  1. Logos and Psyche in the Phaedo.Jesse I. Bailey - 2018 - Lexington Books.
This book offers a new interpretation of the Phaedo, arguing that the central issue of the dialogue is the relation between logos and the defining activity of the soul, which is gathering the multiplicity of phenomena into the intelligible wholes of experience in accord with logos.

    Moral Reasoning "on Hold" During a Competitive Game.Michael J. Reall, Jeffrey J. Bailey & Sharon K. Stoll - 1998 - Journal of Business Ethics 17 (11):1205-1210.
When a person engages in a "game," that person may reason and behave in a manner that is inconsistent with non-game-situation moral reasoning. In this study we measured moral reasoning with the Defining Issues Test (DIT). We then engaged the students in a competitive game and collected accounts of their "reasoning" by having them explain their decisions with a forced choice inventory. The results indicate that there were significant inconsistencies in moral reasoning between non-game and game situations. The implications of (...)

Seizing Control?: The Experience Capture Experiments of Ringley & Mann. [REVIEW]Jane Bailey & Ian Kerr - 2007 - Ethics and Information Technology 9 (2):129-139.
Will the proliferation of devices that provide the continuous archival and retrieval of personal experiences (CARPE) improve control over, access to and the record of collective knowledge as Vannevar Bush once predicted with his futuristic memex? Or is it possible that their increasing ubiquity might pose fundamental risks to humanity, as Donald Norman contemplated in his investigation of an imaginary CARPE device he called the “Teddy”? Through an examination of the webcam experiment of Jenni Ringley and the EyeTap experiments of (...)

Is It Rational to Maximize?: James Wood Bailey.James Wood Bailey - 1998 - Utilitas 10 (2):195-221.
Most versions of utilitarianism depend on the plausibility and coherence of some conceptionof maximizing well-being, but these conceptions have been attacked on various grounds. This paper considers two such contentions. First, it addresses the argument that because goods are plural and incommensurable, maximization is incoherent. It is shown that any conception of incommensurability strong enough to show the incoherence of maximization leads to an intolerable paradox. Several misunderstandings of what maximization requires are also addressed. Second, this paper responds to the (...)

Communicating Environmental Information: Are Marketing Claims on Packaging Misleading? [REVIEW]Michael Jay Polonsky, Judith Bailey, Helen Baker, Christopher Basche, Carl Jepson & Lenore Neath - 1998 - Journal of Business Ethics 17 (3):281-294.
The increased usage of questionable environmental marketing claims has become an issue of concern for academics, policy makers and consumers. Much of the research to date, has focused on the accuracy of environmental claims in advertisements, with the information on product packaging being largely ignored. This study uses a content analysis to examine the environmental information on packaging. More specifically it examines the packaging of the population of dishwashing liquid bottles available in grocery stores in a large city in Australia. (...)

    Utilitarianism, Institutions, and Justice.William Nelson & James Wood Bailey - 2000 - Philosophical Review 109 (1):135.
Utilitarianism is subject to objections of at least three kinds: It is wrong about the nature of the fundamental property in virtue of which wrong acts are wrong. It is self-defeating in the sense that acting as it requires will actually undermine the goal of maximization. The acts it requires are, intuitively, wrong. In the book under review, Bailey replies to objections of all three kinds, but especially to the third.

Functional Activity of the Novel Alzheimer's Amyloid Beta-Peptide Interacting Domain in the APP and BACE1 Promoter Sequences and Implications in Activating Apoptotic Genes and in Amyloidogenesis.J. A. Bailey, B. Maloney, Y. W. Ge & D. K. Lahiri - 2011 - Gene 488:13-22.
Amyloid-beta peptide plaque in the brain is the primary diagnostic criterion of Alzheimer's disease . The physiological role of Abeta are poorly understood. We have previously determined an Abeta interacting domain in the promoters of AD-associated genes . This AbetaID interacts in a DNA sequence-specific manner with Abeta. We now demonstrate novel Abeta activity as a possible transcription factor. Herein, we detected Abeta-chromatin interaction in cell culture by ChIP assay. We observed that human neuroblastoma cells treated with FITC conjugated Abeta1-40 (...)

This book is a rebuttal of the common charge that the moral doctrine of utilitarianism permits horrible acts, justifies unfair distribution of wealth and other social goods, and demands too much of moral agents. Bailey defends utilitarianism by applying central insights of game theory regarding feasible equilibria and evolutionary stability of norms to elaborate an account of institutions that real-world utilitarians would want to foster. With such an account he shows that utilitarianism, while still a useful doctrine for criticizing existing (...)

Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 has been implicated in Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. Here, we demonstrate that overexpression of p25, an activator of cdk5, led to increased levels of BACE1 mRNA and protein in vitro and in vivo. A p25/cdk5 responsive region containing multiple sites for signal transducer and activator of transcription was identified in the BACE1 promoter. STAT3 interacts with the BACE1 promoter, and p25-overexpressing mice had elevated levels of pSTAT3 and BACE1, whereas cdk5-deficient mice had reduced levels. Furthermore, mice with a (...)

    Individual Scapetribing and Responsibility Ascriptions.Jeffrey J. Bailey - 1997 - Journal of Business Ethics 16 (1):47-53.
Individual scapetribing is identified as pointing the finger of blame at organizations (or groups, institutions, and systems) as a means of excusing or inaccurately ascribing responsibility for one's own actions and their consequences. This type of behavior is shown to be related to corporate scape-goating as described by Wilson (1993). The paper addresses responsibility ascriptions and the importance of corporate responsibility as a significantly influential multi-person system.

Intrinsic value is differentiated from extrinsic, And assumed to be an empirical characteristic. Then six definitional hypotheses are introduced as to what "x has intrinsic value" means. Under examination, All collapse but d5. In d5, "x has intrinsic value" means "x is or would be liked or disliked for its own sake." d5's relations to ethical hedonism are next examined. Last, Moore's objection, That what one likes intrinsically, One may believe to be bad or not good if it were to (...)

This study investigated the effect of gender stereotypes on evaluator judgments of unethical behavior. Subjects were working adults who completed a mailed survey in which they evaluated unethical behavior depicted in written scenarios. Sex of the transgressor in the scenarios was manipulated. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses indicated that there are no stable differences in evaluations of men and women across scenarios. These results suggest that evaluators do not hold different standards of ethical behavior for men and women, they do (...)

    Implicit Moral Education in Secondary Schools1.John R. Bailey - 1978 - Journal of Moral Education 8 (1):32-40.
Abstract As a result of a questionnaire administered to Heads and pupils in secondary schools in Lincolnshire, certain differences of perception emerge between heads and pupils concerning areas of school life which implicitly relate to moral education. Heads tend to see their schools as strict, yet claim to have few rules. Pupils want more freedom over uniform, assembly, RE, and games, and more involvement in making rules and appointing prefects. Heads are happy about staff??pupil relationships and the pastoral system, but (...)

Accounting for Female Strategic Variation.J. Michael Bailey - 2000 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 23 (4):589-589.
Gangestad & Simpson's theory accounts for the existence of male strategic variation admirably well, although it does not specify the precise nature of the adaptation linking male developmental stability to strategic pluralism. In contrast, female strategic variation remains elusive. Empirical data suggest that genetic variation partly underlies such variation, but the causes of female strategic differences largely remain unexplained.

Although every dog owner would vouch that dogs are perceptive, cognitive, intuitive and capable of positive emotions/empathy, as indeed substantiated by ethological studies for some time, neurological investigations now corroborate this. These studies show that there exists a striking similarity between dogs and humans in the functioning of the caudate nucleus, and dogs experience positive (...)
