    Contemporary European Philosophy. [REVIEW]R. D. - 1957 - Review of Metaphysics 10 (3):535-536.
In brief compass, this book gives most helpful summaries of the leading philosophical influences of our day, both by individuals and by schools. "Contemporary" is taken to mean "since the First World War," and "European" means "mostly French and German," though there are separate chapters on Russell, Croce, and Whitehead, and mention is made of James and Dewey. An unusually comprehensive bibliography is included.--D. R.

    Symbols of Transformation. [REVIEW]R. D. - 1957 - Review of Metaphysics 10 (4):721-721.
This magnificent volume is the basic text for the study of Jung. Originally published in 1912 under the title, Wandlungen und Symbole der Libido, it marked Jung's first serious deviation from Freudian psychoanalysis and led to the complete break between the two men the following year. The chapter on "The Concept of Libido" gives Jung's reasons for generalizing this crucial notion from its specifically sexual meaning to that of psychic energy. The present translation is from the fourth German edition of (...)

Der Symbolbegriff in der Neueren Religionsphilosophie Und Theologie. [REVIEW]R. D. - 1955 - Review of Metaphysics 9 (2):361-362.
A model of German scholarship comprehensive and carefully written. The first part is devoted to an exposition of the views of the symbol taken by such thinkers as Goethe, Cassirer, Tillich, and Jaspers. The second part is a more systematic discussion of the symbol as it functions in theology and religion.--D. R.

An examination of the contemporary Italian movement associated with M. P. Sciacca, and the serious application of dialectical and phenomenological methods to unveil the structure of "intentionality" or "spirit." An appraisal of Sciacca together with a sample critique of Dante follows a competent summary of the prevailing positions.--D. B. B.

Newleavers and Educational Institutions: Revisiting Schutz’s Research on Strangers with an Intercultural Approach.Germán D. Fernández-Vavrik - 2019 - Schutzian Research 11:75-102.
As a consequence of the explosion of enrollments, higher education institutions have been confronted by new categories of students the last forty years. In this paper, cultural and political dimensions of the integration of students into educational institutions will be explored. The focus will be on the experience of what I called “newleavers,” namely, people who are leaving their environment of origin without knowing if they will return. The contradictory commitments and challenges faced by newleavers will be studied with a (...)

    Paul-Henri Thiry (Baron) D'Holbach.Michael LeBuffe - 2014 - Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.
Paul Henri Thiry, Baron d'Holbach was a philosopher, translator, and prominent social figure of the French Enlightenment. In his philosophical writings Holbach developed a deterministic and materialistic metaphysics which grounded his polemics against organized religion and his utilitarian ethical and political theory. As a translator, Holbach made significant contributions to the European Enlightenment in science and religion. He translated German works on chemistry and geology into French, summarizing many of the German advances in these areas in his entries in Diderot's (...)

The French Revolution and the New School of Europe: Towards a Political Interpretation of German Idealism.Michael Morris - 2011 - European Journal of Philosophy 19 (4):532-560.
Abstract: In this paper I consider the significant but generally overlooked role that the French Revolution played in the development of German Idealism. Specifically, I argue that Reinhold and Fichte's engagement in revolutionary political debates directly shaped their interpretation of Kant's philosophy, leading them (a) to overlook his reliance upon common sense, (b) to misconstrue his conception of the relationship between philosophical theory and received cognitive practice, (c) to fail to appreciate the fundamentally regressive nature of his transcendental argumentative strategy, (...)

?History is the most dangerous compound yet contrived by the chemistry of intellect?: it was in response to these words by Paul Valéry that Marc Bloch, professor of economic history at the Sorbonne, after the defeat of 1940, began writing a book on ?how and why history is studied.? He gave it the provisional title Apologie pour l'Histoire ou Métier d'historien translated into English as The Historian's Craft. In the spring of 1944, he was killed by a German firing squad (...)

    O– and D–Predicates: A Semantic Approach to the Unaccusative–Unergative Distinction.Ingrid Kaufmann - 1995 - Journal of Semantics 12 (4):377-427.
In this paper a conceptually based distinction between two classes of semantic predicates is proposed D–prediates, which encode object definig properties, and O–predicates, which encode optional properties. While the distinction between the properties is conceptually motivated, the two corresponding predicate classes are defined with reference to a logically based notion of ‘(predicate)field’. It is argued that on the basis of this distinction the differences in the grammatical behaviour of unaccusaive and unergative verbs in German can be derived and do not (...)

L’article examine la position qu’a prise le théologien allemand Troeltsch surtout à partir de son dernier ouvrage, le Der Historismus. Such is the question raised by the (...)
