  27. Unearthing the Changes: Recently Discovered Manuscripts of the Yi Jing and Related Texts.Edward L. Shaughnessy - 2014 - Cambridge University Press.
In recent years, three ancient manuscripts relating to the _Yi jin_g, or _Classic of Changes_, have been discovered. The earliest--the Shanghai Museum Zhou Yi--dates to about 300 B.C.E. and shows evidence of the text's original circulation. The _Guicang_, or _Returning to Be Stored_, reflects another ancient Chinese divination tradition based on hexagrams similar to those of the _Yi jing_. In 1993, two manuscripts were found in a third-century B.C.E. tomb at Wangjiatai that contain almost exact parallels to the _Guicang_'s early (...)

How to Talk About Physical Reality? Other Models, Other Questions.Benjamin B. Olshin - 2014 - Journal of Philosophy and Culture 5 (1).
Investigating the nature of our apparent physical reality is a profound challenge. Our models from physics, while powerful, do not treat reality per se. The famous painter Paul Gaugin articulated the relevant existential questions famously in a grand painting - questions that also give the painting its title: D’où venons-nous? Que sommes-nous? Où allons-nous? People of religious faith, of course, assume that one can know the ultimate truth of reality, and, then, know the answers to these questions. But even in (...)

Ji Kang was a noted thinker, man of letters, and musician of the period of the Three Kingdoms and of the state of Cao-Wei. His thought possessed very salient characteristics of the spirit of those times. Since the decline of the Han dynasty, owing to the turmoil of the society and internal developments within Chinese thought, the classical scholarship [jing xue] of the earlier and latter Han dynasties had gradually but steadily begun to lose its role and ability to maintain (...)

During the first centuries of our age, the decadence of the Han government contributed to a society receptive to salvific ideas and in turn, favored the advent of millenialist movements. These organizations, with its values well rotted in Daoist cosmology, would develop a new discourse around the ideas of moral and social responsibility, would install a personified source of authority in the figure of the master and would propose a critical alternative to the prevailing Confucian orthodoxy. In this paper I (...)

    Death and Help Expected From Nurses When Dying.Fu-Jin Shih, Meei-Ling Gau, Yaw-Sheng Lin, Suang-Jing Pong & Hung-Ru Lin - 2006 - Nursing Ethics 13 (4):360-375.
This project was undertaken to ascertain the perceptions of a group of Taiwan’s fourth-year bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) students regarding death and help expected from nurses during the dying process. Within the Chinese culture, death is one of the most important life issues. However, in many Chinese societies it is difficult for people to reveal their deepest feelings to their significant others or loved ones. It was in this context that this project was developed because little is known (...)

The present article intends at shedding some light on how Voltaire's Candide enacts its criticism of the Leibnizian system. In order to do that, we shall follow different paths. Firstly, we will consider a brief history of the problem of evil, especially the Bayle and Leibniz debate on it. Secondly, we shall briefly refer to Voltaire's metaphysics of evil. The almost forty years he dedicated to the question are not monotonous, they are constituted of variations, approximations and criticisms on both (...)

In Geneva, since the beginning of pre-service secondary teacher training at university, two different types of students in teacher preparation coexist: some of them have got part-time classes, others have no teaching assignment. In an introduction to the teaching profession, students from different disciplines of the two types take a course on the same sources of professional knowledge. By analyzing the representations of the teaching profession, we find that the process of construction of their professional identity varies according to whether (...)

: Jing (respect) in ancient Confucianism can be seen as referring to either a frame of mind or an intentional state that includes the elements of singlemindedness, concentration, seriousness, caution, and a strong sense of responsibility. Hence, it can be seen as a due regard based on the perception of the worth of its object. It is the central element and the germ of li (ritual). A critical comparison is made between jing and the ideas of appraisal respect, recognition respect, (...)

Composed more than 2,000 years ago during a turbulent period of Chinese history, the Dao de jing set forth an alternative vision of reality in a world torn apart by violence and betrayal. Daoism, as this subtle but enduring philosophy came to be known, offers a comprehensive view of experience grounded in a full understanding of the wonders hidden in the ordinary. Now in this luminous new translation, based on the recently discovered ancient bamboo scrolls, China scholars Roger T. Ames (...)

    Be-Ing and Non-Be-Ing in the Dao De Jing.Jing Liu - 2017 - Asian Philosophy 27 (2):85-99.
This essay questions the meaning of be-ing and non-be-ing in the DDJ with regard to the root-source meaning of dao. I first explore the meaning of dao as the dark non-be-ing, revealing the connotations of the distinction between dao and things by comparison with some forms of Western metaphysics. The meaning of non-be-ing is elaborated in terms of the dynamic meanings of xu 虚 and chong 沖; The play between be-ing and non-be-ing is explored through the lens of yin and (...)

    Wei‐Jin Period Xuanxue ‘Neo‐Daoism’: Re‐Working the Relationship Between Confucian and Daoist Themes.Paul J. D'Ambrosio - 2016 - Philosophy Compass 11 (11):621-631.
In recent years, philosophical ideas developed during the Wei-Jin period, broadly referred to as xuanxue in Chinese and ‘Neo-Daoism’ or ‘Dark Learning’ in English, have been accorded increasing attention in academia. This article provides an introduction to some major thinkers of the Wei-Jin period, addressing both their original writings and recent scholarly interpretations. The article aims to demonstrate that many Wei-Jin period intellectuals formed their theories through reinterpreting the relationship between texts associated with Daoism and Confucianism. Thinkers of this period (...)
