Applying Value Sensitive Design to Wind Turbines and Wind Parks: An Exploration.Ilse Oosterlaken - 2015 - Science and Engineering Ethics 21 (2):359-379.
Community acceptance still remains a challenge for wind energy projects. The most popular explanation for local opposition, the Not in My Backyard effect, has received fierce criticism in the past decade. Critics argue that opposition is not merely a matter of selfishness or ignorance, but that moral, ecological and aesthetic values play an important role. In order to better take such values into account, a more bottom-up, participatory decision process is usually proposed. Research on this topic focusses on either stakeholder (...)

The Belgian E-ID and its Complex Path to Implementation and Innovational Change.Ilse Mariën & Leo van Audenhove - 2010 - Identity in the Information Society 3 (1):27-41.
This article provides a critical view on the development and deployment phase of the e-ID in Belgium since 1999. It is based on extensive desk research and fifteen in depth-interviews with experts and stakeholders from government, administration, academia and industry who have been key in the development of the e-ID. The article identifies different elements that influenced, both in a positive and negative way, the societal, technical and political aspects of the Belgian e-ID. It shows that no severe problems occurred (...)

    Biological Memory.Ilse Walker - 1972 - Acta Biotheoretica 21 (3-4):203-235.
A specific mapping mechanism is defined as the basic unit of “Biological Memory”. This mechanism must account for the characteristic frequency patterns in the organic world, where future probability is a function of past experience. The conditions for the function of biological memory are analysed. It is found that asymmetry, and irreversibility as a consequence of complexity, are the basic principles of memory function. The essential asymmetries in genetic memory are pointed out, and the problem of bilateral symmetry in a (...)

  6. On the Necessity of Distinguishing Between (Un)Boundedness and (a)Telicity.Ilse Depraetere - 1995 - Linguistics and Philosophy 18 (1):1 - 19.
It is argued that two different types of concept are often intermingled in discussions of Aktionsart. The most common type of classification is one of situation types, relating to the potential actualisation of a situation, although some of the definitions have to do with the actual realization of the situation. This distinction, adequately captured by the notions (a)telicity and (un)boundedness (Declerck 1989), is explored and it is shown how NPs, PPs and tense influence a sentence''s classification as (un)bounded.

  7. Is Pogge a Capability Theorist in Disguise?: A Critical Examination of Thomas Pogge’s Defence of Rawlsian Resourcism.Ilse Oosterlaken - 2013 - Ethical Theory and Moral Practice 16 (1):205-215.
Thomas Pogge answers the question if the capability approach can be justified with a firm ‘no’. Amongst others, he ridicules capability theorists for demanding compensation for each and every possible natural difference between people, including hair types. Not only does Pogge, so this paper argues, misconstrue the difference between the capability approach and Rawlsian resourcism. Even worse: he is actually implicitly relying on the idea of capabilities in his defence of the latter. According to him the resourcist holds that the (...)

Scientific Perspectivism in Secondary-School Chemistry Education.Ilse Landa, Hanna Westbroek, Fred Janssen, Jacqueline van Muijlwijk & Martijn Meeter - 2020 - Science & Education 29 (5):1361-1388.
The importance of learning chemical ways of thinking is widely recognized. Various frameworks have been developed to address the essence of chemistry and chemical thinking. However, very few studies have focused on how chemical ways of thinking can be defined. To elaborate chemical ways of thinking, this paper draws on scientific perspectivism. Scientific perspectivism states that, within each general domain, several broadly accepted theoretical models exist side by side. These general theoretical models, or theoretical perspectives, determine which research questions are (...)

Zoologische Gärten in Stadtkultur und Wissenschaft im 19. Jahrhundert.Ilse Jahn - 1992 - Berichte Zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte 15 (4):213-225.
The foundation and administration of European Zoological gardens in the 19th century is analized. It is significant of such new institutions, that they are founded in the large cities, and that most of the founders looked at the great models in Paris and London, which are described first. Further it is shown that the change from princely menageries to public Zoological Gardens is caused both by common interests in people's education and pleasure and by scientific aims which leaded to choose (...)

Collaborative Learning in Pre‐Service Teacher Education: An Exploratory Study on Related Conceptions, Self‐Efficacy and Implementation.Ilse Ruys, Hilde Van Keer & Antonia Aelterman - 2010 - Educational Studies 36 (5):537-553.
In this study, the actual position of collaborative learning in teacher education is examined. One hundred and twenty teacher educators and 369 student teachers are surveyed on general educational beliefs, mental models and conceptions related to CL. The self‐efficacy and the implementation of CL are also taken under scrutiny. The results reveal that CL is highly valued as a teaching strategy for primary school children; however, student teachers do not prefer to collaborate themselves during their learning process. Student teachers’ self‐efficacy (...)

Semantics and Pragmatics: Drawing a Line.Raphael Salkie & Ilse Depraetere (eds.) - 2016 - Cham, Switzerland: Springer Verlag.
This book explores new territory at the interface between semantics and pragmatics, reassessing a number of linguistic phenomena in the light of recent advances in pragmatic theory and presenting stimulating insights by experts in linguistics and philosophy. The authors begin by reassessing the definition of four theoretical concepts: saturation, free pragmatic enrichment, completion and expansion. They go on to confront disciplines that have addressed similar issues but that have not necessarily been in close contact, and then turn to questions related (...)

Accountability and responsibility are key concepts in the academic and societal debate on Autonomous Weapon Systems, but these notions are often used as high-level overarching constructs and are not operationalised to be useful in practice. “Meaningful Human Control” is often mentioned as a requirement for the deployment of Autonomous Weapon Systems, but a common definition of what this notion means in practice, and a clear understanding of its relation with responsibility and accountability is also lacking. In this paper, we present (...)

The Double System of Tense Forms Referring to Future Time in English.Ilse Depraetere & Renaat Declerck - 1995 - Journal of Semantics 12 (3):269-310.
As is well known, some types of subclause in English differ from independent clauses in that they require a different tense form when the reference is to the future. We say I will be happy if the weather is nice tomorrow, but not*I am happy if the weather is nice tomorrow or *I will be happy if the weather will be nice tomorrow. As is clear from these examples, the two ways of referring to the future are subject to different (...)
