  1. Gavagai Again.John Robert Gareth Williams - 2008 - Synthese 164 (2):235-259.
Quine (1960, Word and object. Cambridge, Mass.:MIT Press, ch. 2) claims that there are a variety of equally good schemes for translating or interpreting ordinary talk. ‘Rabbit’ might be taken to divide its reference over rabbits, over temporal slices of rabbits, or undetached parts of rabbits, without significantly affecting which sentences get classified as true and which as false. This is the basis of his famous ‘argument from below’ to the conclusion that there can be no fact of the matter (...)

    Unesco's Proposed Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights – a Bland Compromise1.John R. Williams - 2005 - Developing World Bioethics 5 (3):210-215.
ABSTRACTThe latest draft of UNESCO's proposed Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights is a major disappointment. The committee of government ‘experts’ that produced it made sure that it would not introduce any new obligations for States, and so the document simply restates existing agreements and lists desirable goals without specifying how they can be achieved. This article focuses on the shortcomings of the document as it would apply to health care. These shortcomings are evident in the document's scope, aims (...)

The Vanishing Wild Card: Challenges and Implications of Ziporyn's Zhuangzi.John R. Williams - 2017 - Philosophy East and West 67 (1):177-191.
In this essay, Brook Ziporyn’s reading of Zhuangzi 莊子 is explicated and broken down into what I take to be its two primary parts: first, Zhuangzi’s epistemological agnosticism and perspectivism, and second, Zhuangzi’s Wild Card. The former presents a unique set of philosophical problems through the specialized terminology of the classical Chinese lexicon, while the latter tries to remedy these problems. I take the first part of Zhuangzi’s position to be compelling and pertinent, while the second part is problematic. Carrying (...)

Commissions and Biomedical Ethics: The Canadian Experience.John R. Williams - 1989 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 14 (4):425-444.
Canadians frequently have recourse to public commissions as a means of dealing with contentious public policy issues. This essay examines the role of philosophers and philosophy in nine such commissions, all of which have dealt with issues in biomedical ethics. The principal findings of this essay are that philosophers have not been used extensively by these commissions, and that the philosophical aspects of the issues under investigation have been dealt with quite inadequately. The essay concludes with suggestions for an expanded (...)

The Physician’s Role in the Protection of Human Research Subjects.John R. Williams - 2006 - Science and Engineering Ethics 12 (1):5-12.
Responsibility for the protection of human research subjects is shared by investigators, research ethics committees, sponsors/funders, research institutions, governments and, the focus of this article, physicians who enrol patients in clinical trials. The article describes the general principles of the patient-physician relationship that should regulate the participation of physicians in clinical trials and proposes guidelines for determining when and how such participation should proceed. The guidelines deal with the following stages of the trial: when first considering participation, when deciding whether (...)

Incorporating Ethics in Priority Setting: A Case Study of a Regional Health Board in Canada.Michael Yeo, John R. Williams & Wayne Hooper - 1999 - Health Care Analysis 7 (2):177-194.
The authors were involved in developing an ethical framework to assist the Queens Region Board set priorities in health and health care. Two and one half years after the adoption of this framework, the authors undertook an evaluation of the framework. This paper will discuss: a) the historical background of regionalization in Canada, and in particular the circumstances leading up to the institution of regional boards in Prince Edward Island; b) the sorts of ethical issues facing the Queens Regional Board; (...)
