In this paper, I shall defend two main claims. First, Friedman’s famous paper “On the methodology of positive economics” (“F53”) cannot be properly understood without taking into account the influence of three authors who are neither cited nor mentioned in the paper: Max Weber, Frank Knight, and Karl Popper. I shall trace both their substantive influence on F53 and the historical route by which this influence took place. Once one has understood these ingredients, especially Weber’s ideal types, many of F53’s (...) astonishing sentences like “the more significant the theory, the more unrealistic the assumptions”, make good sense. Second, I shall claim that the much-discussed question whether Friedman’s essay espouses an instrumentalist or a realist position, is the wrong question to be asked. I shall illustrate that by a comparison with examples from physics in which also unrealistic assumptions are made. Also there, the question whether these assumptions are indicators of instrumentalism or realism is not appropriate. Cleared from these misunderstandings, F53 presents itself as an interesting and reasonable but much less controversial contribution to the methodology of economics. (shrink)

One of the elements of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions not only confused his readers but even Kuhn himself, namely, his talk about world change. In my earlier work, I have tackled the question of Kuhn’s metaphysics from a viewpoint that was informed by Kant’s critical theoretical philosophy. Useful as this may be, in this chapter I will try a different approach. I will focus on the fact that Kuhn acted mainly as a reflective historian when he wrote Structure. Thus, (...) he reflected on what sort of image of science the appropriately pursued historiography of science would present to him. In this chapter, I try to reconstruct the experiences of the historian of science, who is somehow driven to talk about world change as something correlated with scientific revolutions, and want to find out whether Kuhn’s world change talk can be made plausible. On the point that, in practices of critical thinking, we respond spontaneously in concrete situations, this paper presents an account on behalf of Wittgenstein. I argue that the ‘seeing-things-aright’ model of Luntley's Wittgenstein is not adequate, since it pays insufficient attention to radically new circumstances, in which the content of norms is updated. While endorsing Bailin's emphasis on criteria of critical thinking, Wittgenstein would agree with Papastephanou and Angeli's demand to look behind criteriology. He maintains the primacy of the practical, (...) and yet contends that a reasonable person lets rules of rationality compel her. These rules are not mere heuristics. I further examine Burbules' conception of communicative reason, and, among others, his interpretation of Wittgenstein's sign-post example. (shrink)

Theodor Adorno's famous aesthetic theory was not merely a theory of the aesthetic; it also made a wider claim about the aesthetic implications of all theory. At the same time we have to deal with aesthetic objects and events in which an aesthetic theory is inherent, which show themselves as art. From both sides--theory and aesthetics--a link can be made to the etymological meaning of theōria, which understands the theoretical as a seeing or perspective. Few philosophers of science have influenced as many readers as Thomas S. Kuhn. Yet no comprehensive study of his ideas has existed--until now. In this volume, Paul Hoyningen-Huene examines Kuhn's work over four decades, from the days before The Structure of Scientific Revolutions to the present, and puts Kuhn's philosophical development in a historical framework. Scholars from disciplines as diverse as political science and art history have offered widely differing interpretations of Kuhn's ideas, appropriating his notions of paradigm shifts and (...) revolutions to fit their own theories, however imperfectly. Hoyningen-Huene does not merely offer another interpretation--he brings Kuhn's work into focus with rigorous philosophical analysis. Through extended discussions with Kuhn and an encyclopedic reading of his work, Hoyningen-Huene looks at the problems and justifications of his claims and determines how his theories might be expanded. Wer kennt GOTTLOB FREGE (1848-1925)? Nur wenige verbinden mit seinem Namen einen der groaten Logiker aller Zeiten, ohne dessen "Logik von Funktion und Argument" die heutige Computertechnik kaum denkbar ist. Frege fuhlte sich zeitlebens zu seiner Heimat im Norden Deutschlands hingezogen. In Wismar verbrachte er seine Kindheit und in Bad Kleinen, in unmittelbarer Nahe, seinen Lebensabend. Das im Jahre 2000 gegrundete Gottlob-Frege-Zentrum der Hochschule Wismar organisierte ihm zu Ehren im Mai 2013 in seiner Geburtsstadt eine internationale Konferenz, an der Forscher (...) aus der mathematischen Grundlagenforschung und der Analytischen Philosophie teilnahmen. This book provides a unique survey displaying the power of Riccati equations to describe reversible and irreversible processes in physics and, in particular, quantum physics. Quantum mechanics is supposedly linear, invariant under time-reversal, conserving energy and, in contrast to classical theories, essentially based on the use of complex quantities. However, on a macroscopic level, processes apparently obey nonlinear irreversible evolution equations and dissipate energy. The Riccati equation, a nonlinear equation that can be linearized, has the potential to link these two (...) worlds when applied to complex quantities. The nonlinearity can provide information about the phase-amplitude correlations of the complex quantities that cannot be obtained from the linearized form. As revealed in this wide ranging treatment, Riccati equations can also be found in many diverse fields of physics from Bose-Einstein-condensates to cosmology. Zu den Grenzfragen des Lebens. Bioethik als Feld intensiver Auseinandersetzung im fachwissenschaftlichen Diskurs und kontroverser Diskussionen in der breiten Öffentlichkeit. Das Handbuch erläutert die Grundlagen und gibt einen Überblick über Bereiche, in denen bioethische Fragen relevant sind, wie Menschenwürde, Leben, Tod und Krankheit. Daneben widmet es sich den speziellen bioethischen Problemen wie etwa Zulässigkeit von Sterbehilfe, Präimplantationsdiagnostik oder embryonaler Stammzellenforschung und zeigt die Schnittstellen der Bioethik zu anderen Disziplinen und gesellschaftlichen Bereichen auf (Bioethik in der Lehre, Biopolitik, Biorecht und Ethikkommissionen).

Für die 3. Auflage wurde der Band durchgesehen und die Literaturliste aktualisiert. Der Band gibt einen Überblick über die Probleme der Moralphilosophie und die Antworten der Ethik auf die Frage nach dem Wesen, den Funktionen und den Inhalten der Moral. Ein besonderer Akzent liegt auf der Unterscheidung der Ebenen, auf denen moralische und ethische Diskurse geführt werden. Geeignet ist die Einführung auch für Leser ohne besondere Vorkenntnisse.

There is a consensus that satire cannot be defined, but is best characterized by a cluster account. However, I argue that a cluster account does not acknowledge the artistically and politically significant distinction between real satire and some forms of frivolous topical comedy which are casually labeled ‘satire’ in international media contexts. To uphold this distinction, I introduce a weak proposal that satire is a genre which necessarily sets out to critique and entertain (with the qualification that these purposes necessarily (...) interact, although neither is wholly instrumental to the other). I further argue that this proposal also provides necessary and sufficient conditions for a definition of satire. (shrink)

Our starting point is the question ‘What is mass’, what in particular enables mass to constitute duration: so that mass can be regarded as moving as well as at rest (the kinematic principle of relativity). In a thought experiment, this question is attacked here not from the perspective of mass itself, but from that of a standing light wave. In this model, mass-analogous structures can be re- constructed that can be in relative motion to each other. The (empirically known) constancy (...) of the speed of light in every reference system is not as- sumed here. However, it can be shown that the speed of light is identical in all systems constituted by mass-analogous structures that move uniformly relative to each other and that the speed of light moreover is the limiting speed of mo- tions. This indepence of the motion of light from the system of reference, this character of absoluteness, and the relativity of mass motions thus prove to be contrary but inextricably linked moments of the kinematic principle of relativi- ty: an interesting perspective concerning a philosophy of relativity theory. - The mathematical relationships are explained in more detail in the appendix. Einer der auffälligsten gesellschaftlichen Trends der letzten zwanzig Jahre ist die zunehmende Moralisierung von Bereichen des individuellen und gesellschaftlichen Lebens, die in früheren Zeiten eher der Logik der effektiven Interessenverfolgung vorbehalten waren. Die Forderung nach der Übernahme und Wahrnehmung moralischer Verantwortung hat Lebensbereiche erfasst, die lange Zeit weitgehend außerhalb der Moral standen: Wirtschaft, Umwelt, Ressourcennutzung.

Die Geschichte des Diskurses um Mills Moralphilosophie verläuft in einer Kurve wechselnder Konjunkturen. Phasen des Interesses und der überwiegend positiven Würdigung wechseln sich ab mit Phasen des Desinteresses und überwiegender Ablehnung. Im viktorianischen England war Mill der bekannteste Intellektuelle seiner Epoche – ungeachtet der Tatsache, dass er zu vielen Themen alles andere als zu seiner Zeit populäre Auffassungen vertrat. Allerdings galt das Interesse seiner Zeitgenossen weniger seiner Moralphilosophie als vielmehr seiner ökonomischen Theorie und der in seinem System of Logic enthaltenen (...) Methodologie der induktiven Wissenschaften. Dagegen erregte der Kern seiner Moralphilosophie, die in seinem Essay Utilitarianism dargelegte Version eines nicht-Bentham’schenBentham, Jeremy Utilitarismus, weniger Aufsehen, als sich Mill erhofft hatte. In this paper I shall defend the idea that there is an abstract and general core meaning of objectivity, and what is seen as a variety of concepts or conceptions of objectivity are in fact criteria of, or means to achieve, objectivity. I shall then discuss the ideal of value-free science and its relation to the objectivity of science; its status can be at best a criterion of, or means for, objectivity. Given this analysis, we can then turn to the (...) problem of inductive risk. Do the value judgements regarding inductive risk really pose a threat to the objectivity of science? I claim that this is not the case because they do not lower the thresholds scientifically postulated for objectivity. I shall conclude the paper with a discussion of under-appreciated influences of values on science, which indeed pose a serious threat to the objectivity of some scientific disciplines. (shrink)

Ausgangspunkt ist die Frage, was Masse ist, wodurch sie insbesondere befähigt ist, Dauer zu konstituieren und deshalb - im Sinn des kinematischen Relativitätdprinzips - ebenso als bewegt wie als ruhend betrachtet werden kann. In einem Gedankenexperiment wird diese Frage, in Umkehrung der Perspektive, hier nicht von der Masse selbst, sondern von einer stehenden Lichtwelle her angegangen. In diesem Modell lassen sich masse-analoge Strukturen rekonstruieren, die in relativer Bewegung sein können. Die (empirisch bekannte) Unabhängigkeit der Lichtgeschwindigkeit vom Bezugssystem ist dabei nicht (...) vorausgesetzt. Doch kann gezeigt werden, dass die Lichtgeschwindigkeit Grenzgeschwindigkeit solcher relativer Bewegungen ist, dass dies für alle durch masse-analoge Strukturen konstituierte, relativ zueinander gleichförmig bewegten Bezugssysteme gilt und dass die Lichtgeschwindigkeit selbst in allen diesen Systemen gleich ist. Die Absolutheit der Lichtgeschwindigkeit und die Relativität der Massebewegungen erweisen sich so als zwar differente, aber intrinsisch zusammengehörende Momente des kinematischen Relativitätsprinzips: ein Beitrag zu einer Philosophie der Relativitätstheorie. - Die mathematischen Zusammenhänge werden im Anhang ausführlicher dargelegt. Die meisten Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften kennzeichnen sich durch das Bemühen darum, die Welt mit klaren Kategorien zu erkennen. Diesem unterliegt die Vorstellung der linearen Grenze. Unter Rückgriff auf Befunde aus dem nordafrikanischen und europäischen Mittelmeerraum kontextualisiert der vorliegende Artikel mit ethnologischem Blick das Gedankenmodell der Linearität historisch, politisch und kulturell, indem er dieses mit Grenzen als Zonen des Überganges kontrastiert und nach dem epistemologischen Gewinn fragt, der sich daraus für die Disziplinen entfaltet.

Zur Signatur moderner Gesellschaften gehört ihr Pluralismus. Davon ist der Bereich der Ethik nicht ausgenommen. Wofür ein moralischer Pluralismus im Einzelnen steht, das ist allerdings alles andere als eindeutig. Um der Kontroverse über moralische Vielfalt, die in der Gegenwart nicht selten diffus geführt wird, möglichst klare Konturen zu verleihen, empfiehlt es sich, wenigstens drei Grundarten zu unterscheiden: einen deskriptiv-ethischen, einen normativ-ethischen und einen tugendethischen Pluralismus. Innerhalb der jeweiligen Grundart sind, wie in dieser Abhandlung schwerpunktmäßig aufgezeigt wird, etliche Differenzierungen anzubringen. Ohne (...) sich einen Überblick über zentrale Varianten eines moralischen und ethischen Pluralismus zu verschaffen, kann der Diskurs nicht sachgerecht geführt werden. Vorwiegend werden mannigfache Facetten moralischer Diversität eruiert. Einige Hinweise, wie mit dem Pluralismus verantwortlich umgegangen werden kann, werden angefügt. (shrink)

FriedrichJulius Stahl (1802-1861), der einst berühmte konservative Staatsphilo­ soph, Kirchenrechtslehrer und Politiker, gilt heute in der Hauptsache als Theoretiker des »monarchischen Prinzips« und als Verfechter eines autoritären Staats- und Kir­ chenbegriffs. Dieses Urteil erfaßt jedoch nur eine Seite der Leistung Stahls; es ver­ leitet dazu, seine politische Theorie als Konstruktion zur Rechtfertigung des monar­ chischen Prinzips und des »Obrigkeitsstaates« anzusehen und daher als überholt ab­ zutun. Die fruchtbaren Ansätze der politischen Wissenschaft, die in Stahls Werk enthalten sind, werden dabei übersehen. (...) In der Literatur ist Stahl bisher relativ wenig Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet wor­ den. Die liberale Staatslehre seiner Zeit sah in Stahl primär den politischen Gegner und bemühte sich kaum um ein tieferes Eindringen in sein Denken 1. Die erste philo­ sophisch gründliche Kritik an Stahl übte 1861 der Herbartianer Thilo 2; sein philo­ sophischer Standpunkt hinderte ihn jedoch daran, die auf Schelling zurückgehende Komponente in Stahls Denken verständnisvoll zu erfassen. So sieht er Widersprüche bei Stahl auch dort, wo keine sind. (shrink)
