A Reconsideration of the Characteristics of Song-Ming Li Xue.Chunfeng Jin - 2010 - Frontiers of Philosophy in China 5 (3):352-376.
By analyzing Zhu Xi and Zhang Zai’s three representative explanatory paradigms—that of Feng Youlan, Mou Zongsan and Zhang Dainian, the paper tries to show that studying Chinese philosophy in a Western way and emphasizing logical consistency will unavoidably lead to the defects of simplicity and partiality. In addition to Buddhism and Daoism, Song-Ming philosophy had also absorbed thoughts from the Pre-Qin, Han, Wei and Jin dynasties. The existence of multiple philosophical thoughts and their new synthesis lead to internal contradictions in (...)

British Cultural Studies, Active Audiences and the Status of Cultural Theory.Huimin Jin - 2011 - Theory, Culture and Society 28 (4):124-144.
British cultural studies, represented perhaps chiefly by the so-called Birmingham School, is much marked by its strong orientation towards the application of grounded theory in the analysis of concrete cases, rather than the development of abstract Theory with a Capital T . As a leading figure of the Birmingham School and a key representative of the active audience model in television studies, or broadly, media studies, David Morley stands at a point where this trend was set, as is evidenced in (...)

Brittleness Evaluation of Resource Plays by Integrating Petrophysical and Seismic Data Analysis.Bo Zhang, Tao Zhao, Xiaochun Jin & Kurt J. Marfurt - 2015 - Interpretation: SEG 3 (2):T81-T92.
The main considerations for well planning and hydraulic fracturing in unconventional resources plays include the amount of total organic carbon and how much hydrocarbon can be extracted. Brittleness is the direct measurement of a formation about the ability to create avenues for hydrocarbons when applying hydraulic fracturing. Brittleness can be directly estimated from laboratory stress-strain measurements, rock-elastic properties, and mineral content analysis using petrophysical analysis on well logs. However, the estimated brittleness using these methods only provides “cylinder” estimates near the (...)

Spatiotemporal Evolution of Population in Northeast China During 2012–2017: A Nighttime Light Approach.Haolin You, Cui Jin & Wei Sun - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-12.
Population is one of the key problematic factors that are restricting China’s economic and social development. Previous studies have used nighttime light imagery to calculate population density. This study analyzes the spatiotemporal evolution of the population in Northeast China based on linear regression analyses of NPP-VIIRS NTL imagery and statistical population data from 36 cities in Northeast China from 2012 to 2017. Based on a comparison of the estimation results in different years, we observed the following. The population of Northeast (...)

Fuzzy Boost Classifier of Decision Experts for Multicriteria Group Decision-Making.Xiao-yi Wang, Yi Yang, Yu-Ting Bai, Jia-bin Yu, Zhi-yao Zhao & Xue-bo Jin - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-10.
The expert is a vital role in multicriteria decision-making, which provides source decision opinions. In the existing group decision-making activities, the selection of experts is usually conducted artificially, which relies on personal subjective experience. It has been the urgent demand for an automatic selection of experts, which can help to determine their weights for the follow-up decision calculation. In this paper, an expert classification method is proposed to solve the problem. First, the CatBoost classification algorithm is improved by integrating the (...)

As it has become more and more urgent to solve the problems of environmental protection, we consider it necessary to conduct multilevel studies to examine the impact of business strategy on both employees’ and firms’ performances in environmental protection. Synthesizing the perspectives of strategic orientation, corporate strategy, and firm performance, we propose a comprehensive theoretical model linking market orientation and environmental performance. Based on a survey of 134 matched chief executive officers, senior marketing managers and frontline workers from Chinese firms, (...)

An Integer Construction of Infinitesimals: Toward a Theory of Eudoxus Hyperreals.Alexandre Borovik, Renling Jin & Mikhail G. Katz - 2012 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 53 (4):557-570.
A construction of the real number system based on almost homomorphisms of the integers $\mathbb {Z}$ was proposed by Schanuel, Arthan, and others. We combine such a construction with the ultrapower or limit ultrapower construction to construct the hyperreals out of integers. In fact, any hyperreal field, whose universe is a set, can be obtained by such a one-step construction directly out of integers. Even the maximal (i.e., On -saturated) hyperreal number system described by Kanovei and Reeken (2004) and independently (...)

Darwinian ideas were developed and radically transformed when they were transmitted to the alien intellectual background of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century China. The earliest references to Darwin in China appeared in the 1870s through the writings of Western missionaries who provided the Chinese with the earliest information on evolutionary doctrines. Meanwhile, Chinese ambassadors, literati and overseas students contributed to the dissemination of evolutionary ideas, with modest effect. The ‘evolutionary sensation’ in China was generated by the Chinese Spencerian Yan Fu’s (...)

Revisiting the Bright and Dark Sides of Capital Flows in Business Groups.Joseph P. H. Fan, Li Jin & Guojian Zheng - 2016 - Journal of Business Ethics 134 (4):509-528.
Prior studies report that the business group structure and the associated intra-group capital flows are prone to conflicts of interest between controlling shareholders and minority investors. Yet business group is a prevalent and stable structure around the globe, particularly where capital markets are underdeveloped. Using data from China, this paper empirically studies the trade-off between the negative and positive roles played by intra-group capital flows and tests the efficiency implications of such trade-off. We find that from the perspective of the (...)

In this article, we report on a three-pronged effort to create a hypothetical learning progression for quantification in science. First, we drew from history and philosophy of science to define the quantification competency and develop hypothetical levels of the learning progression. More specifically, the quantification competency refers to the ability to analyze phenomena through abstracting relevant measurable variables from phenomena and observations, investigating the mathematical relationships among the variables, and conceptualizing scientific ideas that explain the mathematical relationships. The quantification learning (...)

A novel four-dimensional energy, economic, and environmental under energy reduction constraints chaotic system is proposed. The acquisition of environmental quality data is the key to this paper. During the course of the study, we used Bayesian estimation algorithm to calibrate the environmental quality. Based on the official data, the Levenberg–Marquardt backpropagation neural network method was optimized by genetic algorithm to effectively identify the parameters in the 3E system. The research results show that although increasing energy reduction inputs can improve environmental (...)

This study is an extension of our recent ethics research in direct marketing and information technology. In this study, we investigated the relationships among core organizational values, organizational ethics, corporate social responsibility, and organizational performance outcome. Our analysis of online survey responses from a sample of IT professionals in the United States indicated that managers from organizations with organic core values reported a higher level of social responsibility relative to managers in organizations with mechanistic values; that managers in both mechanistic (...)

The power load prediction is significant in a sustainable power system, which is the key to the energy system’s economic operation. An accurate prediction of the power load can provide a reliable decision for power system planning. However, it is challenging to predict the power load with a single model, especially for multistep prediction, because the time series load data have multiple periods. This paper presents a deep hybrid model with a serial two‐level decomposition structure. First, the power load data (...)

In Industry 4.0, many manufacturers have built smart factories by ICTs, and simulation is one of the core technologies for smart manufacturing. Various kinds of simulations, depending on system levels, such as assembly line, logistics, worker, and process, are utilized for smart manufacturing. Manufacturers own heterogeneous simulations; however, they have difficulty integrating and interoperating them. This paper proposes a novel simulation framework for smart manufacturing based on the concept of live, virtual, and constructive simulation. The LVC interoperation provides a synthetic (...)

This paper answers some questions of D. Ross in [R]. In § 1, we show that some consequences of the ℵ0- or ℵ1-special model axiom in [R] cannot be proved by the κ-isomorphism property for any cardinal κ. In § 2, we show that with one exception, the ℵ0-isomorphism property does imply the remaining consequences of the special model axiom in [R]. In § 3, we improve a result in [R] by showing that the κ-special model axiom is equivalent to (...)
