    Imperfect Choice and Self-Stabilizing Rules: Ronald A. Heiner.Ronald A. Heiner - 1989 - Economics and Philosophy 5 (1):19-32.
A recent paper by David Levy focuses on “utility enhancing consumption constraints.” Levy concludes by noting that his analysis stays within standard utility maximizing theory, in contrast to my analysis of rule-governed behavior which allows imperfect decisions that don't always maximize utility. I wish to show how our two theories can be integrated, thereby representing complementary, rather than conflicting, explanations. In the process, I argue that imperfect decisions are an essential factor in the stability of any rule that constrains freedom (...)

The Cognitive Competences of Immigrant and Native Students Across the World: An Analysis of Gaps, Possible Causes and Impact.Heiner Rindermann & James Thompson - 2016 - Journal of Biosocial Science 48 (1):66-93.
SummaryImmigration, immigration policies and education of immigrants alter competence levels. This study analysed their effects using PISA, TIMSS and PIRLS data for natives' and immigrants' competences, competence gaps and their population proportions. The mean gap is equivalent to 4.71 IQ points. There are large differences across countries in these gaps ranging from around +12 to −10 IQ points. Migrants' proportions grow roughly 4% per decade. The largest immigrant-based ‘brain gains’ are observed for Arabian oil-based economies, and the largest ‘brain losses’ (...)

Cognitive Abilities of Emirati and German Engineering University Students.Heiner Rindermann, Antonia E. E. Baumeister & Anne Gröper - 2014 - Journal of Biosocial Science 46 (2):199-213.
SummaryAccording to human capital theory, individual competences and personality attributes are relevant for individual productivity and income. Within human capital, intelligence is crucial. To study engineering and work successfully as an engineer, high cognitive abilities are necessary, especially for work in research and development. In a study of 30 German and 30 Emirati engineering students, both groups were tested with mathematical and figural intelligence scales. German engineering students achieved a mean IQ of 116, and Emirati students 104. In both groups (...)

Symbolic Representation in Kant's Practical Philosophy.Heiner Bielefeldt - 2003 - Cambridge University Press.
This book is the first to explore in detail the role that symbolic representation plays in the architecture of Kant's philosophy. Symbolic representation fulfills a crucial function in Kant's practical philosophy because it serves to mediate between the unconditionality of the categorical imperative and the inescapable finiteness of the human being. By showing how the nature of symbolic representation plays out across all areas of the practical philosophy - moral philosophy, legal philosophy, philosophy of history and philosophy of religion - (...)

"A Star of the First Magnitude Within the Philosophical World": Introduction to Life and Work of Gustav Teichmüller.Heiner Schwenke - 2015 - Studia Philosophica Estonica 8 (2):1-24.
In 1871, the German philosopher Gustav Teichmüller (1832-1888) moved from his Basel chair to the much better paid chair in Tartu, and taught there until his untimely death. Besides philosophy, he had studied various disciplines, including the natural sciences. In the preparation of his own philosophy, he explored the history of philosophy for more than twenty years and made pioneering contributions to the history of concepts. Only by the early-1880s did he begin to elaborate his "new philosophy", an original version (...)

Der Grund der Verbindlichkeit. Mendelssohn und Kant über Evidenz in der Moralphilosophie.Heiner F. Klemme - 2018 - Kant-Studien 109 (2):286-308.
: The paper discusses the concepts of obligation and moral evidence in Mendelssohn’s and Kant’s prize essays. I argue that Mendelssohn departs in significant ways from Christian Wolff’s position, and that Kant intends to overcome Wolffian philosophy with Newtonian methodology while still owing a lot to Wolff and to the project of an ethics within the limits of metaphysics. Although quite akin to Francis Hutcheson’s philosophy, it becomes clear that Kant intended to lay the foundation of an innovative concept of (...)

Confucianism Between Tradition and Modernity, Religion, and Secularization: Questions to Tu Weiming.Heiner Roetz - 2008 - Dao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy 7 (4):367-380.
Weiming’s program of overcoming the enlightenment mentality and throws a critical light on his conceptions of religious or spiritual Confucianism, of a Confucian modernity, and of the multiple modernities theory in general. It defends a unitary rather than multiple concept of modernity in terms of the realization of a morally controlled principle of free subjectivity and tries to show how Confucianism, understood as a secular ethics, could contribute to this goal.

Feminism and the Carceral State: Gender-Responsive Justice, Community Accountability, and the Epistemology of Antiviolence.T. Heiner Brady & K. Tyson Sarah - 2017 - Feminist Philosophy Quarterly 3 (1):1-37.
Building on recent feminist scholarship on the complicity of feminist antiviolence movements in the build-up of mass incarceration, this essay analyzes the epistemic occupation of feminist antiviolence work by carceral logic, taking the Gender-Responsive Justice and Community Accountability movements as countervailing examples. Both strategies claim to be a feminist response to violence. Gender-Responsive Justice arises from feminist criminology and has genealogical roots in the American prison reformatory movement. Community Accountability stems from grassroots intersectional and decolonial feminisms that are fundamentally at (...)

More than 95 per cent of criminal convictions in the USA never go to trial, as the vast majority of defendants forfeit their constitutional rights to due process in the pervasive practice of plea bargaining. This article analyses the relationship between American mass incarceration and this mass forfeiture of procedural justice by situating the practice of plea bargaining in the normative framework drawn by recent Supreme Court rulings and the proliferation of criminal statutes, including mandatory minimum sentencing legislation. Looking at (...)

Is the Categorical Imperative the Highest Principle of Both Pure Practical and Theoretical Reason?Heiner F. Klemme - 2014 - Kantian Review 19 (1):119-126.
In her new book, Patricia Kitcher supports Onora O'Neill's view that the categorical imperative is the highest principle of both practical and theoretical reason. I claim that neither O'Neill's original interpretation nor Kitcher's additional evidence in favour of it are convincing. At its core, this misconception of Kant's position consists in the identification of self-referential critique of reason with the concept of autonomy. It will be shown that the (Kant) of both practical and theoretical reason is not the categorical imperative, (...)

“From the Prison of Slavery to the Slavery of Prison”: Angela Y. Davis’s Abolition Democracy.Brady Thomas Heiner - 2007 - Radical Philosophy Today 5:219-227.
One of the most radical dimensions of Davis’s critique of American democracy is her exposure of the vestiges of slavery that remain in the contemporary criminal justice system. I discuss this aspect of her critical project, its roots in Du Bois’s critique of Black Reconstruction, and the way that it informs her prison abolitionism and her two-pronged program for the formation of a genuine “abolition democracy.” I conclude by reflecting upon Davis’s reticence about abolition as a constructive enterprise and assessing (...)

    Kant und die Paradoxien der Kritischen Philosophie.Heiner F. Klemme - 2007 - Kant-Studien 98 (1):40-56.

The open society together with a pluralistic public sphere is a cornerstone of modernity and a necessary element of democracy. However, it has been maintained that the possibility of such a society depends on liberal convictions that are not applicable to non-Western cultures and also contradict the Confucian value orientation. The article argues that such an assumption is based on a number of problematic premises. There is no one-sided dependence of the socio-political system on culture, and the contemporary Chinese society (...)
