Das klassische chinesische Philosophieverständnis wird immer wieder als ein lebenspraktisches beschrieben. Statt die Grundstrukturen und die ersten Ursachen des Wirklichen theoretisch zu erkunden, ziele die antike chinesische Philosophie vor allem darauf, den Menschen auf Wege hin zu einer reibungslosen Einfügung in den Lauf der Dinge aufmerksam zu machen. Die vorliegende Arbeit überprüft dieses Vorverständnis und diskutiert, inwieweit die einschlägigen Texte, u.a. von Konfuzius, Meng Zi, Mo Zi und Lao Zi, dem ihnen zugeschriebenen lebenspraktischen Anspruch gerecht werden.

On the occasion of the 150th birthday of Georg Cantor (1845–1918), the founder of the theory of sets, the development of the logical foundations of this theory is described as a sequence of catastrophes and of trials to save it. Presently, most mathematicians agree that the set theory exactly defines the subject of mathematics, i.e., any subject is a mathematical one if it may be defined in the language (i.e., in the notions) of set theory. Hence the nature of formal (...) definitions plays an important role within the logical foundations of mathematics. Its study is also helpful to answer the question of how it is possible that the set theory as a universal new ontology for the subject of mathematics (as people hoped around 1900) totally failed but nevertheless the language of set theory is successful in all the mathematical practice. ‘Eine weite Wohnung unter freiem Himmel’? On the Aesthetics of Gardens of the Senses Although the common experience of nature and gardens engages all the senses, historical analysis of garden theory shows a clear tendency to reduce green spaces to their imagery and to take the visual arts as the model for garden design. A counter-tendency to this primacy of vision has, however, lately emerged -- namely, gardens of the senses or healing gardens, which accentuate also the tactile and (...) olfactory qualities of vegetation and materials. The literature on gardens of the senses provides useful empirical guidelines for garden designers, but on a rather eclectic theoretical basis that applies mainly to private jardins de plaisir. Nevertheless, the accentuation of tactile and olfactory qualities in gardens constitutes a source of well-being, and contributes to a deceleration of life, a positive experience of the natural order and rhythm, and the habitability of a place. Moreover, they are informal laboratories for the education of the senses, and their empirical taxonomies may be integrated into an aesthetic theory of sensory design. (shrink)
