Al-Qadi al-Nu´man b. En ella, al-Nu´man (...)

Footprints of "Experiment" in Early Arabic Optics.Elaheh Kheirandish - 2009 - Early Science and Medicine 14 (1-3):79-104.
This study traces the early developments of the concept of experiment with a view of extending the subject in both content and approach. It extends the content of the subject slightly backward, prior to the methodological breakthroughs of the Optics of Ibn al-Haytham , which are credited as a "significant landmark in the history of experimental science." And it extends the approach to the subject slightly forward, from the premise that early science was "largely carried out in books," to a (...)

The Preferences of Al-Kisāʾī : Grammar and Meaning in a Canonical Reading of the Qur’An.Ramon Harvey - 2016 - International Journal for the Semiotics of Law - Revue Internationale de Sémiotique Juridique 29 (2):313-332.
The Qur’an has been transmitted as both a written text and an oral recital. This has led to the development of a reading tradition that permits numerous different vocalisations to be made upon the basic skeletal text of the established ʿUthmānī codex. Ibn al-Jazarī chose ten early readers whom he felt were most representative of this tradition and whose readings are treated as canonical up until this day. One of these, the Kufan linguist al-Kisāʾī has been characterised in the literature (...)

L'extinction (...)

    Regards d'Ibn Rushd Sur Al-Juwaynī Questions de Méthode.Mokdad Arfa Mensia - 2012 - Arabic Sciences and Philosophy 22 (2):199-216.
This essay is concerned with the complex relationships between falsafa and kalām. As regards the history of the latter, it has been generally agreed that al-Juwaynī played a decisive role at a moment when Avicennism became intrusive. It is mainly in his al-ʿAqīda al-niẓāmiyya that al-Juwaynī initiated a doctrinal and methodic evolution of Ashʿarism. One necessarily invokes here Ibn Rushd, who, by exposing the dogmas in their literal manifestation in his al-Kashf ʿan manāhij al-adilla fī ʿaqāʾid al-milla, actually sought to (...)

In an influential article, A. I. Sabra identified an intellectual trend from twelfth and thirteenth-century Andalusia which he described as the ‘‘Andalusian revolt against Ptolemaic astronomy.” Philosophers such as Ibn Rushd , Ibn Tufayl , and Maimonides objected to Ptolemy’s theories on philosophic grounds, not because of shortcomings in the theories' predictive accuracy. Sabra showed how al-Bitrūjī's Kitāb al-Hay'a attempted to account for observed planetary motions in a way that met the philosophic standards of those philosophers and others. In Nūr (...)

In Defence of the Sovereignty of Philosophy: Al-BaghdādĪ's Critique of Ibn Al-Haytham's Geometrisation of Placean Earlier Concise Version of This Paper Was Presented on 18 February 2006 in Florence, Under the Title: ‘The Physical or the Mathematical? Interrogating Al-BaghdādĪ's Critique of Ibn Al-Haytham's Geometrisation of Place’, as Part of the Colloque de la Société Internationale d'Histoire Des Sciences Et Des Philosophies Arabes Et Islamiques , Which Was Held in Association with the University of Florence. This paper investigates the objections that were raised by the philosopher ‘Abd al-La&tdotu;īf al-Baghdādī against al-&Hdotu;asan ibn al-Haytham’s geometrisation of place. In this line of enquiry, I contrast the philosophical propositions that were advanced by al-Baghdādī in his tract: Fī al-Radd ‘alā Ibn al-Haytham fī al-makān, with the geometrical demonstrations that Ibn al-Haytham presented in his groundbreaking treatise: Qawl fī al-Makān. In examining the particulars of al-Baghdādī’s fragile defence of Aristotle’s definition of topos as delineated in Book IV of the (...)

    L'optique d'Ibn Al-Haytham Et la Tradition Ptoléméenne.Gérard Simon - 1992 - Arabic Sciences and Philosophy 2 (2):203.
