We construct a type p with preweight ω with respect to itself in a theory with few types. A type with this property must be present in a stable theory with finitely many (but more than one) countable models. The construction is a modification of Hrushovski's important pseudoplane construction.

    Risk, Precaution, Responsibility, and Equal Concern.Alexia Herwig & Marta Simoncini - 2017 - Ratio Juris 30 (3):259-272.
Systemic risks are risks produced through interconnected non-wrongful actions of individuals, in the sense that an individual's action is a negligible cause of the risk. Due to scale effects of interaction, their consequences can be serious but they are also difficult to predict and assess via a risk assessment. Since we can have good reason to engage in the interconnected activities giving rise to systemic risk, we incur a concurrent collective responsibility to ensure that the risks are fairly distributed and (...)

    On ℵ0-Categorical Weakly o-Minimal Structures.B. Herwig, H. D. Macpherson, G. Martin, A. Nurtazin & J. K. Truss - 1999 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 101 (1):65-93.
0-categorical o-minimal structures were completely described by Pillay and Steinhorn 565–592), and are essentially built up from copies of the rationals as an ordered set by ‘cutting and copying’. Here we investigate the possible structures which an 0-categorical weakly o-minimal set may carry, and find that there are some rather more interesting examples. We show that even here the possibilities are limited. We subdivide our study into the following principal cases: the structure is 1-indiscernible, in which case all possibilities are (...)

International Trade, Fairness, and Labour Migration.Alexia Herwig & Sylvie Loriaux - 2014 - Moral Philosophy and Politics 1 (2):289-313.
This paper aims to show that fairness in trade calls for relaxing existing WTO rules to include a greater liberalisation of labour migration. After having addressed several objections to global egalitarianism, it will argue, first, that the world’s rich and the world’s poor participate in a same multilateral trading system whose point is primarily to reduce trade barriers, and hence to establish global economic competitions, in order to raise their standards of living; second, that these competitions are subject to requirements (...)

Stable Theories Without Dense Forking Chains.Bernhard Herwig, James G. Loveys, Anand Pillay, Predag Tanović & O. Wagner - 1992 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 31 (5):297-303.
We define a generalized notion of rank for stable theories without dense forking chains, and use it to derive that every type is domination-equivalent to a finite product of regular types. We apply this to show that in a small theory admitting finite coding, no realisation of a nonforking extension of some strong type can be algebraic over some realisation of a forking extension.

Finite Conformal Hypergraph Covers and Gaifman Cliques in Finite Structures.Ian Hodkinson & Martin Otto - 2003 - Bulletin of Symbolic Logic 9 (3):387-405.
We provide a canonical construction of conformal covers for finite hypergraphs and present two immediate applications to the finite model theory of relational structures. In the setting of relational structures, conformal covers serve to construct guarded bisimilar companion structures that avoid all incidental Gaifman cliques-thus serving as a partial analogue in finite model theory for the usually infinite guarded unravellings. In hypergraph theoretic terms, we show that every finite hypergraph admits a bisimilar cover by a finite conformal hypergraph. In terms (...)

Coherent Extension of Partial Automorphisms, Free Amalgamation and Automorphism Groups.Daoud Siniora & Sławomir Solecki - forthcoming - Journal of Symbolic Logic:1-25.
We give strengthened versions of the Herwig–Lascar and Hodkinson–Otto extension theorems for partial automorphisms of finite structures. Such strengthenings yield several combinatorial and group-theoretic consequences for homogeneous structures. For instance, we establish a coherent form of the extension property for partial automorphisms for certain Fraïssé classes. We deduce from these results that the isometry group of the rational Urysohn space, the automorphism group of the Fraïssé limit of any Fraïssé class that is the class of all ${\cal F}$ -free (...)

Finite Algebras of Relations Are Representable on Finite Sets.H. Andréka, I. Hodkinson & I. Németi - 1999 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 64 (1):243-267.
Using a combinatorial theorem of Herwig on extending partial isomorphisms of relational structures, we give a simple proof that certain classes of algebras, including Crs, polyadic Crs, and WA, have the `finite base property' and have decidable universal theories, and that any finite algebra in each class is representable on a finite set.

The Choice Architecture of Sustainable and Responsible Investment: Nudging Investors Toward Ethical Decision-Making.Herwig Pilaj - 2017 - Journal of Business Ethics 140 (4):743-753.
This paper applies insights from behavioral economics and nudge theory to foster sustainable and responsible investment. SRI provides an opportunity to express and promote ethical values via choice of financial instruments. While policy-makers have tried to encourage greater participation in SRI, the majority of retail investors retain a conventional approach to investment. I develop a conceptual framework to improve the effectiveness of SRI policy-making. The first part of the framework comprises a transmission mechanism which emphasizes the role of SRI as (...)

The aim of this paper is to give a new proof for the decidability and finite model property of first-order logic with two variables (without function symbols), using a combinatorial theorem due to Herwig. The results are proved in the framework of polyadic equality set algebras of dimension two (Pse 2 ). The new proof also shows the known results that the universal theory of Pse 2 is decidable and that every finite Pse 2 can be represented on a (...)
