En este artículo se reconstruyen y contraponen dos conceptualizaciones del trabajo en el marco del capitalismo actual. De un lado, Habermas y Gorz entienden que el trabajo pierde centralidad en la vida social a la vez que se halla atravesado por lógicas instrumentales y productivistas; ante lo cual proponen la ampliación de otras esferas sociales gobernadas por principios diferentes de los dominantes en el espacio productivo. Del otro lado, el autonomismo italiano avizora un cambio cualitativo en los procesos productivos actuales, (...) los cuales abandonarían paulatinamente las lógicas instrumentales para pasar a ser gobernados por otras más vinculadas a la comunicación, la cooperación y la búsqueda de autonomía. En este artículo se realizará un examen comparativo de estas dos líneas, procurando elucidar sus supuestos teóricos, y teniendo como horizonte los requerimientos de una teoría crítica que pueda estudiar el presente detectando tanto sus fisuras como sus posibilidades inmanentes de transformación social y política. In this paper two conceptualizations of labour in current capitalism are recons-tructed and opposed. On the one hand, Habermas and Gorz understand that labor loses centrality in social life while it is crossed by instrumental and productive logics, whereupon they propose to expand other social spheres governed by principles other than those dominant in the productive space. On the other hand, the Italian Autonomism envisions a qualitative change in current production processes, which gradually abandon the instrumental logic to become governed by others more related to communication, cooperation and the search for autonomy. Here a comparison of those two lines will take place, trying to elucidate its theoretical assumptions, and according to the requirements of a critical theory that can study the present detecting both its fissures and its inherent possibilities for social and political transformation. The Holographic Principle holds that the information in any region of space and time exists on the surface of that region. Layers of the holographic, universal “now” go from the inception of the universe to the present. Universal Consciousness is the timeless source of actuality and mentality. Information is experience, and the expansion of the “now” leads to higher and higher orders of experience in the Universe, with various levels of consciousness emerging from experience. The brain consists of a nested (...) hierarchy of surfaces that range from the most elementary field through the neuron, neural group, and the whole brain. Evidence from the evolution and structure of the brain shows that optimal surface areas in a variety of structures are conserved with respect to underlying surfaces. Microgenesis, the becoming of the mental state through a process of recapitulation of development and evolution, is in full accord with the Holographic Principle. Evidence from a wide variety of contexts indicates the capacity on the mind for total recall of past life events and for access to universal information, indicating connection with the holographic surfaces of prior “nows” and with the Universal holographic boundary. In summation, the Holographic Principle can help us explain the unity and mechanisms of perception, experience, memory, and consciousness. (shrink)

The genesis of actuality from potentiality, with the apparent role of the observer, is an important and unsolved problem which essentially defines science‟s view of reality in a variety of contexts. Observation then becomes lawful and not emergent. Panentheism is needed to provide a mechanism for order outside of blind efficient causality, in a Universal final causality. Classical physics is over a hundred years out of date, yet scientific models remain mechanistic and deterministic. Deism, a remnant of classical cosmology, is (...) examined and rejected by scientists and philosophers, and certain pre-scientific notions of religion are scorned, putting the matter to rest. Quantum physics, in its basic form, is necessary if there is to be any philosophical or scientific notion of free will and self-determination, as potentiality. Quantum metaphysics is also needed because classical physics is fundamentally limited to localized external relations, lacking the internality and non-locality of relatedness. God, or the equivalent, is necessary to complete the equation. Physicists now tell us that reality is fundamentally mental and is created by observation. Observation is here taken to mean experience, with experience going all the way down to the lowest order of a Universal mentality. (shrink)

Psychiatry is rapidly adopting digital phenotyping and artificial intelligence/machine learning tools to study mental illness based on tracking participants’ locations, online activity, phone and text message usage, heart rate, sleep, physical activity, and more. Existing ethical frameworks for return of individual research results (IRRs) are inadequate to guide researchers for when, if, and how to return this unprecedented number of potentially sensitive results about each participant’s real-world behavior. To address this gap, we convened an interdisciplinary expert working group, supported by (...) a National Institute of Mental Health grant. Building on established guidelines and the emerging norm of returning results in participant-centered research, we present a novel framework specific to the ethical, legal, and social implications of returning IRRs in digital phenotyping research. Our framework offers researchers, clinicians, and Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) urgently needed guidance, and the principles developed here in the context of psychiatry will be readily adaptable to other therapeutic areas. The so-called “Fragment on Machines” of Marx has become in recent decades one of his most revisited texts. This has undoubtedly occurred under the influence of the reading carried out by the school of thought known as Italian autonomism, for whom this text would anticipate the stage of capitalism that opens after the crisis of the 1970s. The “Fragment” would theoretically articulate this stage in terms of a “crisis of value measurement” that would result from the impossibility of framing the (...) new form acquired by labor in “postfordism” into the social norm of working time. The fundamental task of this article is to discuss this interpretative key of the “Fragment” and conceptually articulate its central elements in order to undertake an alternative reading of it, which would also have the potential to critically analyze current capitalism. Las transformaciones acaecidas en el sistema productivo aproximadamente desde principios de la década de 1970 vienen generado una serie de discusiones y posicionamientos teóricos respecto del lugar del trabajo en las sociedades contemporáneas. Habermas y Gorz son dos de los pensadores que en este contexto han sostenido que las sociedades desarrolladas transitan un modelo en el cual inevitablemente el tiempo de trabajo necesario disminuye, tornándose estructurales la desocupación y precarización laborales. Sin embargo, esto será visto como una oportunidad, pues estos (...) autores entienden que el trabajo habría dejado de ser hace tiempo el lugar en el que los individuos podrían realizarse personal y vitalmente, incluso superado el capitalismo. El desafío radicaría entonces en pensar alternativas ante la crisis de la llamada “sociedad del trabajo”. No obstante, los discursos contemporáneos de gestión empresarial parecen colocar un signo de interrogación a dichos análisis al pregonar el involucramiento activo —personal y afectivo— de los sujetos en los procesos productivos. Lo cual estaría dando lugar a la siguiente paradoja: lo que aquellos autores entendían que sólo podía florecer allende los espacios productivos es precisamente lo que la gestión contemporánea del trabajo demanda en primer lugar, y ello en miras de mejorar la productividad e incrementar las ganancias de las empresas. El objetivo de este artículo es exponer con detalle y rigor conceptual esta paradoja, desde el horizonte ético-epistemológico de una teoría crítica que pueda estudiar el presente detectando tanto sus fisuras como sus posibilidades inmanentes de transformación social y política. Las revoluciones filosóficas se distinguen de las revoluciones científicas en algunos aspectos que discutimos en este trabajo. Defendemos que la revolución kuhniana consiste en la naturalización de la filosofía de la ciencia que se desprende de sus trabajos y discutimos la analogía biológica que (...) L'œuvre de Deleuze contient encore beaucoup de mystères. L'unité de la philosophie deleuzienne est-elle à chercher du côté d'une ontologie? Constitue-t-elle une ardente défense de l'immanence radicale? S'agit-il plutôt d'une philosophie du virtuel? Le consensus fait défaut autour de cette œuvre polymorphe. K. Ansell Pearson prend ici le parti de placer l'entreprise deleuzienne sous la bannière du vitalisme. Cet aspect de l'œuvre deleuzienne avait bien sûr déjà été remarqué. De manière explicite, Deleuze condamne lui-même l'idéalisme au nom des forces de (...) la vie. L'auteur ne nous apprend donc rien de neuf en assimilant le deleuzisme à la dernière des grandes pensées vitalistes. Là où il innove, c'est en donnant une consistance à l'ensemble des concepts biophilosophiques du système deleuzien. Des notions insuffisamment problématisées par les interprètes qui se contentent le plus souvent de reproduire la langue deleuzienne sans en penser la cohérence d'ensemble. C'est ainsi que les notions de devenir-animal, de vie anorganique et de corps sans organes trouvent un sens à travers l'idée avancée par l'auteur d'une «vie germinale». (shrink)

Cellular dedifferentiation is an important developmental response to perturbations in morphogenesis. In the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum this process gives cells the flexibility, when multicellular development is disrupted, to respond to nutrients and reinitiate vegetative growth. Recent studies in D. discoideum described by Soll and colleagues(1) show that genes previously thought to be expressed only during spore germination are also expressed during induced dedifferentiation, suggesting that similar molecular mechanisms are involved in these two developmental processes. It should now be (...) possible to determine whether the developmental programs that control dedifferentiation during spore germination also control conversion of cell types in the multicellular organism. Objetivo del presente artículo es poner de relieve las contradicciones de la relación entre bioética y bioderecho que, lejos de ser un problema meramente teórico, tiene un impacto real en las reglamentaciones de las innovaciones en el campo de la biomedicina. Con el ánimo de demostrar esa fuerte conexión de la cuestión aparentemente teórica con la praxis, el ensayo, dotado de una metodología inductiva, moverá sus primeros pasos a partir de las técnicas de edición genética germinal. En la primera (...) parte del trabajo se aclararán matices científicos de dichas técnicas y se presentarán los primeros avances de la reglamentación jurídica que tienen su origen en el Consejo de Europa. Finalmente, a través de los límites y contradicciones de la reglamentación supuestamente biojurídica de la edición genética germinal se pondrá en evidencia la asimetría que domina en la relación entre bioética y bioderecho. ---The goal of this article is to stand out contradictions in the relationship among bioethics and biolaw that, far from being merely a theoretical quandary, has a real impact in the regulations of innovations in the biomedical field. Aiming to show that strong connection between the apparently theoretical question with the praxis, the essay, with an inductive methodology, goes straight showing the first steps of regulation of the germ-line gene editing. In the first part of the article, after a summary about the scientific highlights of germ-line gene editing, we undertake an investigation on the juridical regulation of germline-gene editing, based on the Council of Europe’s provisions. Finally, showing the limitations and contradictions of these supposedly biojuridical regulations, we highlight the dominant asymmetry in the relationship among bioethics and biolaw. (shrink)

This paper traces the history of artificial insemination by selected donors as a strategy for positive eugenic improvement. While medical artificial insemination has a longer history, its use as a eugenic strategy was first mooted in late nineteenth-century France. It was then developed as ‘scientific motherhood’ for war widows and those without partners by Marion Louisa Piddington in Australia following the Great War. By the 1930s AID was being more widely used clinically in Britain as a medical solution to male (...) infertility for married couples. In 1935 English postal clerk, Herbert Brewer, promoted AID as the socialization of the germ plasm in a eugenic scheme. The next year Hermann Muller, American Drosophila geneticist and eugenicist, presented his plan for human improvement by AID to Stalin. Some twenty years later, Muller, together with Robert Klark Graham, began planning a Foundation for Germinal Choice in California. This was finally opened in 1980 as the first practical experiment in eugenic AID, producing some 215 babies over the twenty years it functioned. While AID appeared to be a means of squaring a eugenic circle by separating paternity from love relationships, and so allowing eugenic improvement without inhibiting individual choice in marriage, it found very little favour with those who might use it, not least because of a couple’s desire to have their ‘own’ children has always seemed stronger than any eugenic aspirations. No state has ever contemplated using AID as a social policy. (shrink)

Most eukaryotes possess many copies of rDNA. Organismal selection alone cannot maintain rRNA function because the effects of mutations in one rDNA are diluted by the presence of many other rDNAs. rRNA quality is maintained by processes that increase homogeneity of rRNA within, and heterogeneity among, germ cells thereby increasing the effectiveness of cellular selection on ribosomal function. A successful rDNA repeat will possess adaptations for spreading within tandem arrays by intranuclear selection. These adaptations reside in the non‐coding regions of (...) rDNA. Single‐copy genes are predicted to manage processes of intranuclear and cellular selection in the germline to maintain the quality of rRNA expressed in somatic cells of future generations. (shrink)

Cuando bioética y derecho hacen frente a un hard problem, el resultado suele ser la diversidad de posiciones doctrinales, la disparidad de soluciones entre los distintos sistemas jurídicos y, a nivel supranacional, la ausencia de regulación o la adopción de una extremadamente restrictiva. Tales diferencias pueden rastrearse hasta las tradiciones culturales de las que proceden. Este trabajo toma a la mejora genética germinal humana como un caso de cómo las diferencias entre las tradiciones culturales atlántica y mediterránea pueden obstaculizar (...) la consecución de un bioderecho internacional. Para la biocuestión elegida, las discrepancias se manifiestan en desiguales concepciones relativas a dos ejes temáticos: la naturaleza y el cuerpo humano. Tras su análisis, se proponen algunas líneas de acción encaminadas a la superación de dichas barreras y la obtención de un bioderecho común para la edición genética perfectiva de la línea germinal humana.
