pragmatism. There are also selected letters and chapters (...)

The popular mind is deep and means a thousand times more than it knows. It is fitting that the Royal Institute of Philosophy series on American philosophy include a session on the thought of Josiah Royce, for his most formidable philosophical work, The World and the Individual , was a result of his Gifford lectures in the not too distant city of Aberdeen in 1899 and 1900. The invitation to offer the Gifford lectures was somewhat happenstance, for it was extended (...)

  31. Jonathan Edwards Confronts the Gods: Christian Theology, Enlightenment Religion, and Non-Christian Faiths.Gerald R. McDermott - 2000 - Oxford University Press USA.
This is a study of how American theologian Jonathan Edwards battled deist arguments about revelation and God's fairness to non-Christians. Author Gerald McDermott argues that Edwards was preparing before his death a sophisticated theological response to Enlightenment religion that was unparalleled in the eighteenth century and surprisingly generous toward non-Christian traditions.

    Honoring Jonathan Edwards.Philip L. Quinn - 2003 - Journal of Religious Ethics 31 (2):299 - 321.
In this response to the papers on Jonathan Edwards's ethical thought by Stephen A. Wilson, Gerald R. McDermott, William C. Spohn, and Roland A. Delattre, I comment on their efforts to show that ideas drawn from Edwards can be successfully appropriated for use in contemporary ethics. I conclude that the four authors build a strong cumulative case for the view that some elements of Edwards's thought can serve as resources for our ethical reflections. But I also argue for (...)

The moral issues involved in doctors assisting patients to die with dignity are of absolutely central concern to the medical profession, ethicists, and the public at large. The debate is fuelled by cases that extend far beyond passive euthanasia to the active consideration of killing by physicians. The need for a sophisticated but lucid exposition of the two sides of the argument is now urgent. This book supplies that need. Two prominent philosophers, Gerald Dworkin and R. G. Frey present (...)

Why All Welfare States Are Unreasonable*: GERALD F. GAUS.Gerald F. Gaus - 1998 - Social Philosophy and Policy 15 (2):1-33.
Liberal political theory is all too familiar with the divide between classical and welfare-state liberals. Classical liberals, as we all know, insist on the importance of small government, negative liberty, and private property. Welfare-state liberals, on the other hand, although they too stress civil rights, tend to be sympathetic to “positive liberty,” are for a much more expansive government, and are often ambivalent about private property. Although I do not go so far as to entirely deny the usefulness of this (...)

The career of Gerald of Wales as student, teacher, royal chaplain, prelate, historian, polemicist and inveterate storyteller spanned some fifty-five years from 1168 to 1223. During that time he wrote at least ten major works, among them four books on the geography and history of Wales and Ireland, a manual for princes, a substantial collection of letters, two polemical treatises, and an autobiography. Together these have earned him a significant place in medieval literary history, and it is not without (...)
