In his late philosophy, Wittgenstein radically dissociates religion and metaphysics. In the first part of this paper, the implicit consequences of his critique of metaphysics for his philosophy of religion are analysed. On the one hand, it appears that Wittgenstein, in contrast to Aristotelian metaphysics, has no place for any metaphysical understanding of God, on the other hand, in contrast to Plato's metaphysical epistemology, it becomes evident that for him there is no possibility of any kind of metaphysical experience of (...) God. The last part questions the a-metaphysical foundations of his positive understanding of religion. (shrink)

Adorno und Levinas haben in ihren im Abstand von wenigen Jahren erschienenen Hauptwerken "Negative Dialektik" (1966) und "Totalität und Unendlichkeit" (1961) vom Anspruch epistemischer Beherrschung der neuzeitlichen Erstphilosophie Abstand genommen. Anders als für die Denker der Postmoderne wird ihre Kritik jedoch nicht als ein Abbau der Vernunft in Richtung rationaler Beliebigkeit inszeniert. Beide beanspruchen die neuzeitliche Erstphilosophie so zu überwinden, dass ein vorbegrifflicher bzw. vorthematischer Fremdsinn als konstitutiv für die intentionale Leistung von Eigen-Sinn gedacht wird.

At the time of existential philosophy, the similarities between Kierkegaard's and Heigegger's existential analysis and in particular their understanding of anxiety were usually emphasised. I would like to point out the irreconcilable contrast in the understanding of anxiety of both authors, the difference being that Kierkegaard is the representant of a teleological, Heidegger on the contrary of an a-teleological anthropology.

Les (...) théories de la conscience de soi de Klaus Düsing et de Michel Henry, qui décrivent cette conscience préréflexive au moyen d’une connaissance positive, attestent l’échec d’une telle entreprise. The article compares Kierkegaard’s and Marcel’s comprehension of existence and communication of existence. With reference to the notion of existence, both authors (independently from each other) develop the idea of a second reflection that includes a theory of communication. But whereas Kierkegaard conceives communication strictly within a first person perspective, Marcel establishes a kind of second person perspective. For this reason and despite a strong common basis in their views, different aspects of communication of existence are put forward by them.

In kritischer Anlehnung an die empirischen Kognitionspsychologie von K.E. Stanovich erweist sich das menschliche Verlangen wesentlich von drei übergeordenten Interessen geprägt: ein Interesse der Gene an der Replikation ihrer selbst, ein Interesse des Individuums am eigenen Glück, und ein Interesse der Vernunft, das auf die universale Verwirklichung des Guten um seiner selbst willen gerichtet ist. Je nachdem, von welchem Interesse sich der Mensch in seinem Leben leiten lässt, verleiht es seinem Verständnis vom guten Leben eine grundsätzlich andere Richtung. Was gutes (...) Leben ist, hängt jedoch zusätzlich von der Lebensform ab, die ein Mensch vertritt. Im zweiten Teil werden zwei grundsätzlich entgegengesetzte Lebensformen untersucht: eine atheistische und eine theistische. Es zeigt sich, dass für eine atheistische Lebensform das Interesse des Individuums konsistent ist, für eine theistische Lebensform hingegen das Interesse der Vernunft. Das gute Leben für den Atheisten besteht in der Verfolgung seines eigenen Glücks, das gute Leben für den Theisten in der universalen Verwirklichung des Guten um seiner selbst willen. (shrink)

Occidental philosophy tends to subordinate the individual to the general. The mystical marxism of Ernst Bloch seems to value the individual more than does orthodox marxism. This article shows that after all Bloch falls in line with the tendency of occidental philosophy.

In Western intellectual history faith is usually subordinated to knowledge. Ideally, mere faith is to be overcome by knowledge. However is this view appropriate to the Christian self-understanding? Do we not need to assume that faith always includes some knowledge, that faith and knowledge are directly intertwined? But what kind of knowledge would that be? And what does it mean for the idea of an eschatological knowledge of God? The study examines this issue with reference to the Bible, Thomas Aquinas (...) and Hans Urs von Balthasar. (shrink)

Analysis of a basic idea of Christian anthropology: that human desire is ultimately a desire of God.

I consider the relationship between the notion of certainty and the notion of a form of life. There are circumstances under which a feeling of certainty may become the ground for adopting a certain form of life. The forms of life I have in mind are those with a formal orientation towards the realization of the (morally) good for its own sake. The article proceeds in three steps: First I consider Luther’s certainty of salvation as a kind of inaugural (theological) (...) reflection on what will be called immediate certainty as the basis for a form of life aiming at the realization of the morally good for its own sake. With reference to Kierkegaard’s “Either-Or” I then try to show that such an immediate certainty can also be considered as the ground of an ethical form of life without religious implications. With the help of contemporary cognitive psychology I will finally propose an explanation of such a certainty as one that we experience because of our universal cognitive and conative constitution. The three steps amount to a universalization and naturalization of Luther’s certainty of salvation. (shrink)

Der Artikel versucht aufzuweisen, dass von Franz Rosenzweigs philosophischem Hauptwerk her, dem 1921 erschienenen "Stern der Erlösung", eine Alternative zur Ethik Kants entworfen werden kann, die zugleiche an einem der wichtigsten Grundsätze dieser Ethik, dem der unbedingten Achtung der Person, festhält und ihn vertieft. Statt das Selbst als identisch mit der allgemeinen Vernunftnatur des Menschen zu setzen, wie Kant es tut, soll mit Hilfe von Rosenzweig dargelegt werden, dass menschliches Handeln in einer auf keine Allgemeinheit reduzierbaren, singulären Subjektivität gründet, die (...) zugleich Telos unseres Handelns ist. Dabei stellt Rosenzweig den unmittelbaren Zusammenhang zwischen einer in ihrer Individualität bejahten Subjektivität und religiöser Offenbarung heraus. Erst durch eine solche Offenbarung wird der Mensch zu seiner letzten ethischen Kompetenz befreit. (shrink)

For ancient philosophy: Plato, Aristotle and Plotinus; for medieval philosophy: Augustine, Thomas Aquinas and William of Ockham; for the modern period: Descartes, Kant and Hegel. The final chapter outlines some prominent opponents of metaphysics in the 19th/20th Century (Feuerbach, Marx, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Heidegger). Metaphysics being a fundamental philosophical discipline, this book can also be read as an introduction to philosophy as such.

The book deals with the structure of our concrete experience of freedom according to the existence analysis of Kierkegaard in his pseudonymous works. Contrary to the (pre-)judgment of Modernity that freedom could only be adequately understood as full autonomy, Kierkegaard’s analysis shows that the highest form of freedom is realized not in full autonomy but in a relationship with God and therefore in a dialectic of autonomy and dependence. The starting point of the interpretation is the idea that Kierkegaard’s stages (...) of existence are equivalent to stages of freedom. (shrink)

Der Artikel untersucht das Verhältnis von Erkenntnis und Liebe bei Hans Urs von Balthasar. Die Liebe ist für ihn kein selbstbezogenes Streben nach dem, was man nicht besitzt, wie das Streben zur Fülle des Seins im griechischen bzw. zum Nichtsein im indischen Denken, sondern selbstlose Hingabe, etwa im Sinn eines innertrinitarischen Verschenkens des eigenen Seins, einer Herablassung Gottes zum Geschöpf in Schöpfung und Erlösung oder als ein reines Sein-für-das-Sein-des-Erkenntnis- gegenstandes im menschlichen Erkenntnisakt. Die Liebe ist zudem kein Moment der Erkenntnis, (...) sondern die Erkenntnis als von der Liebe umfaßt zu verstehen. Liebe aber zielt letztlich immer auf den singulären Gegenstand in seiner Singularität, womit sich die Bewegungsumkehr insbesondere als eine Umkehr der indischen Abwendung vom Individuellen bzw. des griechisch-antiken Aufstiegs vom Besonderen zum Allgemeinen erweist. Die abendländische Philosophie ist von einer durchgängigen Vorherrschaft des Allgemeinen gegenüber dem Individuellen geprägt. Da Erkennen wesentlich heißt, das Partikulare als Fall des Allgemeinen zu verstehen, besteht eine Art fatale Tendenz zur Unterordnung, eine Tendenz, deren Opfer nicht nur der einzelne Mensch ist, sondern heute auch die als beliebig ersetzbares Wegwerfprodukt verstandene Natur. Am Leitfaden der Philosophie Hans Urs von Balthasar weist das Buch den Weg zu einer Metaphysik, deren ausgezeichneter Gegenstand das individuelle, bzw. unwiederholbar singuläre Sein ist. The article is a response to Michael Roth´s criticism of my contention that to do the good for its own sake absolutely speaking makes only sense within the limits of a commitment to theism.

Against the general view of analytical Plato-research I intend to show that Plato's Theory of Ideas can today still be interpreted as metaphysics in a positive sense. With the late Wittgenstein I concede that by hypostasizing concepts it is not possible to posit any kind of transcendance. However for Plato this was not the true reason for his metaphysical interpretation of Ideas, but - as G. Vlastos also notices - a metaphysical experience as it is described in particular in the (...) Ascent-Passage of the Symposium. Given that this experience can only be interpreted as a coincidence of thought and intuition, the analytical presupposition which is responsible for the anti-metaphysical attitude among analytical interpreters - predicates can be no objects - is necessarely relativised. The possibility of such an experience however cannot just be ruled out as philosophically irrelevant. (shrink)

The article justifies the (augustinian or thomistic) idea of a natural desire for God through a critical analysis of Freud's understanding of culture and religion.

The article deals with the question of whether human beings are religious by nature. The answer is based on the idea of relating religion to the structure of human desire understood as essentially a desire for absolute perfection. Religion is defined as a relation to a non-sensual reality superior to the human realm which enables human beings to find orientation in life. The relationship of religion to human desire consists in its being an expression of a natural desire for a (...) perfection extending to the whole of reality. -/- -/- Der Aufsatz befasst sich mit der Frage, ob der Mensch ein von Natur auf Religion angelegtes Wesen ist. Zu ihrer Beantwortung wird das Phänomen der Religion mit der Struktur menschlichen Verlangens als einem grundsätzlichen Verlangen nach Vollkommenheit schlechthin in Verbindung gebracht. Religion wird bestimmt als die Beziehung des Menschen zu einer sich den Sinnen entziehenden, ihm werthaft übergeordneten Wirklichkeit, die Lebensorientierung bietet. Was das Verhältnis zum menschlichen Verlangen betrifft, erweist die so bestimmte Religion sich als Ausdruck einer zur Natur des Menschen gehörigen Sehnsucht nach wirklichkeitsumfassender Vollkommenheit. Despite the fact that the late Augustine's idea of eschatological accomplishment stresses the function of the body more than does the early Augustine, (partly) dependent on stoicism, it remains a purely intellectualistic conception of accomplishment.

Levinas theory of a self is interpreted as a threefold model: an epistemic self, a lifeworld self and an intersubjective self. Against the modern idea of an identitiy of sovereignty and self-affirmation, Levinas wants to show that self-affirmation at its highest is reached where the self instead of being sovereign is in a position of dependence and passivity which is the case for the intersubjective self.

The present article seeks to show, with reference to Thomas Aquinas and Richard Swinburne, that classical theism cannot reconcile the idea of divine perfection with the modern idea of a person. It then proposes a solution which consists in applying to the doctrine of God the model of complementarity which Niels Bohr first used in quantum physics in his attempt to explain (among other things) the duality between wave and particle. This model is then applied by juxtaposing the description of (...) God as a perfect being, established through the 'via negativa', and the description of God as a person, esablished through the 'via positiva' as two contradictory, albeit necessary, descriptions. My aim is to relate Søren A. Kierkegaard’s early theory of stages as described basically in “Either-Or” to the theory of interest underlying the two process model of cognition of the Canadian psychologist Keith E. Stanovich with regard to the question of the highest formal goal we can pursue in our life. On the basis of Stanovich’s distinction between type 1 and type 2 processing and Kierkegaard’s distinction between an esthetical and an ethical stage of life, I argue for an (...) extension of Stanovich’s understanding of the goal structure of type 2 processing, for Kierkegaard’s ethical stage of life being a natural expression of our cognitive faculties and for a critical approach to Kierkegaard's idea of a religious stage as hinted at in “Fear and Trembling”.
