    Civil Society and State: A Historical Review.Venugopal B. Menon & Chinnu Jolly Jerome - 2017 - Tattva - Journal of Philosophy 9 (2):33-42.
The article attempts to trace the evolution of the concept of civil society. Drawing from the work of political philosophers from the classical period, the period of renaissance, scientific revolution, the period of Enlightenment in the 18th century, and ideologies from the Marxist and Gramscian discourses, the article demonstrates the shifts in the meaning and implications of the concept, its relations to public spaces, accountability, governance, normative ideals of state and the relationship between the state and its citizens. The article (...)

    ‘Alii Discunt–Pro Pudor!–A Feminis’: Jerome, Epist. 53.7.1.Neil Adkin - 1994 - Classical Quarterly 44 (2):559-561.
In the letter which initiated his correspondence with Paulinus of Nola Jerome deplores the propensity of the inexpert to pontificate on scripture. Three kinds of incompetence are denounced. The second takes the following form: ‘alii discunt – pro pudor!–a feminis, quod viros doceant’. As in the other two denunciations, Jerome has chosen to express himself in general terms; scholars have nonetheless assumed that here a specific individual is meant. Nautin argued that with these words Jerome was attacking (...)

Jerome on Sinlessness: A Via Media Between Augustine and Pelagius.Stuart Squires - 2016 - Heythrop Journal 57 (4):697-709.
This article will explore Jerome's understanding of sinlessness and will argue that he saw himself just as opposed to Augustine as to Pelagius. I begin by exposing Jerome's context in the Pelagian Controversy. I then expose his understanding of sinlessness. Next, I turn to his arguments in Ep. 133 and the first two books of his Dialogi contra Pelagianos. In book three of that text, we notice a change in his arguments which indicates that Jerome is no (...)

Epidemiologic Causation: Jerome Cornfield’s Argument for a Causal Connection Between Smoking and Lung Cancer.Roger Stanev - 2009 - Humana Mente 3 (9):59-66.
A central issue confronting both philosophers and practitioners in formulating an analysis of causation is the question of what constitutes evidence for a causal association. From the 1950s onward, the biostatistician Jerome Cornfield put himself at the center of a controversial debate over whether cigarette smoking was a causative factor in the incidence of lung cancer. Despite criticisms from distinguished statisticians such as Fisher, Berkson and Neyman, Cornfield argued that a review of the scientific evidence supported the conclusion of (...)

The Crown of Virginity, Paradise Regained: A Study of Jerome’s Ascetic Exegesis in a Selection of His Works.Johanna C. Lamprecht - 2019 - Hts Theological Studies 75 (1).
This article explores, in the first place, Jerome’s creation of pro-virginal propaganda in a selection of his treatises and letters, through the employment of scriptural justification by means of ascetic exegesis and rhetorical strategies. The study focuses, in particular, on his Epistulae 22 and 130, both addressed to virgins, and his treatise Adversus Iovinianum. Jerome interpreted and deployed carefully selected biblical texts and employed classical rhetorical conventions to construct his ascetic ideal mainly based on sexual renunciation. The article (...)

  12. Consoling Heliodorus: A Commentary on Jerome Letter 60.J. H. D. Scourfield - 1992 - Oxford University Press UK.
Jerome is best remembered as the author of the Vulgate translation of the Bible. But he was also an untiring letter-writer. Among the many letters which have survived are several written to friends who have suffered recent bereavement. In the most impressive of these, Letter 60, Jerome consoles Heliodorus, Bishop of Altinum in north-east Italy, on the early death of his young nephew Nepotianus. The letter is composed from a thoroughly Christian perspective; but it belongs to a tradition (...)

    Postfoundationalism and Interdisciplinarity: A Response to Jerome Stone.J. Wentzel Van Huyssteen - 2000 - Zygon 35 (2):427-439.
. In my recent work I argued that the religion and sciencedialogue is most successful when done locally and contextually. However, I also argued against theology's epistemic isolation in a pluralist, postmodern world, and for a postfoundationalist notion of human rationality that reveals the interdisciplinary, public nature of all theological reflection. I now want to explore the possibility that, when we look at what the prehistory of thehuman mind reveals about the biological roots of all human rationality, some forms of (...)

Self-Interest and Moral Philosophy: A Reply to Some Implications of Jerome Moran's ‘Aristotle on Eudaimonia ’.Tim Miles - 2019 - Think 18 (52):87-90.
Moran argues that the ancient Greek philosophers did not really do moral philosophy because they conflated self-regard with other-regard. I argue that on the contrary questions of what is in a person's own interest are moral questions and that self-interest should play a part in moral philosophy.Export citation.
