1947 legt Hans Blumenberg aus Bargteheide in Holstein an der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel seine unter schwierigsten persönlichen Umständen entstandene Dissertation 'Beiträge zum Problem der Ursprünglichkeit der mittelalterlich-scholastischen Ontologie" vor. Hinter diesem Titel verbirgt sich eine mit ständigem Bezug auf die Philosophie Heideggers und seine "Fundamentalontologie' geführte Auseinandersetzung mit dem Denken des christlichen Mittelalters, in dem die Frage nach dem Grund des Seins eine so krisenhafte wie produktive Zuspitzung erfahren hatte. Die Dissertation wird von den Gutachtern Ludwig Landgrebe und Rudolf Schneider (...) mit "ausgezeichnet" bewertet, aber sämtliche Bemühungen, zeitnah einen Verlag für die Arbeit zu finden, scheitern. Blumenbergs brillantes Erstlingswerk blieb mehr als 70 Jahre ungedruckt. Nun wird es erstmals publiziert in einer leserorientierten Edition, die unter anderem Übersetzungen der zahlreichen altsprachlichen Zitate wie auch ein "Verzeichnis der Referenzliteratur" bietet, das die Lücke des im Original fehlenden Literaturverzeichnisses schliesst und dieses darüber hinaus durch heute zugängliche Ausgaben ergänzt. In "Moses the Egyptian"--the centerpiece of Rigorism of Truth, the German philosopher Hans Blumenberg addresses two defining figures in the intellectual history of the twentieth century: Sigmund Freud and Hannah Arendt. Unpublished during his lifetime, this essay analyzes Freud's Moses and Monotheism and Arendt's Eichmann in Jerusalem, and discovers in both a principled rigidity that turns into recklessness because it is blind to the politics of the unknown. An important work by 20-century philosopher Hans Blumenberg, here translated into English for the first time, The Laughter of the Thracian Woman describes the reception history of an anecdote best known from Plato's Theaetetus dialogue: while focused on observing the stars, the early astronomer and proto-philosopher Thales of Miletus fails to see a well directly in his path and tumbles down. A Thracian servant girl laughs, amused that he sought to understand what was above him when he was not mindful (...) of what was right in front of him. Blumenberg sees the story as a highly sought substitute for our missing knowledge of the earliest historical events that would fit the label "theory." By retelling the anecdote, philosophers reveal their distinctive values regarding absorption in curiosity, philosophy's past, and the demand that theorists abide by sanctioned methods and procedures. In this work and others, Blumenberg demonstrates that philosophers' most beloved images and anecdotes have become indispensable to philosophy as metaphors; that is, as representations whose meanings remain indefinite and invite frequent reinterpretation. Die Korrespondenz zwischen Hans Blumenberg und Jacob Taubes dokumentiert das inhaltsreiche und nicht ganz spannungsfreie Verhältnis zweier Intellektueller, wie sie unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnten: Auf der einen Seite Hans Blumenberg, der eines der eindrucksvollsten Gesamtwerke deutschsprachiger Philosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts geschaffen hat; auf der anderen Seite der Religionsphilosoph Jacob Taubes, der es wie kein Zweiter verstand, Intellektuelle unterschiedlichster Fachrichtungen miteinander ins Gespräch zu bringen. Der Briefwechsel setzt 1961 ein, als Taubes die Vertretung des Lehrstuhls für Judaistik am neu gegründeten Institut (...) für die Wissenschaft des Judentums an der Freien Universität Berlin übernahm, und endet 20 Jahre später wiederum mit einem Brief von Taubes aus Frankfurt, in dem er Blumenberg berichtet, er habe auf der Buchmesse dessen ”Die Lesbarkeit der Welt“ entdeckt. Dazwischen wird allerlei verhandelt: vor allem das Werk Blumenbergs, das in Taubes einen kongenialen Leser gefunden hat, aber auch die Situation an den Universitäten und die berühmte Forschungsgruppe ”Poetik und Hermeneutik“. Und natürlich geht es auch um Carl Schmitt und Gershom Scholem und nicht zuletzt um den Suhrkamp Verlag, insbesondere die neue Reihe ”Theorie“, zu deren Herausgebern Blumenberg und Taubes gehörten. Die 56 überlieferten Briefe werden nun zusammen mit weiteren Materialien zum ersten Mal kommentiert vorgelegt. Sie führen ins Zentrum der intellektuellen Debatten der 1960er und 1970er Jahre und sind ein wichtiges Stück Geistesgeschichte der alten Bundesrepublik aus der Perspektive zweier ihrer wichtigsten Vertreter. Renowned as the author of The Legitimacy of the Modern Age, Work on Myth, Paradigms for a Metaphorology and other major writings, the essay showcases Blumenberg’s unique approach to metaphorical figuration in the languages of philosophy and philosophers. Here Blumenberg considers how money stands as Simmel’s ‘proto-metaphor’ for Life in the latter’s nascent Lebensphilosophie. The (...) very phenomenon that might seem most opposed to Life and to ‘higher’ ‘spiritual’ values is also the phenomenon that most dynamically unlocks life’s plenitude of creative forms – even as it threatens constantly to destroy this plenitude through effects of reification and objectification. As Blumenberg reads Simmel, Life itself turns out to be pure circulation, sociation, and interactivity, an endless cycle of extensions and intensifications of value emerging through processes of social exchange. The essay forms a striking counterpart to the many seminal readings of Simmel in the German critical theory tradition from Benjamin, Kracauer, Adorno and Horkheimer to Habermas. (shrink)
