A Reconsideration of the Characteristics of Song-Ming Li Xue.Chunfeng Jin - 2010 - Frontiers of Philosophy in China 5 (3):352-376.
By analyzing Zhu Xi and Zhang Zai’s three representative explanatory paradigms—that of Feng Youlan, Mou Zongsan and Zhang Dainian, the paper tries to show that studying (...) Chinese philosophy in a Western way and emphasizing logical consistency will unavoidably lead to the defects of simplicity and partiality. In addition to Buddhism and Daoism, Song-Ming philosophy had also absorbed thoughts from the Pre-Qin, Han, Wei and Jin dynasties. The existence of multiple philosophical thoughts and their new synthesis lead to internal contradictions in Song-Ming philosophy and Li Xue 理学 (Neo-Confucianism in the Song and Ming dynasties). The contradiction between the doctrine of tiandao 天道 (the way in which the world runs) and that of xinxing 心性 (mind and human nature) was even sharper. Li Xue and Xin Xue also overlapped one another. The transition from the doctrine of tiandao to that of xinxing was a long journey. It was begun by Zhu Xi in his later years, and was finally completed by Wang Yangming. Unveiling the complexity and special characteristics of Song-Ming philosophy is a task for scholars on the history of Chinese philosophy. (shrink)

British Cultural Studies, Active Audiences and the Status of Cultural Theory.Huimin Jin - 2011 - Theory, Culture and Society 28 (4):124-144.
British cultural studies, represented perhaps chiefly by the so-called Birmingham School, is much marked by its strong orientation towards the application of grounded theory in the (...)analysis of concrete cases, rather than the development of abstract Theory with a Capital T . As a leading figure of the Birmingham School and a key representative of the active audience model in television studies, or broadly, media studies, David Morley stands at a point where this trend was set, as is evidenced in this interview. Questioned by Huimin Jin, Morley puts his audience studies into the contexts of British cultural studies, postmodernism, Marxism, social movements, and so on; and in doing so, he shows the ambiguity, and subtlety of his concepts of how to best theorize the active audience. Only by this method, Jin believes, could Morley launch his version of audience studies, which aims not to invent a general theory of media effects, but to use an interdisciplinary range of theories to explore how people actually respond to a TV programme; and only by this approach to audience studies, furthermore, could Morley develop a theory of the audiences activity, which is embedded in the course of their everyday life and that cannot be thoroughly colonized by discourses. Cultural studies, wherever it is conducted, therefore, Morley suggests, has to construct modes of analysis that are relevant to its own conditions of production in a particular place, at a particular time. This is the tradition, as we know it, but also the future, as Morley envisages, of cultural studies. (shrink)

    A Theorem on the Isomorphism Property.Renling Jin - 1992 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 57 (3):1011-1017.
An L-structure is called internally presented in a nonstandard universe if its base set and interpretation of every symbol in L are internal. A nonstandard universe (...)is said to satisfy the κ-isomorphism property if for any two internally presented L-structures U and B, where L has less than κ many symbols, U is elementarily equivalent to B implies that U is isomorphic to B. In this paper we prove that the ℵ1-isomorphism property is equivalent to the ℵ0-isomorphism property plus ℵ1-saturation. (shrink)

Density Matrix in Quantum Mechanics and Distinctness of Ensembles Having the Same Compressed Density Matrix.Gui Lu Long, Yi-Fan Zhou, Jia-Qi Jin, Yang Sun & Hai-Woong Lee - 2006 - Foundations of Physics 36 (8):1217-1243.
We clarify different definitions of the density matrix by proposing the use of different names, the full density matrix for a single-closed quantum system, the compressed (...)density matrix for the averaged single molecule state from an ensemble of molecules, and the reduced density matrix for a part of an entangled quantum system, respectively. We show that ensembles with the same compressed density matrix can be physically distinguished by observing fluctuations of various observables. This is in contrast to a general belief that ensembles with the same compressed density matrix are identical. Explicit expression for the fluctuation of an observable in a specified ensemble is given. We have discussed the nature of nuclear magnetic resonance quantum computing. We show that the conclusion that there is no quantum entanglement in the current nuclear magnetic resonance quantum computing experiment is based on the unjustified belief that ensembles having the same compressed density matrix are identical physically. Related issues in quantum communication are also discussed. (shrink)

From Time Inversion to Nonlinear QED.Wei Min Jin - 2000 - Foundations of Physics 30 (11):1943-1973.
In Minkowski flat space-time, it is perceived that time inversion is unitary rather than antiunitary, with energy being a time vector changing sign under time inversion. (...)The Dirac equation, in the case of electromagnetic interaction, is not invariant under unitary time inversion, giving rise to aKlein paradox.” To render unitary time inversion invariance, a nonlinear wave equation is constructed, in which theKlein paradoxdisappears. In the case of Coulomb interaction, the revised nonlinear equation can be linearized to give energy solutions for Hydrogen-like ions without singularity when nuclear number Z>137, showing a reversed energy order pending for experimental tests such as Zeeman effects. In non-relativistic limit, this nonlinear equation reduces to nonlinear Schrödinger equation with soliton-like solutions. Moreover, particle conjugation and electron-proton scattering with a nonsingular current-potential interaction are discussed. Finally the explicit form of gauge function is found, the uniqueness of Lorentz gauge is proven and the Lagrangian density of quantum electrodynamics (QED) is revised as well. The implementation of unitary time inversion leads to the ultimate derivation of nonlinear QED. (shrink)

The Differences Between Kurepa Trees and Jech-Kunen Trees.Renling Jin - 1993 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 32 (5):369-379.
By an ω1 we mean a tree of power ω1 and height ω1. An ω1-tree is called a Kurepa tree if all its levels are countable (...)and it has more than ω1 branches. An ω1-tree is called a Jech-Kunen tree if it has κ branches for some κ strictly between ω1 and $2^{\omega _1 }$ . In Sect. 1, we construct a model ofCH plus $2^{\omega _1 } > \omega _2$ , in which there exists a Kurepa tree with not Jech-Kunen subtrees and there exists a Jech-Kunen tree with no Kurepa subtrees. This improves two results in [Ji1] by not only eliminating the large cardinal assumption for [Ji1, Theorem 2] but also handling two consistency proofs of [Ji1, Theorem 2 and Theorem 3] simultaneously. In Sect. 2, we first prove a lemma saying that anAxiom A focing of size ω1 over Silver's model will not produce a Kurepa tree in the extension, and then we apply this lemma to prove that, in the model constructed for Theorem 2 in [Ji1], there exists a Jech-Kunen tree and there are no Kurepa trees. Type two cuts, bad cuts and very bad cuts are introduced in [10] for studying the relationship between Loeb measure and U-topology of a hyperfinite time (...)line in an ω 1 -saturated nonstandard universe. In this paper we answer, fully or partially, some of those questions by showing that: (1) type two cuts exist, (2) the 1 -isomorphism property implies that bad cuts exist, but no bad cuts are very bad. Cuts in Hyperfinite Time Lines.Renling Jin - 1992 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 57 (2):522-527.
In an ω1-saturated nonstandard universe a cut is an initial segment of the hyperintegers which is closed under addition. Keisler and Leth in [KL] introduced, for (...)each given cut U, a corresponding U-topology on the hyperintegers by letting O be U-open if for any xO there is a y greater than all the elements in U such that the interval $\lbrack x - y, x + y\rbrack \subseteq O$ . Let U be a cut in a hyperfinite time line H, which is a hyperfinite initial segment of the hyperintegers. U is called a good cut if there exists a U-meager subset of H of Loeb measure one. Otherwise U is bad. In this paper we discuss the questions of Keisler and Leth about the existence of bad cuts and related cuts. We show that assuming $\mathbf{b} > \omega_1$, every hyperfinite time line has a cut with both cofinality and coinitiality uncountable. We construct bad cuts in a nonstandard universe under ZFC. We also give two results about the existence of other kinds of cuts. (shrink)

    U-Lusin Sets in Hyperfinite Time Lines.Renling Jin - 1992 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 57 (2):528-533.
A subset B of H is called a U-Lusin set in H if B is uncountable and for any Loeb-Borel U-meager subset X of H, BX is countable. Here a Loeb-Borel set is an element of the σ-algebra generated by all internal subsets of H. In this paper we answer some questions of Keisler and Leth about the existence of U-Lusin sets by proving the following facts. (1) If $U = x/\mathbb{N} = \{y \in \mathscr{H}: \forall n \in \mathbb{N}(y < x/n)\}$ for some xH, then there exists a U-Lusin set of power κ if and only if there exists a Lusin set of the reals of power κ. (2) If Ux/N but the coinitiality of U is ω, then there are no U-Lusin sets if CH fails. (3) Under ZFC there exists a nonstandard universe in which U-Lusin sets exist for every cut U with uncountable cofinality and coinitiality. (4) In any ω2-saturated nonstandard universe there are no U-Lusin sets for all cuts U except U = x/N. (shrink)

    U-Monad Topologies of Hyperfinite Time Lines.Renling Jin - 1992 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 57 (2):534-539.
The U-monad topology of H is the quotient topology of the U-topological space H modulo U. In this paper we answer a question of Keisler and Leth about the U-monad topologies by showing that when H is κ-saturated and has cardinality κ, (1) if the coinitiality of U1 is uncountable, then the U1-monad topology and the U2-monad topology are homeomorphic iff both U1 and U2 have the same coinitiality; and (2) H can produce exactly three different U-monad topologies (up to homeomorphism) for those U's with countable coinitiality. As a corollary H can produce exactly four different U-monad topologies if the cardinality of H is ω1. (shrink)

Existence of Some Sparse Sets of Nonstandard Natural Numbers.Renling Jin - 2001 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 66 (2):959-973.
    Answers are given to two questions concerning the existence of some sparse subsets of $\mathscr{H} = \{0, 1,..., H - 1\} \subseteq * \mathbb{N}$ , where H is (...)a hyperfinite integer. In § 1, we answer a question of Kanovei by showing that for a given cut U in H, there exists a countably determined set $X \subseteq \mathscr{H}$ which contains exactly one element in each U-monad, if and only if U = a · N for some $a \in \mathscr{H} \backslash \{0\}$ . In §2, we deal with a question of Keisler and Leth in [6]. We show that there is a cut $V \subseteq \mathscr{H}$ such that for any cut U, (i) there exists a U-discrete set $X \subseteq \mathscr{H}$ with X + X = H (mod H) provided $U \subsetneqq V$ , (ii) there does not exist any U-discrete set $X \subseteq \mathscr{H}$ with X + X = H (mod H) provided $\supsetneqq V$ . We obtain some partial results for the case U = V. (shrink)
