    Liberal Citizenship and Civic Friendship.Jason A. Scorza - 2004 - Political Theory 32 (1):85-108.
Aristotle famously argues that friendship can serve as a normative model for the practice of citizenship, and this view has been widely accepted by neo-Aristotelians. Liberals, however, are quick to reject both Aristotle's view of friendship and his view of citizenship. Does this mean that the concept of friendship is politically irrelevant for liberalism? This essay suggests, on the contrary, that the concept of friendship is far from obsolete, even for liberals. Specifically, communicative constraints derived from the norms of friendship, (...)

Notes Toward a Formal Conversation Theory.Gary James Jason - 1980 - Grazer Philosophische Studien 10:119-139.
Dialectic, as commonly approached, is not an analytic study, as the notion is defined in the paper. Where it is analytically approached (as, for example, by Grice and Hamblin), the result is pragmatic in nature, as well as syntactic and semantic. This paper lays the foundations of a purely formal (nonpragmatic) analysis of conversations. This study is accordingly called "Conversation Theory". The key notions of "conversation", "dialogue", "conversation game", "rules of response", "epistemic community" and "channel of informations" are defined precisely, (...)

Does Virtue Epistemology Provide a Better Account of the Ad Hominem Argument? A Reply to Christopher Johnson.Gary James Jason - 2011 - Philosophy 86 (1):95-119.
Christopher Johnson has put forward in this journal the view that ad hominem reasoning may be more generally reasonable than is allowed by writers such as myself, basing his view on virtue epistemology. I review his account, as well as the standard account, of ad hominem reasoning, and show how the standard account would handle the cases he sketches in defense of his own view. I then give four criticisms of his view generally: the problems of virtue conflict, vagueness, conflation (...)

The field of community psychology has focused on individuals' and groups' behavior in interaction with their social contexts, with an emphasis on prevention, early intervention, wellness promotion, and competency development. Over the past few decades, however, community-based applications of the newest research methodologies have not kept pace with the development of theory and methodology with regard to multilevel data collection and analysis. The Handbook of Methodological Approaches to Community-Based Research is intended to aid the community-oriented researcher in learning about and (...)

La ética del voto y el gobierno de los pocos. A propósito de Jason Brennan y John Stuart Mill.Francisco Javier Gil Martín - 2017 - Télos 21 (1):43-71.
In this article Jason Brennan’s arguments about the moral duties relating to our practice of voting are examined. These arguments provide an epistocratic approach of politics and present a conception of abstention at four levels: abstention as a personal choice, as a moral responsibility, as a duty legally enforceable and as an obligation decided by lot. The contrast with John Stuart Mill’s positions helps to highlight the postdemocratic ambivalences and the latent paternalism behind Brennan’s rejection of massive voting and (...)

The Ontological Status of Embryos: A Reply to Jason Morris.Patrick Lee, Christopher Tollefsen & Robert P. George - 2014 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 39 (5):483-504.
In various places we have defended the position that a new human organism, that is, an individual member of the human species, comes to be at fertilization, the union of the spermatozoon and the oocyte. This individual organism, during the ordinary course of embryological development, remains the same individual and does not undergo any further substantial change, unless monozygotic twinning, or some form of chimerism occurs. Recently, in this Journal Jason Morris has challenged our position, claiming that recent findings (...)

By Paul A. Bogaard and Jason Bell. [REVIEW]Aljoscha Berve - 2019 - Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society 54 (3):430-434.
In 1926, John Dewey called Alfred North Whitehead's book Science and the Modern World "the most significant restatement for the general reader of the present relations of science, philosophy and the issues of life which has yet appeared." While within Pragmatism, such praise by Dewey was praise indeed, Whitehead's influence on the philosophical debate waned quickly after his death in 1947, owed mainly to the fact that we had a better text of Plato's Republic than of his magnum opus, Process (...)

Jason, Hypsipyle, and New Fire at Lemnos. A Study in Myth and Ritual.Walter Burkert - 1970 - Classical Quarterly 20 (01):1-.
History of religion, in its beginnings, had to struggle to emancipate itself from classical mythology as well as from theology and philosophy; when ritual was finally found to be the basic fact in religious tradition, the result was a divorce between classicists, treating mythology as a literary device, on the one hand, and specialists in festivals and rituals and their obscure affiliations and origins on the other.

The Relevance of Royce Ed. Kelly A. Parker and Jason Bell.David W. Rodick - 2016 - American Journal of Theology and Philosophy 37 (2):179-182.
We are in the midst of a renascence of Royce. The Relevance of Royce consists of a collection of essays from leading experts on the philosophy of Josiah Royce, demonstrating its relevance to contemporary concerns. The book is divided into two parts: Part I explores the depth of Royce’s thought, while Part II considers its reach. The book is “intended to be an interdisciplinary resource for scholars interested in tracing both the historical importance and the contemporary relevance of Royce’s thought”.Part (...)
