Symposium on Public Health Law Surveillance: The Nexus of Information Technology and Public Health Law.Angela McGowan, Michael Schooley, Helen Narvasa, Jocelyn Rankin & Daniel M. Sosin - 2003 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 31 (S4):41-42.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s goal is to develop a surveillance system of public health laws that would both support research and analysis among policymakers and legislators, and support the scientific basis for public health law. This session was convened, in part, to discuss the value of creating an electronic system to track public health legal information. Public health surveillance is the “ongoing, systematic collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of data regarding a health-related event for use in public (...)

  4. Mind Wandering as Diffuse Attention.Jocelyn Yuxing Wang & Azenet L. López - manuscript
This paper reconciles an inconsistency between the benefits of mind wandering and a prominent conception of attention in philosophy and cognitive psychology, namely, the prioritization view. Since we prioritize the information in a task less if we are doing it while mind wandering compared to solely concentrating on it, why does our performance in the task sometimes improve when we are mind wandering? To explain this, we offer a conception of diffuse attention that generalizes from external to internal forms of (...)

Toward a contextual realism.Jocelyn Benoist - 2021 - Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard University Press.
Esteemed philosopher Jocelyn Benoist argues for a renewed realism that takes seriously the context in which intention occurs. "What there is"-the traditional subject of metaphysics-can be determined only in context, Benoist contends, carving out a new path that rejects acontextual ontologies and approaches to the mind.

    Time orientations and emotion-rules in finance.Jocelyn Pixley - 2009 - Theory and Society 38 (4):383-400.
This article explores how Anglo-American financial firms since the 1980s have operated and acted in an increasingly deregulated, risky, and uncertain arena. I look at these firms and their actions with a particular focus on “temporality” and requisite “emotion-rules,” where variations in emotion-rules correspond with organizational definitions of uncertainty. Firms impose specific emotion-rules, depending on national policies, official duties, and interpretations of each risk. In finance, caveat emptor (i.e., buyer or lender distrust) is an emotion-rule set in screening policies and (...)

Secularism and Freedom of Conscience.Jocelyn Maclure & Charles Taylor - 2011 - Cambridge, MA, USA: Harvard University Press.
Jocelyn Maclure and Charles Taylor provide a clearly reasoned, articulate account of the two main principles of secularism—equal respect, and freedom of conscience—and argue that in our religiously diverse, politically interconnected world, secularism, properly understood, may offer the only path to religious and philosophical freedom.

  15. AI Ethics' Institutional Turn.Jocelyn Maclure & Alexis Morin-Martel - 2025 - Digital Society 4.
Over the last few years, various public, private, and NGO entities have adopted a staggering number of non-binding ethical codes to guide the development of artificial intelligence. However, this seemingly failed to drive better ethical practices within AI organizations. In light of this observation, this paper aims to reevaluate the roles the ethics of AI can play to have a meaningful impact on the development and implementation of AI systems. In doing so, we challenge the notion that AI ethics should (...)

Classics by Design: H of H Playbook and The Trojan Women: A Comic in Art and Commerce.Patrice Rankine - 2023 - Classical Antiquity 42 (2):263-270.
This essay investigates the linguistic, artistic, and typographical dimensions of Anne Carson’s H of H Playbook and Trojan Women by Euripides: A Comedy. I argue that graphic design and design-thinking principles provide a useful and unexplored theoretical framework for deciphering these books, given the often-complex relationship in them between image and words, and sometimes even words presented in different typeface and handwriting. Carson worked in graphic design for a time, and as a poet, words – and metaphor, specifically – are (...)

Control and professional development: are teachers being deskilled or reskilled within the context of decentralization?Jocelyn L. N. Wong - 2006 - Educational Studies 32 (1):17-37.
Many researchers have identified a process they call ‘deskilling’, which they use to describe the daily experience of teachers who have been gradually losing control of their own labour within ‘low‐trust’ workplaces. Conversely, other scholars have found that under similar conditions, some teachers have their own ways of dealing with it which leads them towards a process of ‘reskilling’. This study is an attempt to explore the actual teachers’ perceptions towards their daily practice within the context of educational decentralization, a (...)

Business Ethics and the Decision to Adopt Golden Parachute Contracts: Empirical Evidence of Concern for All Stakeholders.Jocelyn D. Evans & Frank Hefner - 2009 - Journal of Business Ethics 86 (1):65-79.
Golden parachutes are often viewed as a form of excessive compensation because they provide senior management with substantial payouts following an acquisition while other stakeholders are subjected to layoffs, disrupted business relationships and other negative externalities. Using a sample of S&P 500 firms, an economic and ethical justification for this type of contract is given. Golden parachutes ensure effective corporate governance that, in turn, preserve the firm's value for all stakeholders. Boards of directors enter into parachute agreements to protect recently (...)

The Idea and the Practice of Prison Abolition.Jocelyn Simonson - forthcoming - Criminal Law and Philosophy:1-13.
Abolitionist theory combines both ideas and struggle into a vision for a better world. This review of Tommie Shelby’s book “The Idea of Prison Abolition” argues that Shelby’s critique of prison abolition separates out philosophical ideas from those born of struggle, and by doing so, necessarily sells the idea of prison abolition short. Using two examples of abolitionist on-the-ground practices connected to the work of Angela Davis--community bail funds and collective defense campaigns--this review argues that the collective work of experimenting (...)

Race-Specific Perceptual Discrimination Improvement Following Short Individuation Training With Faces.Rankin W. McGugin, James W. Tanaka, Sophie Lebrecht, Michael J. Tarr & Isabel Gauthier - 2011 - Cognitive Science 35 (2):330-347.
This study explores the effect of individuation training on the acquisition of race-specific expertise. First, we investigated whether practice individuating other-race faces yields improvement in perceptual discrimination for novel faces of that race. Second, we asked whether there was similar improvement for novel faces of a different race for which participants received equal practice, but in an orthogonal task that did not require individuation. Caucasian participants were trained to individuate faces of one race (African American or Hispanic) and to make (...)

Eighteenth-Century Magazine Illustration and Copper Plates Coloured from Nature.Jocelyn Anderson - 2020 - Lumen: Selected Proceedings From the Canadian Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies 39:79-111.
In the second half of the eighteenth century, as the magazine publishing industry grew, illustrations became a fundamental element of magazines, and some of the most ambitious publishers began offering readers coloured illustrations. This article examines a series of coloured illustrations published in The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure. Launched in 1752, this series depicts subjects from natural history, including birds, animals, and plants. These plates were a critical vehicle in adapting and circulating elite scientific publications to a wide (...)

The lever as instrument of reason: technological constructions of knowledge around 1800.Jocelyn Holland - 2019 - New York: Bloomsbury Academic.
The lever appears to be a very simple object, a tool used since ancient times for the most primitive of tasks: to lift and to balance. Why, then, were prominent intellectuals active around 1800 in areas as diverse as science, philosophy, and literature inspired to think and write about levers? In The Lever as Instrument of Reason, readers will discover the remarkable ways in which the lever is used to model the construction of knowledge and to mobilize new ideas among (...)

I carried out two separate analyses. Standard regression analysis of 21 mother/daughter dyads with natural menopause yielded a nonsignificant negative mean genetic correlation of r A =−0.139±1.268. Survival analysis/maximum likelihood estimation on a dataset which included an additional 85 dyads with censored observations on daughters yielded a (...)

This book explores the life-history of the individual within the context of Plato’s social thought. The author examines Plato’s treatment of the principal crises in an individual life - birth, educational selection, sex, the individual’s contract with society, old age, death, and life after death – and provides an unprecedented analysis of Plato’s theory of genetics as it appears in the Timaeus. Comparisons are made with contemporary developments in anthropology, sociology, and comparative myth but without losing sight of the fact (...)
