Data taken by the Mark II detector at the PEP storage ring was used to measure the rate of dilepton production in multihadronic events produced by e+ (...)e- annihilation ats=29 GeV. We determine the probability that a hadron initially containing a b quark decays to a positive lepton to be 0.17-0.08+0.15, with 90% confidence level limits of 0.06 and 0.38. © 1990. (shrink)

    The Bewaji, Van Binsbergen and Ramose Debate on 'Ubuntu'.J. A. I. Bewaji & M. B. Ramose - 2003 - South African Journal of Philosophy 22 (4):378-414.
What follows is a discussion, in three parts, of the African concept of ubuntu and related issues. In the first part of the discussion J.A.I. Bewaji (...) assesses an essay by W.M.J. van Binsbergen on Ubuntu and the Globalisation of Southern African Thought and Society (2001). In the second part Bewaji reviews M.B. Ramose's African Philosophy through Ubuntu (2002). And in the third part Ramose responds to both Bewaji and Van Binsbergen. Although Ramose disagrees with some of Bewaji's comments and interpretationsespecially with regard to the thesis on which ubuntu is, according to the former, founded (i.e. “that ontology proper is a rheology”) – both Bewaji and Ramose agree that Van Binsbergen's critique of ubuntu philosophy, and specifically of Ramose's explication thereof, is untenable. Combinatorial Properties of the Ideal $Mathfrak{B}_2$.J. Cichon, A. Roslanowski, J. Steprans & B. Weglorz - 1993 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 58 (1):42-54.
By $\mathfrak{B}_2$ we denote the $\sigma$-ideal of all subsets $A$ of the Cantor set $\{0,1\}^\omega$ such that for every infinite subset $T$ of $\omega (...)$ the restriction $A\mid\{0,1\}^T$ is a proper subset of $\{0,1\}^T$. In this paper we investigate set theoretical properties of this and similar ideals. (shrink)

    Plato's Cretan City: A Historical Interpretation of the Laws.J. A. B. - 1961 - Review of Metaphysics 14 (3):570-571.
A comprehensive study of Plato's last and most difficult work. Professor Morrow's theme is that in the Laws Plato is applying his basic principles to the (...) precise historical conditions of his time, out of consuming interest in the moral and political development of mankind. The concept of the "mixture" or "mean," as developed in the Politicus and Philebus, is treated as the key to the philosophical interpretation of the Laws, law itself being the "limit"; human nature, the natural environment, and existing laws and customs, the "unlimited." Prof. Morrow places the weight of his interpretation on the latter, since a determination of the actual character of Greek institutions, as Plato knew, seems essential to a correct analysis of the "composite" institutions we find in the Laws.--. Alzheimer's Disease -Like Pathology in Aged Monkeys After Infantile Exposure to Environmental Metal Lead : Evidence for a Developmental Origin and Environmental Link for AD.J. Wu, M. R. Basha, B. Brock, D. P. Cox, F. Cardozo-Pelaez, C. A. McPherson, J. Harry, D. C. Rice, B. Maloney, D. Chen, D. K. Lahiri & N. H. Zawia - 2008 - J Neurosci 28:3-9.
The sporadic nature of Alzheimer's disease argues for an environmental link that may drive AD pathogenesis; however, the triggering factors and the period of their action (...)are unknown. Recent studies in rodents have shown that exposure to lead during brain development predetermined the expression and regulation of the amyloid precursor protein and its amyloidogenic beta-amyloid product in old age. Here, we report that the expression of AD-related genes [APP, BACE1 ] as well as their transcriptional regulator were elevated in aged monkeys exposed to Pb as infants. Furthermore, developmental exposure to Pb altered the levels, characteristics, and intracellular distribution of Abeta staining and amyloid plaques in the frontal association cortex. These latent effects were accompanied by a decrease in DNA methyltransferase activity and higher levels of oxidative damage to DNA, indicating that epigenetic imprinting in early life influenced the expression of AD-related genes and promoted DNA damage and pathogenesis. These data suggest that AD pathogenesis is influenced by early life exposures and argue for both an environmental trigger and a developmental origin of AD. (shrink)

    Aristotle's System of the Physical World: A Comparison With His Predecessors[REVIEW]A. B. J. - 1961 - Review of Metaphysics 14 (4):726-727.
Solmsen presents an interesting discussion of Aristotle's physical theory. He considers each topic, such as genesis, time, the infinite, in terms of Aristotle's similarities and differences (...) with Pre-Socratic and Platonic thought. His results are piece-meal because "Aristotle himself does not investigate each topic of his physical system with his mind focused on a final synthesis of all major conclusions."--J. A. B. (shrink)

Dealing with Requests for Euthanasia: a Qualitative Study Investigating the Experience of General Practitioners.J.-J. Georges, A. M. The, B. D. Onwuteaka-Philipsen & G. van der Wal - 2008 - Journal of Medical Ethics 34 (3):150-155.
Background: Caring for terminally ill patients is a meaningful task, however the patients suffering can be a considerable burden and cause of frustration. Objectives: The aim of (...) this study is to describe the experiences of general practitioners in The Netherlands in dealing with a request for euthanasia from a terminally ill patient. Methods: The data, collected through in-depth interviews, were analysed according to the constant comparative method. Results: Having to face a request for euthanasia when attempting to relieve a patients suffering was described as a very demanding experience that GPs generally would like to avoid. Nearly half of the GPs strive to avoid euthanasia or physician assisted suicide because it was against their own personal values or because it was emotional burdening to be confronted with this issue. They explained that by being directed on promoting a peaceful dying process, or the quality of end-of-life of a patient by caring and supporting the patient and the relatives it was mainly possible to shorten patients suffering withoutintentionally hastening a patients death on his request”. The other GPs explained that as sometimes the suffering of a patient could not be lessened they were open to consider a patients request for euthanasia or physician assisted suicide. They underlined the importance of a careful decision-making process, based on finding a balance between the necessity to shorten the patients suffering through euthanasia and their personal values. Conclusion: Dealing with requests for euthanasia is very challenging for GPs, although they feel committed to alleviate a patients suffering and to promote a peaceful death. 37. On the Intuitive Understanding of Nonlocality as Implied by Quantum Theory.D. J. Bohm & B. J. Hiley - 1975 - Foundations of Physics 5 (1):93-109.
We bring out the fact that the essential new quality implied by the quantum theory is nonlocality; i.e., that a system cannot be analyzed into parts (...)whose basic properties do not depend on the state of the whole system. This is done in terms of the causal interpretation of the quantum theory, proposed by one of us (D.B.) in 2952, involving the introduction of thequantum potential.” We show that this approach implies a new universal type of description, in which the standard or canonical form is always supersystem-system-subsystem; and this leads to the radically new notion of unbroken wholeness of the entire universe. Finally, we discuss some of the implications of extending these notions to the relativity domain, and in so doing, we indicate a novel concept of time, in terms of which relativity and quantum theory may eventually be brought together.
