When CEO Career Horizon Problems Matter for Corporate Social Responsibility: The Moderating Roles of Industry-Level Discretion and Blockholder Ownership.Won-Yong Oh, Young Kyun Chang & Zheng Cheng - 2016 - Journal of Business Ethics 133 (2):279-291.
This paper examines the influence of CEO career horizon problems on corporate social responsibility. We assume that as CEOs are getting older, they tend to disengage in CSR due to their shorter career horizons. We further argue that high levels of industry-level discretion and blockholder ownership amplify the negative effects of CEO age on CSR. Using a panel sample of US-based firms over 2004–2009, we do not find the main effect of CEO age on CSR, but find support for the (...)

Tugging on Heartstrings: Shopping Orientation, Mindset, and Consumer Responses to Cause-Related Marketing.Chun-Tuan Chang & Zhao-Hong Cheng - 2015 - Journal of Business Ethics 127 (2):337-350.
Donating money to a charity based on consumer purchase is referred to as cause-related marketing . In this research, we profile consumer psychographics for skepticism toward advertising in a CRM context. To be specific, this study investigates whether and how psychological antecedents and gender differences influence consumer skepticism toward advertising. An empirical study was conducted with 291 participants. Structural equation modeling was employed for hypothesis testing. The results suggest that a utilitarian orientation and an individualistic mindset are positively related to (...)

Biomedical ontologies are emerging as critical tools in genomic and proteomic research where complex data in disparate resources need to be integrated. A number of ontologies exist that describe the properties that can be attributed to proteins; for example, protein functions are described by Gene Ontology, while human diseases are described by Disease Ontology. There is, however, a gap in the current set of ontologies—one that describes the protein entities themselves and their relationships. We have designed a PRotein Ontology (PRO) (...)

The Effects of Managers' Moral Philosophy on Project Decision Under Agency Problem Conditions.Cheng-Li Huang & Bao-Guang Chang - 2010 - Journal of Business Ethics 94 (4):595 - 611.
This study derives an improved model of managers' decision-making behavior regarding possibly failing projects. Instead of adopting cognitive moral development used by Rutledge and Karim (Accounting, Organization and Society 24, 173-184, 1999) this investigation uses the agency theory framework to consider individual moral philosophy for the improvement of decisions regarding possibly failing projects. This research hypothesizes that a manager with low relativism has a stronger tendency to discontinue a possibly failing project than one with high relativism when agency problem are (...)

Stress Perturbations Around the Deep Salt Structure of Kuqa Depression in the Tarim Basin.Mingwen Wang, Yunqiang Sun, Gang Luo, Rui Zhang & Cheng Chang - 2019 - Interpretation 7 (3):T647-T656.
Drilling into and around salt bodies can present different kinds of geohazards, such as shrinkage or stuck and crushed casings, resulting in well abandonment and huge economic losses. These engineering disasters are more likely to happen when ignoring the stress perturbations caused by the geomechanical interactions between the salt and surrounding sediments. For a better understanding of the stress perturbations, we use a commercial finite-element software, Abaqus, to build a 2D plane-strain finite-element model of the salt structure of Kuqa depression (...)

    Rectifying Names [Cheng-Ming] in Classical Confucianism.Chung-Ying Cheng - 1977 - Chinese Studies in Philosophy 8 (3):67.
The concept of rectifying names [cheng-ming] is a familiar one in the Confucian Analects. It occupies an important, if not central, position in the political philosophy of Confucius. Since, according to Confucius, the rectification of names is the basis of the establishment of social harmony and political order, one might suspect that later political theories of Confucian-ists should be traced back to the Confucian doctrine of rectifying names. It need not be added that the theory of rectifying names, as developed (...)

The Spirit of the School of Principles in Zhu Xi’s Discussion of “Dreams”—And on “Confucius Did Not Dream of Duke Zhou”.Yu Chang - 2010 - Frontiers of Philosophy in China 5 (1):94-110.
Dreams were a topic of study even in ancient times, and they are a special spiritual phenomenon. Generations of literati have defined the meaning of dreams in their own way, while Zhu Xi was perhaps the most outstanding one among them. He made profound explanations of dreams from aspects such as the relationship between dreams and the principles li and qi, the relationship between dreams and the state of the heart, and the relationship between dreams and an individual’s moral improvement. The most significant article in this issue is the one in criticism of Chang Tai-nien's reflections on some characteristics of classical Chinese philosophy. The four younger Marxist philosophy workers in Commuist China, Hsiao Chieh-fu, Chu Po-kung, T'ang I-chieh, and Lu Yü-san, have sharply denounced Chang's interpretation of Chinese philosophy, which attempts to present some universal elements in Chinese classical thinking. The rejection is made in the name of orthodox Marxism-Leninism, and what is rejected is called anti-Marxist revisionism. This (...)

Inventing Temperature: Measurement and Scientific Progress.Hasok Chang - 2004 - Oup Usa.
In Inventing Temperature, Chang takes a historical and philosophical approach to examine how scientists were able to use scientific method to test the reliability of thermometers; how they measured temperature beyond the reach of thermometers; and how they came to measure the reliability and accuracy of these instruments without a circular reliance on the instruments themselves. Chang discusses simple epistemic and technical questions about these instruments, which in turn lead to more complex issues about the solutions that were (...)

The Hwa Yen school of Mahāyāna Buddhism bloomed in China in the 7th and 8th centuries A.D. Today many scholars regard its doctrines of Emptiness, Totality, and Mind-Only as the crown of Buddhist thought and as a useful and unique philosophical system and explanation of man, world, and life as intuitively experienced in Zen practice. In virtue of what is something a reason for action? That is, what makes a consideration a reason to act? This is a metaphysical or meta-normative question about the grounding of reasons for action. The answer to the grounding question has been traditionally given in ‘pure’, univocal terms. This paper argues that there is good reason to understand the ground of practical normativity as a hybrid of traditional ‘pure’ views. The paper 1) surveys the three leading ‘pure’ answers to the (...)

The paper explores the influence of greenwash on green trust and discusses the mediation roles of green consumer confusion and green perceived risk. The research object of this study focuses on Taiwanese consumers who have the purchase experience of information and electronics products in Taiwan. This research employs an empirical study by means of the structural equation modeling. The results show that greenwash is negatively related to green trust. Therefore, this study suggests that companies must reduce their greenwash behaviors to (...)
