  34. Talking Their Way Out of Relativism: Collingwood and Gentile on the Nature of Inquiry.James Wakefield - 2013 - Collingwood and British Idealism Studies 19 (2):139-168.
This article asks to what extent R.G. Collingwood's 'logic of question and answer' is compatible with the central tenets of Giovanni Gentile's 'actualism'. It is argued that, interpreted as an actualist device, Collingwood's 'logic' offers useful insights into the mechanisms underlying Gentile's theory. Both must confront what I call the 'Actualist Dilemma,' which holds that if there is no reality independent of actual thinking, truth becomes entirely relative to whatever beliefs a thinker happens to have, including those regarding the (...)

Expression of Emotion and Artistic Truth: R. G. Collingwood’s Debt to the Aesthetics of John Ruskin.Heta Häyry - 1994 - Idealistic Studies 24 (1):43-52.
In his book The Principles of Art Robin George Collingwood presents a theory of art as the expression of emotion. The connection between his view and the theories of the Italian neo-idealists Benedetto Croce and Giovanni Gentile is both well known and well documented. What seems to be less known, however, is the intellectual link R. G. Collingwood’s father, William Gershom Collingwood, formed between his son and John Ruskin, the great Victorian essayist, critic and reformer. There are some references (...)

Farewell to Jokes: The Last "Capricci" of Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo and the Tradition of Irony in Venetian Painting.Philipp P. Fehl - 1979 - Critical Inquiry 5 (4):761-791.
Capricci are nonsense drawings that delineate an elusive but inevitable sense behind or, better, within the palpable nonsense of the elementary proposition of a drawing; they are capers on a tightrope stretched between the poles of pathos and the ridiculous. We shall succeed in not falling only if we step forward boldly and know not only what we are doing but also what we are up against in the making of a picture as well as in living in the world. (...)

A Dispute Over Superposition: John Wallis, Honoré Fabri, and Giovanni Alfonso Borelli.Michael Elazar - 2013 - Annals of Science 70 (2):175-195.
This paper aims first and foremost to unravel and clarify an interesting 17th century controversy around superposition in projectiles, which allegedly existed between the French Jesuit Honoré Fabri and the Italian physicist and astronomer Giovanni Alfonso Borelli. This conflict ? initially described by the English mathematician John Wallis in a letter from 1670 to the secretary of the Royal Society ? has been erroneously identified with Fabri's Dialogi physici (1669), a work written in response to Borelli's De vi percussionis (...)

Giovanni Pico Della Mirandola, Über Das Seiende Und Das Eine. De Ente Et Uno.Paul Richard Blum, Gregor Damschen, Dominic Kaegi, Martin Mulsow, Enno Rudolph & Alejandro G. Vigo - 2006 - Hamburg: Meiner.
This edition of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola’s “De ente et uno” (“On being and the one”) offers for the first time a key text for the reformation of metaphysics in Renaissance philosophy in German translation. The Latin text is added. The detailed introduction and careful commentary reveal the guiding points Pico has set with this work.
