Originally conceptualized by Bandura as the process of cognitive restructuring that allows individuals to disassociate with their internal moral standards and behave unethically without feeling distress, moral disengagement has attracted the attention of management researchers in recent years. An increasing body of research has examined the factors which lead people to morally disengage and its related outcomes in the workplace. However, the conceptualization of moral disengagement, how it should be measured, the manner in which it develops, and its influence on (...) work outcomes are areas of continued debate among researchers. In this article, we undertake a systematic review of research on moral disengagement in the workplace and develop a comprehensive research agenda that highlights opportunities for theoretical and empirical advancement of the literature. Coastal protection is crucial to human development since the ocean has many values associated with the economy, ecosystem, and culture. However, most ocean protecting efforts are currently ineffective due to the burdens of finance, lack of appropriate management, and international cooperation regimes. For aiding bottom-up initiatives for ocean protection support, this study employed the Mindsponge Theory to examine how the public’s perceived economic and cultural values influence their willingness to support actions to protect the ocean. Analyzing the European-Union-Horizon-2020-funded dataset of (...) 709 respondents from 42 countries, we discovered that perceived economic values have negative effects on the tendency of ocean protection supports (i.e., food, transportation, renewable energy, oil and gas, and recreation). In contrast, certain perceived cultural values can help increase the willingness to do so (i.e., mental well-being and sense of identity). However, the effects of perceived cultural values are only moderately reliable. These findings suggest that designing cultural information delivery campaigns can help promote coastal reserve supports, such as fundraisings and preserving the oceans from the community. (shrink)

Structure and organization seems to be at the root of many of the questions raised about institutional behaviour; however, with respect to research on university capacity building, few studies have examined research organizational problems, particularly in developing countries. This study investigates academic reactions to the structure and organization of research at four leading Vietnamese universities. Through document analysis and semi-structured interviews with 55 participants, the study finds that the four case-study Vietnamese universities have accomplished a number of the more visible (...) tasks of research management such as creating research and research management positions; deciding primary organizational units for research delivery; creating a research office; and creating research oversight committees. However, they seem to neglect the other less visible tasks of organizing and structuring research such as developing rules for research integrity; developing a mechanism for evaluating the quality of research outcomes; preparing researchers and research managers for the necessary skills and knowledge; and deciding vertical and horizontal decentralization. The study concludes that even though research has been formally structured and organized, the management of research has not yet been professionalized. The key problem in organizing and structuring research is the lack of an effective system for research behaviour formalization. A more effective system for better formalizing research behaviours should be developed so that Vietnamese universities can integrate more successfully into the global research. (shrink)

Using a nationwide survey of provincial institutional quality and a sample of private manufacturing small and medium scale enterprises, this paper contributes to the literature by considering for the first time the effects of corruption on the financial performance of Vietnamese private SMEs. Interestingly, contrary to previous findings, we find that corruption when measured by a dummy variable, does not affect firms’ financial performance after controlling for heterogeneity, simultaneity and dynamic endogeneity. However, the intensity of bribery and the majority of (...) the forms of corruption were found to have negative impacts on firms’ financial performance. Hence, a typical approach using only a dummy variable for bribery might not adequately evaluate the impact of bribe intensity or even ignores the negative impacts of some types of bribes on firms’ financial performance. The findings suggest that anti-corruption measures are vital for the development of the Vietnamese private SMEs. (shrink)

Important features of space and time are taken to be missing in quantum gravity, allegedly requiring an explanation of the emergence of spacetime from non-spatio-temporal theories. In this paper, we argue that the explanatory gap between general relativity and non-spatio- temporal quantum gravity theories might significantly be reduced with two moves. First, we point out that spacetime is already partially missing in the context of general relativity when understood from a dynamical perspective. Second, we argue that most approaches to quantum (...) gravity already start with an in-built distinction between structures to which the asymmetry between space and time can be traced back. Spacetime functionalism is the view that spacetime is a functional structure implemented by a more fundamental ontology. Lam and Wüthrich have recently argued that spacetime functionalism helps to solve the epistemological problem of empirical coherence in quantum gravity and suggested that it also (dis)solves the hard problem of spacetime, namely the problem of offering a picture consistent with the emergence of spacetime from a non-spatio-temporal structure. First, I will deny that spacetime functionalism solves the hard problem by showing that it (...) comes in various species, each entailing a different attitude towards, or answer to, the hard problem. Second, I will argue that the existence of an explanatory gap, which grounds the hard problem, has not been correctly taken into account in the literature. (shrink)

This analysis used data, primarily from the 1997 Vietnamese Demographic and Health Survey (VN-DHS 1997), to determine the changes in contraceptive use in Vietnam. A descriptive analysis of individual, household and community characteristics was made to obtain a general description of contraceptive use. Multinomial logistic regression analyses were also performed on the currently married in (a) a sample of all women and (b) only those women who live in rural areas, to identify the strength of association that each variable has (...) with the use of modern contraceptives. The use of any contraceptive method and the use of modern methods increased from 1988 to 1997. The primary contraceptive method utilized is the IUD and its use has increased substantially from 1988 to 1997. Younger women (aged 15–24) were less likely to use any contraceptive method. Women not desiring additional children were significantly more likely to use contraceptive methods than those desiring more children. Education has a clear impact on both contraceptive knowledge and use by women, with higher educated women being more likely to use a contraceptive method. Illiterate women with no formal education were significantly less likely to use modern methods of contraception. Differentials in contraceptive use exist regarding place of residence. Urban women are more likely than rural women to use contraception, but the difference is not large. Women living in mountainous areas are less likely to use contraception, compared with women living in the lowlands. Living standards, especially the availability of electricity in the community, have a large effect on the methods of contraception adopted by women. Religion is not strongly related to the contraceptive behaviour of women. There were significant differences in the use of contraceptives in communities with good quality of care, with increased contraceptive use corresponding to the increase in availability of family planning workers at communes, provision of counselling services at health facilities, and the volume of mass media family planning messages. Dispositional monists believe that all properties are essentially causal. Recently, an overdetermination argument has been proposed by Trenton Merricks to support nihilism about ordinary objects. I argue that this argument can be extended to target both nihilism about ordinary objects and nihilism about physical particles when dispositional monism is assumed. It implies that a philosopher who both endorses dispositional monism and takes seriously the overdetermination argument should not believe in the existence of physical particles. I end up by discussing possible (...) objections. I suggest, then, that if we live in a world that is inhabited by causal properties but not by chairs and tables, then we also live in a world without electrons and quarks, a world of dispositional properties, that is, a world of causal fields. Les règles de la justice sont, d'après Friedrich Hayek, l'effet d'un ordre spontané et non de la volonté délibérée des hommes. Cette thèse renvoie à une conception de la règle abstraite et générale dont ce livre montre le lien avec les limites de la raison, l'abstraction constituant, selon Hayek, le moyen pour l'esprit de s'occuper d'une réalité que celui-ci ne peut entièrement comprendre. Une "primauté de l'abstrait" s'applique ainsi non seulement à l'ordre social - guidé par les règles abstraites de (...) la justice, mais également à l'ordre sensoriel, c'est-à-dire à notre perception du monde extérieur et aux dispositions à agir qui en résultent. Comment comprendre le lien entre cette primauté de l'abstrait et le libéralisme de Hayek, en particulier concernant sa conception de la "morale du marché" comme discipline des règles abstraites et son rejet de buts particuliers guidant l'action publique? According to the Ignorance Factivity Thesis, for every proposition p, one is ignorant of p only if p is a truth. By contrast, according to the Ignorance Non-Factivity Thesis, it is false that, for every proposition p, one is ignorant of p only if p is a truth. I argue that, on balance, the case for the latter thesis is stronger than the case for the former.

Parce que ses applications concernent la plupart des dimensions de l'action humaine, que son organisation et sa dynamique ne sont plus dissociables de celles de la cité, la science rencontre naturellement les normes qui régissent le comportement humain, celles de la morale ou du droit. Nombre de controverses et de débats concernant les sciences et les technologies en témoignent : s'y invitent tour à tour des normes sociales, éthiques, scientifiques et techniques, et l'on évoque même des "normes du vivant". Ces (...) différentes normes renvoient-elles à des phénomènes comparables? Sont-elles réellement de même nature? La science bouscule les régimes de normes, mais elle est elle-même questionnée quant à sa responsabilité, son éthique ou sa déontologie. Comment science, éthique et droit interagissent-ils et selon quelle dynamique? Comment de nouvelles normes émergent-elles? Les normes juridiques et éthiques sont-elles toujours en retard par rapport aux sciences? Si les sciences et les technologies entretiennent une perpétuelle et stimulante incertitude, cette même incertitude rend parfois difficile l'entente sur les usages. Sciences et société n'évoluent pas nécessairement au même rythme, tandis que le champ des normes, qui ne cesse de s'accroître et de se complexifier, est, pour le droit, source d'indétermination. Penser le progrès comme la capacité à partager des normativités et des normes, telle est l'ambition de cet ouvrage, issu de la quatrième université d'été de l'IHEST qui a exploré sous cet angle les relations entre science, éthique et droit. Dire que le temps est la plus commune des fictions peut apparaître comme une provocation. Le temps n’est-il pas ce qui rythme la vie de tout un chacun? Si rien d’humain ne m’est étranger, n’est-ce pas parce que je partage la connaissance commune à tous les êtres humains que mon temps est compté et qu’un jour je vais mourir? Et ma conscience du temps n’est-elle pas elle-même régulée par le temps social du groupe auquel j’appartiens? Le temps est individuel, le (...) temps est social, le temps est même universel puisque le Temps universel (TU) sert d’unité-étalon à tous les temps relatifs à la situation géographique d’un pays par rapport au méridien de Greenwich. Mais si le temps fait sens de toutes parts, comment alors justifier la proposition qui le réduit au statut de fiction même la plus commune? Le propos de cet ouvrage est de montrer que si nous interrogeons les différents sens du temps, nous sommes irrésistiblement incités à affirmer qu’il n’est qu’une fiction qui « réussit », au sens où elle emporte l’adhésion du plus grand nombre, et qui constitue à tous les niveaux un instrument majeur de domination. Un coup de dés jamais n'abolira le hasard, mais il suffit d'un seul pour le faire exister. Pour faire exister quoi, au juste? Certainement pas, hypostasiés, le hasard ou la fortune. Et si ce qu'on appelle hasard était coextensif aux innombrables coups de dés qui en relèvent? Y a-t-il d'abord, dans l'existence très en général, autre chose que des coups de dés (même s'ils se passent de dés et ne prennent pas forcément la forme de coups)? Localement, il semble bien (...) y avoir des nécessités ou, sur un autre plan, des mérites, mais que subsiste-t-il d'eux à l'échelle impensable de la pluralité des mondes? À remarquer qu'en tant que paysans, attachés au mieux à la localité terre, il est heureux que nous puissions essayer de nous raccrocher à quelque nécessité ou mérite, car vivre un "pur" hasard incessant risquerait fort de nous disloquer l'entendement et le reste. Mourir, c'est au moins devoir être arraché à notre échelle humaine (je ne me risquerai pas à dire que c'est en changer). Le problème, c'est que nous y tenons beaucoup à cette échelle, à cette mesure de toutes choses : aux aléas et aux nécessités, aux mérites et aux démérites, etc., de l'existence humaine. Il semble à nombre d'entre nous que cela vaut beaucoup mieux que rien, puisque mourir condamne pour eux à l'inexistence. "Rien" est ce drôle de mot qui, étymologiquement, dit la chose pour en arriver, dans notre langue, à dire la non-chose. Il suggère à sa façon que nous n'arrivons pas à penser la mort autrement que comme une négation de nos choses (êtres, affaires, faits, etc.). "Néant", si on s'en tient à son étymologie, est pire encore, car il peut signifier"non-race". Pourtant, nos choses sont bel et bien hasardeuses. Intégralement, aucune nécessité ne les ordonne et aucun mérite (ni démérite) n'en rend compte ; loin s'en faut. (shrink)
