  2. Earth Ways: Framing Geographical Meanings.Gary Backhaus & John Murungi (eds.) - 2004 - Lexington Books.
How do you connect the discipline of anthropology to both philosophy and geography? What about history, sociology, and other applied and theoretical forms of knowledge? In Earth Ways: Framing Geographical Meanings, Gary Backhaus and John Murungi challenge contributors to find the organizing component, or "framings," that enables them to bridge their own work to philosophy and geography. What emerges are truly creative contributions to interdisciplinary thought.

  3. Transformations of Urban and Suburban Landscapes: Perspectives From Philosophy, Geography, and Architecture.Gary Backhaus & John Murungi (eds.) - 2002 - Lexington Books.
The study of landscape and place has become an increasingly fertile realm of inquiry in the humanities and social sciences. In this new book of essays, selected from presentations at the first annual meeting of the Society for Philosophy and Geography, scholars investigate the experiences and meanings that inscribe urban and suburban landscapes. Gary Backhaus and John Murungi bring philosophy and geography into a dialogue with a host of other disciplines to explore a fundamental dialectic: while our collective and (...)

Georg Simmel as an Eidetic Social Scientist.Gary Backhaus - 1998 - Sociological Theory 16 (3):260-281.
The article shows the affinity of Simmel's formal sociology with Husserl's notion of eidetic science. This thesis is demonstrated by the corroboration of Simmel's revision of neo-Kantian epistemology for sociology with Husserl's phenomenology, and the parallel discussion of Simmel and Husserl concerning cognitive levels and exact and morphological eide. Simmel's analysis of dyads is explored as an exemplar of his eidetic insights. An important consequence of this demonstration is the vindication establishing the scientific legitimacy of Simmel's methodology regarding the sociology (...)

Methodenstreit in der Nationalökonomie.Jürgen Backhaus & Reginald Hansen - 2000 - Journal for General Philosophy of Science / Zeitschrift für Allgemeine Wissenschaftstheorie 31 (2):307-336.
Methodenstreit in Economics. This essay offers an account of the Methodenstreit in economics between first Menger and Schmoller and later Max Weber and again Schmoller. It is argued that, for Schmoller, two issues were central; to use economics (widely conceived) as an instrument for economic policy and notably social policy: and to base the science empirically with all the modern methods available. In contrast, the Austrian position had a different view of economics as a science, seeing it more as a (...)

    The Phenomenology of Telephone Space.Gary Backhaus - 1997 - Human Studies 20 (2):203-220.
The temporally immediate transcendence of space through the use of the telephone creates a bi-localized space of interaction. Unique structures of spatial experience are constituted through the intending of spatial sectors in telephonic conversation. In the first section of this paper, six eidetic variations are presented that establish the various ways in which environmental sectors are intended through the intersubjective space of the telephonic medium. The telos of these descriptions is to characterize changes in social praxis that have been made (...)

This volume presents the concept of Ecoscape as spatial interrelations, or spatially patterned processes, that are constitutive of an environment_an ecosystem. Contributors investigate environmental issues concerning the human impact on geohistory, food distribution, genetically modified biota, waste management, scientific mapping, and the rethinking of human identity.

Participatory Improvement of a Template for Informed Consent Documents in Biobank Research - Study Results and Methodological Reflections.Bossert Sabine, Kahrass Hannes, Heinemeyer Ulrike, Prokein Jana & Strech Daniel - 2017 - BMC Medical Ethics 18 (1):78.
For valid informed consent, it is crucial that patients or research participants fully understand all that their consent entails. Testing and revising informed consent documents with the assistance of their addressees can improve their understandability. In this study we aimed at further developing a method for testing and improving informed consent documents with regard to readability and test-readers’ understanding and reactions. We tested, revised, and retested template informed consent documents for biobank research by means of 11 focus group interviews with (...)

Vindication of the Human and Social Science of Kurt H. Wolff.Gary Backhaus - 2003 - Human Studies 26 (3):309-335.
The purpose of this article is to vindicate the viability of Kurt H. Wolff''s methodology of surrender-and-catch for the human and social sciences. The article is divided into three sections. The first section explicates the fundamental significance of surrender-and-catch and Wolff''s motivation for advocating its practice. The second section compares surrender-and-catch with phenomenological methodology as well as objective science and the province of the everyday. The third section illustrates surrender-and-catch through my own practice. In this section I contextualize surrender-and-catch in (...)

With this fourth volume in her Logos and Life series, Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka offers a monumental, comprehensive philosophical system, the likes of which have not been hitherto attempted since the metaphysics of Henri Bergson and Alfred North Whitehead. Certainly, this is the most expansive system to be produced from a phenomenological thinker. Husserl did not bring a system to fruition; Heidegger abandoned his project for the hermeneutic ontology of Dasein; Scheler never gathered together his large scope of ideas; and Merleau-Ponty’s ontology (...)

    Diskussion/Discussion. The Pareto Principle and Policy Analysis.Jürgen Backhaus - 1981 - Analyse & Kritik 3 (2):237-246.
Warren Samuels has suggested that the Pareto Principle, when being used in policy analysis, is limited, selective, and displays a conservative bias. In contrast to this view, in this note it is argued that the Pareto Principle is much less limited than was initially perceived or is generally believed to be the case, that it tends to emphasize inclusiveness instead of selectivity, and that it is more likely to have an innovative instead of a conservative bias.

Complex Dynamics of an SIR Epidemic Model with Saturated Incidence Rate and Treatment.Soovoojeet Jana, Swapan Kumar Nandi & T. K. Kar - 2016 - Acta Biotheoretica 64 (1):65-84.
This paper describes a traditional SIR type epidemic model with saturated infection rate and treatment function. The dynamics of the model is studied from the point of view of stability and bifurcation. Basic reproduction number is obtained and it is shown that the model system may possess a backward bifurcation. The global asymptotic stability of the endemic equilibrium is studied with the help of a geometric approach. Optimal control problem is formulated and solved. Some numerical simulation works are carried out (...)

Tymieniecka’s Phenomenology of Life: The “Imaginatio Creatrix,” Subliminal Passions, and the Moral Sense.G. Backhaus - 2001 - Consciousness and Emotion 2 (1):103-134.
Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka expands the phenomenological study of meanings (sense-bestowal) into an onto-genetic inquiry by grounding it in a phenomenology of life, including the emotional dimension. This phenomenology of life is informed by the empirical sciences and its doctrines parallel the new scientific paradigm of open dynamic systems. Embedded in the dynamics of the real individuation of life forms, human consciousness emerges at a unique station in the evolutionary process. Tymieniecka treats the constitution of sense as a function of life, and (...)

    Hume and the Politics of Reason. [REVIEW]Wilfried K. Backhaus - 1992 - Dialogue 31 (1):65-.
John W. Danfor's position in David Hume and the Politics of Reason is refreshing and insightful but may be disturbing to those holding a more traditional view of Hume. The approach taken is highly accessible to those outside of the narrower circle of Humean scholarship; as well it is challenging to those who specialize in Hume's philosophy. I find that I am in general agreement with the overall thrust of Danford's work, which puts Hume's epistemological interests in the context of (...)

How to Compare Color Sensations in Different Brains.Werner Backhaus - 1999 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 22 (6):944-945.
The qualitative and quantitative properties of color sensations and neuronal color coding are discussed in relation to physiological color exchanges and their evolutionary constraints. Based on the identity mind/matter thesis, additional physical measurements on color sensations are described that will allow us, at least in principle, to compare the qualitative properties of color sensations in different brains.
