  5. Questions on Wittgenstein (Routledge Revivals).Rudolf Haller - 2014 - Routledge.
Wittgenstein, possibly the most influential philosopher of the twentieth century, is often labelled a Neopositivist, a New-Kantian, even a Sceptic. Questions on Wittgenstein , first published in 1988, presents a selection of nine essays investigating a matter of vital philosophical importance: Wittgenstein’s relationship to his Austrian predecessors and peers. The intention throughout is to determine the precise contours of Wittgenstein’s own thought by situating it within its formative context. Although it remains of particular interest to Anglo-Saxon philosophers, special familiarity with (...)

Value Added as Part of Sustainability Reporting: Reporting on Distributional Fairness or Obfuscation?Axel Haller, Chris J. van Staden & Cristina Landis - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 152 (3):763-781.
Distributional fairness of corporate distributions is an important social issue linked to accounting for equality. Value added and the information contained in the value added statement can conceptually be regarded as a reflection of how the company is managed for all stakeholders. We investigate value added information published in sustainability reports to determine if the information provided is useful for assessing distributional fairness between stakeholders. We find that the value added information disclosed lack conciseness, comparability and understandability. The divergence is (...)

The curriculum design, faculty characteristics, and experience of implementing masters' level international research ethics training programs supported by the Fogarty International Center was investigated. Multiple pedagogical approaches were employed to adapt to the learning needs of the trainees. While no generally agreed set of core competencies exists for advanced research ethics training, more than 75% of the curricula examined included international issues in research ethics, responsible conduct of research, human rights, philosophical foundations of research ethics, and research regulation and ethical (...)

The Role of Science in Public Policy: Higher Reason, or Reason for Hire? [REVIEW]Stephen F. Haller & James Gerrie - 2007 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 20 (2):139-165.
The traditional vision of the role science should play in policy making is of a two stage process of scientists first finding out the facts, and then policy makers making a decision about what to do about them. We argue that this two stage process is a fiction and that a distinction must be drawn between pure science and science in the service of public policy. When science is transferred into the policy realm, its claims to truth get undermined because (...)

    New Light on the Vienna Circle.Rudolf Haller - 1982 - The Monist 65 (1):25-37.
In the judgment of many historians of contemporary philosophy as well as of analytic philosophers of different lines, there is no doubt about the truth of the statement that the philosophy of the Vienna Circle is dead. And since it is dead, some think that the only remaining task could be to find out the cause that led to the downfall of this proud philosophical movement.

Values and Value Conflicts in Implementation and Use of Preconception Expanded Carrier Screening - an Expert Interview Study.Amal Matar, Mats G. Hansson & Anna T. Höglund - 2019 - BMC Medical Ethics 20 (1):25.
Endeavors have been made to found and incorporate ethical values in most aspects of healthcare, including health technology assessment. Health technologies and their assessment are value-laden and could trigger problems with dissemination if they contradict societal norms. Per WHO definition, preconception expanded carrier screening is a new health technology that warrants assessment. It is a genetic test offered to couples who have no known risk of recessive genetic diseases and are interested pregnancy. A test may screen for carrier status of (...)

This article tells the story of attempts to improve the regulation of lawyers in Victoria, Australia 1975-2012. It also tells the parallel story of one Victorian solicitor, Issac Brott, who was the subject of multiple complaints about his conduct during that same period of time but against whom professional discipline proved both ineffective and irrelevant.

    Quantum Gauge Equivalence in QED.K. Haller & E. Lim-Lombridas - 1994 - Foundations of Physics 24 (2):217-247.
We discuss gauge transformations in QED coupled to a charged spinor field, and examine whether we can gauge-transform the entire formulation of the theory from one gauge to another, so that not only the gauge and spinor fields, but also the forms of the operator-valued Hamiltonians are transformed. The discussion includes the covariant gauge, in which the gauge condition and Gauss's law are not primary constraints on operator-valued quantities; it also includes the Coulomb gauge, and the spatial axial gauge, in (...)

God, Value, and Nature by Fiona Ellis.Reese Haller - 2018 - American Journal of Theology and Philosophy 39 (2):71-73.
In God, Value, and Nature, Fiona Ellis dissects philosophical and theological positions on the metaphysics of our universe. Drawing on the works of John McDowell and Peter Railton, Ellis examines the dominant dichotomy between naturalism and supernaturalism among the perspectives of scientists, philosophers, and theologians. She challenges this metaphysical bifurcation, reframing the question of naturalism. Rather than asking what fits into the category of natural and what fits into the category of supernatural, the question should be, how should we understand (...)

    Private, Public, and Common Ownership.Markus Haller - 1998 - Analyse & Kritik 20 (2):166-183.
The idea that private ownership implies that owners are free to do with their things whatever they want is shown to be mistaken. It is argued that private, public and common ownership are all based on the right to alienate a thing, regard-less of the number of owners. Social or legal norms can make the ownership of a thing conditional on the participation in government or on group membership. In the former case, the norms establish public ownership, in the latter (...)

S-Matrix Elements for Gauge Theories with and Without Implemented Constraints.Kurt Haller - 1997 - Foundations of Physics 27 (2):305-313.
We derive an expression for the relation between two scattering transition amplitudes which, reflect the same dynamics, but which differ in the description of their initial and final state vectors. In one version, the incident and scattered states are elements of a perturbative Fock space, and solve the eigenvalue problem for the “free” pari of the Hamiltonian—the part that remains after the interactions between particle excitations have been “switched off”. Alternatively, the incident and scattered states may be coherent state that (...)

Jos.[Eph] Morgan and Mohamed Rabadan: The First Muslim Biography of the Prophet Muhammad in English.Nabil Matar - 2019 - Journal of Islamic Studies 30 (2):151-175.
By the time Joseph Morgan died, he had lived longer in, and written more about, North Africa than any other Briton. This paper examines his first published work after his return to England ca. 1720: a translation of the life of the Prophet Muḥammad which appeared in London in 1723 and 1725. While there had been previous biographies of the Prophet in English, Morgan’s was the first that was completely based on an account by a Muslim Andalusian author, Mohamed Rabadan, (...)

The Philosophy of Hugo Bergman and the Brentano School.Rudolf Haller - 1985 - Grazer Philosophische Studien 24:15-28.
The paper attempts to give an outline of the main doctrines of the Brentano-School and to mark the place of Bergman's contributions to descriptive Psychology. The idea of an immanent object is rejected by Marty and Bergman and was critized by Bergman in the framework of the 'concept-intuition'-distinction. It is shown that Bergman's critic leads to an interesting defense of the thesis of the privacy of mental contents.
