God in the Marketplace: A Reconsideration of Robert Watts as an Early Critic of J.S. Mill's Utilitarianism.Peter Johnson - 2006 - History of Political Thought 27 (3):487-504.
This article examines the arguments used by Robert Watts, a contemporary of John Stuart Mill, in his criticism of Mill's Utilitarianism. The pamphlet in which Watts expresses his views is a scarce and neglected work. Pioneering studies by J.C. Rees and J.B. Schneewind emphasize the importance of Mill's early critics for historians of nineteenth-century ethics and politial thought. Rees, however, confines his study to the responses to Mill's On Liberty. Schneewind's work is more comprehensive and does mention Watts, but without (...)

Dilemmas of 19th-Century Liberalism Among German Academic Chemists: Shaping a National Science Policy From Hofmann to Fischer, 1865–1919: Essay in Honour of Alan J. Rocke. [REVIEW]Jeffrey Allan Johnson - 2015 - Annals of Science 72 (2):224-241.
SummaryThis paper's primary goal is to compare the personalities, values, and influence of August Wilhelm Hofmann and Emil Fischer as exemplars and acknowledged leaders of successive generations of the German chemical profession and as scientists sharing a 19th-century liberal, internationalist outlook from the German wars of unification in the 1860s to Fischer's death in 1919 in the aftermath of German defeat in World War I. The paper will consider the influence of Hofmann and Fischer on the shaping of national scientific (...)

The Rise of Informal Logic: Essays on Argumentation, Critical Thinking, Reasoning and Politics.Ralph H. Johnson - unknown
We are pleased to release this edition of Ralph Johnson’s The Rise of Informal Logic as Volume 2 in the series Windsor Studies in Argumentation. This edition is a reprint of the previous Vale Press edition with some typographical errors and other minor mistakes corrected. The prime motive for gathering Ralph H. Johnson’s essays under one cover is their clear articulation of the goals, concerns and problems of the discipline of informal logic. To my knowledge all of the (...)

    Liberty and Nature: The Missing Link.Gregory R. Johnson - 1999 - Journal of Ayn Rand Studies 1 (1):135 - 166.
GREGORY R. JOHNSON examines the link between Ayn Rand's ethics, which can be broadly characterized as Aristotelian, and her political philosophy, which can be broadly characterized as classical liberalism of the Lockean, natural rights variety. He maintains that Rand's argument for classical liberalism on the basis of the objectivity of values fails because of a reductionistic and excessively intellectualistic conception of human nature. In addition to discussing Rand's arguments, he surveys the Rand-influenced work of Douglas B. Rasmussen and Douglas (...)
