Cao Feng describes two types of twentieth-century Yang Zhu-related scholarship. “Academic historyis represented by Meng Wentong and Guo Moruo; it focused on textual analysis and (...) largely expanded the network of lineages related to Yang Zhu, reaching into Huang-Lao scholarship. “Intellectual historysince 1949 is represented by Hou Wailu and Liu Zehua. It portrays Yang Zhus thought system in terms of Marxist and post-Marxist ideology, respectively. On Axiomatizations of Public Announcement Logic.Yanjing Wang & Qinxiang Cao - 2013 - Synthese 190 (S1).
In the literature, different axiomatizations of Public Announcement Logic (PAL) have been proposed. Most of these axiomatizations share acore setof the so-calledreduction axioms”. (...)In this paper, by designing non-standard Kripke semantics for the language of PAL, we show that the proof system based on this core set of axioms does not completely axiomatize PAL without additional axioms and rules. In fact, many of the intuitive axioms and rules we took for granted could not be derived from the core set. Moreover, we also propose and advocate an alternative yet meaningful axiomatization of PAL without the reduction axioms. The completeness is proved directly by a detour method using the canonical model where announcements are treated as merely labels for modalities as in normal modal logics. This new axiomatization and its completeness proof may sharpen our understanding of PAL and can be adapted to other dynamic epistemic logics. (shrink)

  20. Signaling in the Brain: In Search of Functional Units.Rosa Cao - 2014 - Philosophy of Science 81 (5):891-901.
What are the functional units of the brain? If the function of the brain is to process information-carrying signals, then the functional units will be the (...)senders and receivers of those signals. Neurons have been the default candidate, with action potentials as the signals. But there are alternatives: synapses fit the action potential picture more cleanly, and glial activities (e.g., in astrocytes) might also be characterized as signaling. Are synapses or nonneuronal cells better candidates to play the role of functional units? Will informational signaling still be the best model for brain function if we move beyond the neuron doctrine? (shrink)

Retraction: TheOther Faceof Research Collaboration?Li Tang, Guangyuan Hu, Yang Sui, Yuhan Yang & Cong Cao - 2020 - Science and Engineering Ethics 26 (3):1681-1708.
The last two decades have witnessed the rising prevalence of both co-publishing and retraction. Focusing on research collaboration, this paper utilizes a unique dataset to investigate (...)factors contributing to retraction probability and elapsed time between publication and retraction. Data analysis reveals that the majority of retracted papers are multi-authored and that repeat offenders are collaboration prone. Yet, all things being equal, collaboration, in and of itself, does not increase the likelihood of producing flawed or fraudulent research, at least in the form of retraction. That holds for all retractions and also retractions due to falsification, fabrication, and plagiarism. The research also finds that publications with authors from elite universities are less likely to be retracted, which is particularly true for retractions due to FFP. China stands out with the fastest retracting speed compared to other countries. Possible explanations, limitations, and policy implications are also discussed. (shrink)

Experiment Investigation and Numerical Simulation of Snowdrift on a Typical Large-Span Retractable Roof.Zhenggang Cao, Mengmeng Liu & Pengcheng Wu - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-14.
Retractable roofs are commonly used in designing large-span stadiums because of their versatility. However, retractable roofs are subject to sudden changes in shape, and thus, factors (...)in addition to those considered for conventional roofs need to be taken into account. In particular, retractable roofs are considerably more sensitive to snow loads because their shapes are complex, and snowdrift on roofs may lead to difficulties for the operating of retractable roofs. To investigate the distribution of snow on retractable roofs, this study proposes a method based on a numerical simulation of snowdrift obtained using the EulerEuler method in multiphase flow theory. This numerical model employs a mixture model by using the commercial computational fluid dynamics software FLUENT. A suitable turbulence model is selected for the simulation through verification against two-dimensional data obtained from field measurements reported in previous studies. However, the snow load on retractable roofs cannot be determined by a 2D distribution easily. The accuracy of predicting the overall distribution of snow load on roofs was verified by experiments conducted on a horizontally retractable roof. The results show that a nonuniform snow distribution on such roofs is distinct and should be considered. (shrink)

Mandatory Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Reporting and Financial Reporting Quality: Evidence From a Quasi-Natural Experiment.Xue Wang, Feng Cao & Kangtao Ye - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 152 (1):253-274.
This study examines the impact of mandatory Corporate Social Responsibility reporting on firmsfinancial reporting quality using a quasi-natural experiment in China that mandates a subset (...)of firms to report their CSR activities starting in 2008. We find that mandatory CSR disclosure firms constrain earnings management after the policy. The result is robust to a battery of sensitivity tests and more prominent for firms with lower analyst coverage. Further analyses reveal that upward earnings management by mandatory disclosure firms is more likely to be caught after the policy. The findings suggest that mandatory CSR disclosure mitigates information asymmetry by improving financial reporting quality. (shrink)

Geologic Characterization of a Lower Cambrian Marine Shale: Implications for Shale Gas Potential in Northwestern Hunan, South China.Zhenghui Xiao, Jisong Liu, Jingqiang Tan, Rongfeng Yang, Jason Hilton, Ping Zhou, Zhaohui Wang & Yunjiang Cao - 2018 - Interpretation: SEG 6 (3):T635-T647.
We have investigated the geologic features of the lower Cambrian-aged Niutitang Shale in the northwestern Hunan province of South China. Our results indicate that the Niutitang (...)Shale has abundant and highly mature algal kerogen with total organic carbon content ranging from 0.6% to 18.2%. The equivalent vitrinite reflectance value is between 2.5% and 4.3%. Mineral constituents are dominated by quartz and clay. The average quartz content is much higher than that of clay minerals, and this suggests a high brittleness index. Organic-matter pores, interparticle pores, intraparticle pores, interlaminated fractures, and structural fractures are all well developed. The porosity ranges from 0.6% to 8.8%, with an average of 4.8%, whereas the permeability varies from 0.0018 to [Formula: see text]. The porosity of TOC- and clay-rich shale samples is generally higher than that of quartz-rich shale samples. The gas adsorption capacity of the Niutitang Shale varies from 2.26 to [Formula: see text], with a mean value of [Formula: see text]. The TOC content appears to significantly influence gas adsorption capacity. In general, TOC-rich samples exhibit a much higher adsorption capacity than TOC-poor samples. (shrink)
