The Natural Sciences and the Development of Animal Morphology in Late-Victorian Cambridge.Helen J. Blackman - 2007 - Journal of the History of Biology 40 (1):71 - 108.
During the 1870s animal morphologists and embryologists at Cambridge University came to dominate British zoology, quickly establishing an international reputation. Earlier accounts of the Cambridge school have portrayed this success as short-lived, and attributed the school's failure to a more general movement within the life sciences away from museum-based description, towards laboratory-based experiment. More recent work has shown that the shift in the life sciences to experimental work was locally contingent and highly varied, often drawing on and incorporating aspects of (...)

    What is Different About Socially Responsible Funds? A Holdings-Based Analysis.Jacquelyn E. Humphrey, Geoffrey J. Warren & Junyan Boon - 2016 - Journal of Business Ethics 138 (2):263-277.
We provide a comprehensive analysis of differences between socially responsible investment and conventional funds in terms of manager characteristics, performance and fund styles. We use holdings-based analysis to evaluate fund performance and style, which allows us to perform a more in-depth analysis than the extant literature. We find that SRI managers have longer tenure and are more likely to be a female. However, these differences do not result in any significant difference in the performance of SRI and conventional funds. Further, (...)

This paper explores the early formation of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship and its recent efforts to recreate itself. Originally envisioned as a network of local BPF chapters undertaking peacemaking and ecological projects at the regional level, it has become a web-based network of like-minded individuals connecting online. The founders published a mimeographed newsletter with inspirational translations of historical teachers and information regarding peacemaking efforts and descriptions of Asian Buddhists suffering from violence to discrimination. While the basic mission remains unchanged, current (...)

Adaptation and Validation of a Test of Ethical Sensitivity in Teaching.Bruce Maxwell, Helen Boon, Nicolas Tanchuk & Bryan Rauwerda - 2021 - Journal of Moral Education 50 (3):267-292.
ABSTRACT This article documents the adaptation, piloting and validation of a measure of teachers’ ethical sensitivity. To create the test, we modified a measure from dentistry drawing on literature in teacher professional ethics and drew on the expertise of professional ethics scholars and practitioners. Based on the results of Rasch analysis combined with traditional approaches to psychometric validation, the instrument was found to be a valid and reliable means of discerning levels of ethical sensitivity within the group of participants. However, (...)

Ethicality of Advisor Motives in Academic Advising: Faculty, Staff, and Student Perspectives.Xiafei Xue Kohlfeld, David J. Lutz & Austin T. Boon - 2020 - Journal of Academic Ethics 18 (3):333-346.
Although the advising literature has emphasized the importance of good academic advising, there has been little emphasis on ethical issues. NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising provides Core Values to guide ethical behavior. This study used an experimental design to examine perspectives of ethical behavior among faculty, staff, and students. All groups could differentiate between ethical and unethical extremes, but students had difficulty differentiating between ethical and neutral behavior. All groups hesitated to rate advisors as highly ethical or unethical. (...)

  44. How Helen Keller Used Syntactic Semantics to Escape From a Chinese Room.William J. Rapaport - 2006 - Minds and Machines 16 (4):381-436.
A computer can come to understand natural language the same way Helen Keller did: by using “syntactic semantics”—a theory of how syntax can suffice for semantics, i.e., how semantics for natural language can be provided by means of computational symbol manipulation. This essay considers real-life approximations of Chinese Rooms, focusing on Helen Keller’s experiences growing up deaf and blind, locked in a sort of Chinese Room yet learning how to communicate with the outside world. Using the SNePS computational (...)

Anthropocentrism: More Than Just a Misunderstood Problem.Helen Kopnina, Haydn Washington, Bron Taylor & John J. Piccolo - 2018 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 31 (1):109-127.
Anthropocentrism, in its original connotation in environmental ethics, is the belief that value is human-centred and that all other beings are means to human ends. Environmentally -concerned authors have argued that anthropocentrism is ethically wrong and at the root of ecological crises. Some environmental ethicists argue, however, that critics of anthropocentrism are misguided or even misanthropic. They contend: first that criticism of anthropocentrism can be counterproductive and misleading by failing to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate human interests. Second, that humans (...)

Value Judgements and Conceptual Tensions: Decision-Making in Relation to Hospital Discharge for People with Dementia.Helen Greener, Marie Poole, Charlotte Emmett, John Bond, Stephen J. Louw & Julian C. Hughes - 2012 - Clinical Ethics 7 (4):166-174.
We reflect, using a vignette, on conceptual tensions and the value judgements that lie behind difficult decisions about whether or not the older person with dementia should return home or move into long-term care following hospital admission. The paper seeks, first, to expose some of the difficulties arising from the assessment of residence capacity, particularly around the nature of evaluative judgements and conceptual tensions inherent in the legal approach to capacity. Secondly, we consider the assessment of best interests around place (...)

The Emergence of Religion in Human Evolution.Margaret Boone Rappaport & Christopher J. Corbally - 2020 - Abingdon, UK: Routledge.
Religious capacity is a highly elaborate, neurocognitive human trait that has a solid evolutionary foundation. This book uses a multidisciplinary approach to describe millions of years of biological innovations that eventually give rise to the modern trait and its varied expression in humanity’s many religions. The authors present a scientific model and a central thesis that the brain organs, networks, and capacities that allowed humans to survive physically also gave our species the ability to create theologies, find sustenance in religious (...)
