Social and Symbolic Capital and Responsible Entrepreneurship: An Empirical Investigation of SME Narratives.Ted Fuller & Yumiao Tian - 2006 - Journal of Business Ethics 67 (3):287-304.
This paper investigates links between social capital and symbolic capital and responsible entrepreneurship in the context of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The source of the primary data was 144 ‘Business Profiles’, written by the owner-managers of small businesses in application for a Small Business Awards competition in 2005. Included in each of these narratives were claims relating to the firms’ contributions to wider society, relationships with customers, employees and stakeholders. These narratives were coded and classified in a framework drawn (...)

The Effects of Ethical Pressure and Power Distance Orientation on Unethical Pro‐Organizational Behavior: The Case of Earnings Management.Qing Tian & Dane K. Peterson - 2016 - Business Ethics: A European Review 25 (2):159-171.
A multiphase study tested a proposed mediated moderation model for the joint effects of ethical pressure and power distance orientation on accountants’ ethical judgments of earnings management. Results based on a sample of 354 accountants from China indicated that the relationship between ethical pressure and ethical judgments of earnings management is contingent on the accountants’ power distance orientation. That is, the relationship between ethical pressure and ethical judgments of earnings management was stronger for accountants with a high power distance orientation. (...)

How and When Does Perceived CSR Affect Employees’ Engagement in Voluntary Pro-Environmental Behavior?Qing Tian & Jennifer L. Robertson - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 155 (2):399-412.
Scholarly interest in employees’ voluntary pro-environmental behavior has begun to emerge. While this research is beginning to shed light on the predictors of workplace pro-environmental behavior, our understanding of the psychological mechanisms linking the various antecedents to employees’ environmentally responsible behavior and the circumstances under which any such effects are enhanced and/or attenuated is incomplete. The current study seeks to fill this gap by examining: the effects of perceived corporate social responsibility on employees’ voluntary pro-environment behavior; an underlying mechanism that (...)

Consumer Responses to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in China.Zhilong Tian, Rui Wang & Wen Yang - 2011 - Journal of Business Ethics 101 (2):197-212.
This research explores how consumers respond to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in China with a multiproduct, comparative survey. Empirical results conclude that (1) Chinese consumers, who show a high level of awareness and trust of CSR, are more likely to transform a good CSR record into positive corporate evaluation, product association, and purchase intention; (2) Consumer responses to CSR vary across different product categories. Those firms selling experience products (vs. search and credence products) are more likely to gain consumers' positive (...)

Perception of Business Bribery in China: The Impact of Moral Philosophy.Qing Tian - 2008 - Journal of Business Ethics 80 (3):437-445.
This paper examines the impact of Chinese business managers’ moral philosophies on the perception of corrupt payments such as bribery, kickbacks and gift giving. Business managers from Mainland China were selected as target respondents. As hypothesized the survey results generally indicate that moral relativism is a significant predictor of Chinese business managers’ favorable perception of bribery and kickbacks. In examining the attitude toward gift giving, the survey showed that an individual’s attitude toward gift giving was neither affected by their moral (...)

For the Good or the Bad? Interactive Effects of Transformational Leadership with Moral and Authoritarian Leadership Behaviors.Sebastian C. Schuh, Xin-an Zhang & Peng Tian - 2013 - Journal of Business Ethics 116 (3):629-640.
Although the ethical aspects of transformational leadership have attracted considerable attention, very little is known about followers’ reactions to the moral and immoral conduct of transformational leaders. Against this background, this study examined whether and how transformational leadership interacts with moral and authoritarian leadership behaviors in predicting followers’ in-role and extra-role efforts. Building on attribution theory, we hypothesized that the positive and negative effects of these leadership behaviors would be particularly pronounced for highly transformational leaders given that this leadership style (...)

Two-Parameter Prestack Seismic Inversion of Porosity and Pore-Structure Parameter of Fractured Carbonate Reservoirs: Part 2 — Applications.Tingting Zhang, Ruifeng Zhang, Jianzhang Tian, Lifei Lu, Fengqi Qin, Xianzeng Zhao & Yuefeng Sun - 2018 - Interpretation: SEG 6 (4):SM9-SM17.
Fractures and fracture-related dissolution pores, as well as cavities, molds, and vugs, provide the major conduit and/or storage space for hydrocarbons in the deeply buried carbonate hill of Hexiwu field, Bohai Bay Basin. The fractured reservoir generally has lower porosity but better permeability than moldic/vuggy reservoir, and it consists of the major part of the buried-hill slope and buried-hill internal reservoirs. The conventional method of characterizing carbonate reservoirs, however, often mixes these two types of reservoirs together because they both have (...)

Understanding the neural basis of schizophrenia (SZ) is important for shedding light on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying this mental disorder. Structural and functional alterations in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), hippocampus, and medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) have been implicated in the neurobiology of SZ. However, the effective connectivity among them in SZ remains unclear. The current study investigated how neuronal pathways involving these regions were affected in first-episode SZ using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Forty-nine patients (...)

This study examines the impact of chief executive officer ability on firms’ corporate social responsibility performance. We find that firms’ CSR performance increases with CEO ability. Specifically, firms with more able CEOs are associated with more socially responsible activities and fewer socially irresponsible activities, and are associated with more stakeholder CSR rather than third-party CSR. We further find that the positive relation between CEO ability and CSR is weakened for CEO who is also the chair of the board and for (...)

Since the 16th National Congress of Communist Party of China (16th NCCPC) in 2002, more and more private entrepreneurs have appeared on the political arena in China. The article first describes the state of the phenomenon, and analyzes the reasons and the related ethical issues of private entrepreneurs participating in politics. For this purpose, the article begins by suggesting a framework of analyzing the ethical analysis of corporate political actions, then applies it to a case study of the phenomenon, and (...)

Can Customer Loyalty Be Explained by Virtue Ethics? The Chinese Way.Kenneth K. Kwong, Felix Tang, Vane-ing Tian & Alex L. K. Fung - 2015 - Asian Journal of Business Ethics 4 (1):101-115.
Virtue ethics is regarded as the key in search of moral excellence among corporations. Yet, there are limited works to empirically investigate what virtuous character morally good corporations is expected to exhibit in the course of business from the perspective of customers. To fill this gap, we argue that customers are to evaluate firm’s virtuous character using Confucian cardinal virtues and perceived virtuousness determines customer loyalty. We test this argument using a sample of 276 Hong Kong Chinese. The result suggests (...)

A Novel Approach to the Quantitative Evaluation of the Mineral Composition, Porosity, and Kerogen Content of Shale Using Conventional Logs: A Case Study of the Damintun Sag in the Bohai Bay Basin, China.Jinbu Li, Shuangfang Lu, Min Wang, Guohui Chen, Weichao Tian & Chenxue Jiao - 2019 - Interpretation: SEG 7 (1):T83-T95.
The quantitative prediction of the mineral composition, porosity, and kerogen content of shales is significant for the evaluation of shale oil and gas potential and the hydraulic fracturing process. We have developed a new method for the shale’s components prediction by combining the back-propagation neural network and an improved [Formula: see text] method based on conventional logs. First, we constructed and calibrated the shale fraction model according to the volume of the minerals, kerogen, and porosity determined through laboratory analyses. Subsequently, (...)

Why Chinese culture has turned to the use of cow’s milk needs to be reexamined. The reason given to the Chinese people is that the drinking of milk is scientifically supported. However, the actual drinking of cow’s milk has been and continues to be problematic for Chinese people since many have lactose intolerance. This problem leads to the larger question of why one might trust science for the answer all issues, especially when science is often working for corporate interests and (...)

Bifurcation Analysis of Three-Strategy Imitative Dynamics with Mutations.Wenjun Hu, Haiyan Tian & Gang Zhang - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-8.
Evolutionary game dynamics is an important research, which is widely used in many fields such as social networks, biological systems, and cooperative behaviors. This paper focuses on the Hopf bifurcation in imitative dynamics of three strategies with mutations. First, we verify that there is a Hopf bifurcation in the imitative dynamics with no mutation. Then, we find that there is a critical value of mutation such that the system tends to an unstable limit cycle created in a subcritical Hopf bifurcation. (...)

Information Spreading on Weighted Multiplex Social Network.Xuzhen Zhu, Jinming Ma, Xin Su, Hui Tian, Wei Wang & Shimin Cai - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-15.
Information spreading on multiplex networks has been investigated widely. For multiplex networks, the relations of each layer possess different extents of intimacy, which can be described as weighted multiplex networks. Nevertheless, the effect of weighted multiplex network structures on information spreading has not been analyzed comprehensively. We herein propose an information spreading model on a weighted multiplex network. Then, we develop an edge-weight-based compartmental theory to describe the spreading dynamics. We discover that under any adoption threshold of two subnetworks, reducing (...)

: In order to lay the foundation for the exploration of shale gas, logging data was used to calculate the total organic carbon of the Shahezi Formation source rocks in the Xujiaweizi Fault Depression in the Songliao Basin. Because the source rocks in the study area were formed in a lacustrine basin, they are characterized by strong organic heterogeneity, making it difficult to objectively characterize any changes in the TOC of the underground source rocks based on discrete and limited sampling.
