Das Buch wendet sich sowohl an den interessierten Hörer klassischer Musik wie auch an den für kulturphilosophische Fragen offenen Leser.?Gedanken zur Musikästhetik? behandelt das Thema aus philosophischer Sicht durch die grossen Denker des Abendlandes von Platon bis Adorno. Dabei wurde die Frage nach der Wirkung der Musik auf den Menschen, ihren besonderen Erscheinungsformen, vor allem was das Schöne anlangt, sowie nach den Bedingungen für ein ästhetisches Erleben in der Geschichte der Philosophie auf unterschiedliche Weise gestellt. Das Phänomen der inneren Berührung (...) durch Kunst stellt sich dabei auch im Spannungsfeld der Subjekt-Objektbeziehung dar. Der Autor präsentiert in überzeugender Weise die wesentlichsten Positionen und hinterfragt diese sowohl philosophisch als auch musiktheoretisch fundiert. Somit steht er auch dem Gegenstand der Untersuchung wie auch der hier angewendeten Methode in gleicher Weise nahe. Bewusst wird hierbei eine Sprache gewählt, die auch das Interesse des Autors an der Vermittlung dieses durchaus kontroversen und schwierigen Inhaltes beweist. So ergibt sich für den Leser gleichermassen auch eine Reise durch die Geschichte der Philosophie, wobei am Anfang und als Ausgangspunkt der Überlegungen der noch viel weiter gesteckte Musikbegriff in der griechischen Antike steht. Im 20. Jahrhundert bildet dann Theodor Adorno mit seiner Analyse einer für ihn möglichen Musik der Moderne und in besonderer Weise der kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit der 12-Tontechnik Arnold Schönbergs den Schlusspunkt des Werks. Polarisierende Auffassungen etwa Schopenhauers, der die Musik als allen anderen Kunstgattungen überlegen definiert oder Friedrich Nietzsches, welcher ein Gegensatzpaar Apollinisch-Dionysisch zu postulieren versucht, zeigen die divergierenden Positionen auch im Rahmen einer philosophischen Betrachtung, die sich neben verschiedenen anderen auch empirischen Methoden, mit diesem Problemkreis eingehend auseinandergesetzt hat. Zeno’s arrow does not move “in the now” (Phys. VI 8, 239b2) or, equivalently, “in the place it is” (DK 29 B 4). Zeno concludes from this that the arrow does not move at all. In Aristotle (ibid. 9, 239b5–9, 31–33), Zeno’s argument takes the form of an invalid inference from instants to periods of time. Insofar as it fails to bring out an inconsistency in Aristotle’s account of motion, the paradox is thus eliminated. That instantaneous motion is a contradiction (...) in terms belongs to the common ground Aristotle shares with Zeno. That’s why information concerning Zeno’s relevant argument must be sought elsewhere (see section 3). Aristotle’s discussion of the Arrow pertains to the conclusions drawn from the denial of instantaneous motion. But the argument he refutes is of his own making, or so I will argue (section 2). In particular, Aristotle fails to address the presentist commitment adumbrated in his account, which would leave nothing beyond the denial of instantaneous motion for Zeno to prove. Presentism is no option in Phys. VI where a tenseless account of time and motion is offered. I will argue that Aristotle’s account of the tenses in De interpretatione is prone to Zeno’s argument if the present is conceived as an instant – which it arguably is not (section 4). (shrink)

In General Inquiries on the Analysis of Notions and Truths, Leibniz articulates for the first time his favourite solution to the problem of contingency and displays the main features of his logical calculus. Leibniz composed the work in 1686, the same year in which he began to correspond with Arnauld and wrote the Discourse on Metaphysics. General Inquiries supplements these contemporary entries in Leibniz's philosophical oeuvre and demonstrates the intimate connection that links Leibniz's philosophy with the attempt to create a (...) new kind of logic. This edition presents the text and translation of the General Inquiries along with an introduction and commentary. Given the composite structure of the text, where logic and metaphysics strongly intertwine, Mugnai's introduction falls into two sections, respectively dedicated to logic and metaphysics. The first section ('Logic') begins with a preliminary account of Leibniz's project for a universal characteristic and focuses on the relationships between rational grammar and logic, and discusses the general structure and the main ingredients of Leibniz's logical calculus. The second section ('Metaphysics') is centred on the problem of contingency, which occupied Leibniz until the end of his life. The Discourse on Metaphysics is one of Leibniz's fundamental works. Written around January 1686, it is the most accomplished systematic expression of Leibniz's philosophy in the 1680s, the period in which Leibniz's philosophy reached maturity. Animals are hand-raised in a variety of contexts, including experimental research. This has been criticized frequently as producing animals with species-untypical behaviour. Here we compare life histories of 330 hand-raised and 631 gooseraised Greylag geese from a free-flying flock to determine whether hand-raising affected life history, reproductive variables and behaviour. We found little differences in life histories or reproductive variables of hand-raised and goose-raised geese. However, hand-raised females had lower life expectancies than goose-raised ones, mainly due to predation during breeding. (...) Hand-raised geese were stressed significantly less during social, handling and predator stress, were attacked less by conspecifics and were less vigilant than goose-raised geese. We conclude that hand-raising resulted in geese with species-typical life histories but reduced stress responses. This makes hand-raised geese cooperative partners for research, but also more vulnerable when exposed to predators. Die Generales Inquisitiones von 1686 stellen die wichtigste geschlossene Arbeit Leibniz' zu Fragen der Logik dar. Wie in dem ebenfalls 1686 verfaßten Discours de Métaphysique (PhB 260) wird hier Leibniz' Auffassung deutlich, in seinem Denken eine gewisse systematische Geschlossenheit gefunden zu haben.

The comparator-model, originally developed to explain motor action, has recently been invoked to explain several aspects of the self. However, in the first place it may not be used to explain a basic self-world distinction because it presupposes one. Our alternative account is based on specific systematic covariation between action and perception. Secondly, the comparator model cannot explain the feeling of ownership of thoughts. We argue—contra Frith and Campbell—that thoughts are not motor processes and therefore cannot be described by the (...) comparator-model. Rather, thoughts can be the triggering cause (intention) for actions. An alternative framework for the explanation of thought insertion in schizophrenics is presented. (shrink)
