Veiligheid anders bekeken : Een evaluatie van het probleemgebied « sociale verdediging ».Gustaaf Geeraerts - 1987 - Res Publica 29 (4):575-600.
Although relatively much has been said and written already on civilian based defence, one hardly can deny that there has been not much of an increase in our understanding of this particular alternative security concept. Hence, in the present article an attempt is made to trace the factors, which are to be held responsible for this rather striking case of theoretical stagnation. The main argument boils down to the assertion that, up till now, to much energy has been invested in (...)

The Hero, the White Savior, and the Smuggler: Criminalized Figures in the Landscape of Solidarity Toward Migrants.Jérémy Geeraert - 2024 - Studies in Social Justice 18 (2):304-322.
One recent shift in the ever-expanding crackdown on migration and implementation of a hostile environment for migrants in the EU has been the criminalization of migrant solidarity. Using various legal tools, EU governments have been trying to hinder solidarity actions from civil society. In particular, a narrative depicting civilians helping migrants as criminals has been elaborated by European organizations and strengthened by far-right groups and dominant press outlets. In reaction, a counter-narrative has been constructed and spread by pro-migrant groups and (...)

Francis Bacon "twittert": de nieuwe academie.Gustaaf C. Cornelis - 2015 - Antwerpen: Garant.

Progress and its problems in the study of war.Gustaaf Geeraerst - 1991 - Res Publica 33 (2):327-343.
Although the knowledge of war and international conflict has definitely increased, we do not as yet have much insight into why and how wars come about, and especially how war as a certain and comparably rare form of conflict regulation is connected to conflict behavior at lower levels of intensity as military disputes and international conflict behavior in general. Theoretical progress in the study of war demands a significant effort at the level of basic research. It is imperative to spend (...)

Metadebates on science: the blue book of 'Einstein meets Magritte'.Gustaaf C. Cornelis, Sonja Smets & Jean Paul van Bendegem (eds.) - 1999 - Boston: Kluwer Academic.
How do scientists approach science? Scientists, sociologists and philosophers were asked to write on this intriguing problem and to display their results at the International Congress `Einstein Meets Magritte'. The outcome of their effort can be found in this rather unique book, presenting all kinds of different views on science. Quantum mechanics is a discipline which deserves and receives special attention in this book, mainly because it is fascinating and, hence, appeals to the general public. This book not only contains (...)

Concept characteristics and variation in lexical diversity in two Dutch dialect areas.Karlien Franco, Dirk Geeraerts, Dirk Speelman & Roeland Van Hout - 2019 - Cognitive Linguistics 30 (1):205-242.
Lexical diversity, the amount of lexical variation shown by a particular concept, varies between concepts. For the conceptdrunk, for instance, nearly 3000 English expressions exist, includingblitzed, intoxicated, andhammered. For the conceptsober, however, a significantly smaller number of lexical items is available, likesoberorabstinent. While earlier variation studies have revealed that meaning-related concept characteristics correlate with the amount of lexical variation, these studies were limited in scope, being restricted to one semantic field and to one dialect area, that of the Limburgish dialects (...)

Diachronic prototype semantics: a contribution to historical lexicology.Dirk Geeraerts - 1997 - New York: Oxford University Press.
Prototype theory makes a crucial distinction between central and peripheral sense of words. Geeraerts explores the implications of this model for a theory of semantic change, in the first full-scale treatment of the impact of the most recent developments in lexicological theory on the study of meaning change. He identifies structural features of the development of word meanings which follow from a prototype-theoretical model of semantic structure, and incorporates these diachronic prototypicality effects into a theory of meaning change.

Idiom Variation: Experimental Data and a Blueprint of a Computational Model.Kristina Geeraert, John Newman & R. Harald Baayen - 2017 - Topics in Cognitive Science 9 (3):653-669.
Corpus surveys have shown that the exact forms with which idioms are realized are subject to variation. We report a rating experiment showing that such alternative realizations have varying degrees of acceptability. Idiom variation challenges processing theories associating idioms with fixed multi-word form units, fixed configurations of words, or fixed superlemmas, as they do not explain how it can be that speakers produce variant forms that listeners can still make sense of. A computational model simulating comprehension with naive discriminative learning (...)

    Introduction: Mare Liberum Revisited.Janne Nijman & Gustaaf van Nifterik - 2009 - Grotiana 30 (1):3-19.
This introduction gives a rough sketch of the context of Mare liberum's publication and the main arguments Grotius made in this pamphlet. It touches briefly on some of the latest arguments on Mare liberum and provides a survey of the contributions to this Commemmorative Issue. Moreover, it sets the stage for the contributions which elaborate on the fate of Grotian concepts - not so much by historically tracing these ideas over the past 400 years, but by offering an analysis of (...)
