    Automatic Mechanisms for Social Attention Are Culturally Penetrable.Adam S. Cohen, Joni Y. Sasaki, Tamsin C. German & Heejung S. Kim - 2017 - Cognitive Science 41 (1):242-258.
Are mechanisms for social attention influenced by culture? Evidence that social attention is triggered automatically by bottom-up gaze cues and is uninfluenced by top-down verbal instructions may suggest it operates in the same way everywhere. Yet considerations from evolutionary and cultural psychology suggest that specific aspects of one's cultural background may have consequence for the way mechanisms for social attention develop and operate. In more interdependent cultures, the scope of social attention may be broader, focusing on more individuals and relations (...)

  3. Gene–Culture Interactions: Toward an Explanatory Framework.Joni Y. Sasaki & Heewon Kwon - 2019 - Cambridge University Press.
Examining the interconnections between genes and culture is crucial for a more complete understanding of psychological processes. Genetic predispositions may predict different outcomes depending on one's cultural context, and culture may predict different outcomes depending on genetic predispositions - that is, genes and culture interact. Less is understood, however, about how genes and culture interact, or the psychological mechanisms through which gene–culture interactions occur. In this Element, Joni Y. Sasaki and Heewon Kwon review key findings and theories in (...)

Impacts of Fair Trade Certification on Coffee Farmers, Cooperatives, and Laborers in Nicaragua.Joni Valkila & Anja Nygren - 2010 - Agriculture and Human Values 27 (3):321-333.
This paper analyzes the possibilities and challenges of Fair Trade certification as a movement seeking to improve the well-being of small-scale coffee growers and coffee laborers in the global South. Six months of fieldwork was conducted in 2005–2006 to study the roles of a wide range of farmers, laborers, cooperative administrators, and export companies in Fair Trade coffee production and trade in Nicaragua. The results of our evaluation of the ability of Fair Trade to meet its objectives indicate that Fair (...)

  10. Empowering Coffee Traders? The Coffee Value Chain From Nicaraguan Fair Trade Farmers to Finnish Consumers.Joni Valkila, Pertti Haaparanta & Niina Niemi - 2010 - Journal of Business Ethics 97 (2):257 - 270.
This article analyzes the distribution of benefits from Fair Trade between producing and consuming countries. Fair Trade and conventional coffee production and trade were examined in Nicaragua in 2005-2006 and 2008. Consumption of the respective coffees was assessed in Finland in 2006-2009. The results indicate that consumers paid considerably more for Fair Trade-certified coffee than for the other alternatives available. Although Fair Trade provided price premiums to producer organizations, a larger share of the retail prices remained in the consuming country (...)

An Experimental Test of a Search Model Under Ambiguity.Takao Asano, Hiroko Okudaira & Masaru Sasaki - 2015 - Theory and Decision 79 (4):627-637.
The objective of this study is to design a laboratory experiment to explore the effect of ambiguity on a subject’s search behavior in a finite-horizon sequential search model. In so doing, we employ a strategy to observe the potential trend of reservation points that is usually unobserved. We observe that subjects behaving consistently across treatments reduce their reservation points in the face of ambiguity over point distribution. Our result is consistent with the theoretical implication obtained by Nishimura and Ozaki.

An Eighth Century Arabic Treatise on the Colouring of Glass: Kitāb Al-Durra Al-Maknūna of Jābir Ibn Ḥayyān : Ahmad Y. Al-Hassan.Ahmad Y. Al-Hassan - 2009 - Arabic Sciences and Philosophy 19 (1):121-156.
This paper examines the history of glass colouring. It reviews Kitāb al-Durra al-maknūna of Jābir ibn Ḥayyān, which deals with the subject. The manuscript of this practical treatise was discovered recently. Part one of the paper deals with Jābir as a philosopher and chemist. The art of lustre-painting on glass originated in Syria during the Umayyad Caliphate in the eighth century and was soon practised in the neighbouring area. The paper reviews Arabic literature that deals with the colouring of glass (...)

Differences in Advance Care Planning Among Nursing Home Care Staff.Joni Gilissen, Annelien Wendrich-van Dael, Chris Gastmans, Robert Vander Stichele, Luc Deliens, Karen Detering, Lieve Van den Block & Lara Pivodic - forthcoming - Nursing Ethics:096973302199418.
Background A team-based approach has been advocated for advance care planning in nursing homes. While nurses are often put forward to take the lead, it is not clear to what extent other professions could be involved as well. Objectives To examine to what extent engagement in advance care planning practices, knowledge and self-efficacy differ between nurses, care assistants and allied care staff in nursing homes. Design Survey study. Participants/setting The study involved a purposive sample of 14 nursing homes in Flanders, (...)

From “You’Ve Got Mail” to Email Overload.Joni Turville - 2019 - Techné: Research in Philosophy and Technology 23 (1):1-25.
Using a postphenomenological approach, this article follows the history of email from its first development by and for the scientific community, through its commercialization, and into its modern-day integration with mobile devices. Five historical variations are identified: emergence, propagation, habituation and commercialization, supersaturation, and evanescence. Finally, I propose a model that describes not only the evolution of email, but potentially other digital communications tools. Studying the history of a technology can provide insight into both its past and contemporary applications, and (...)

Imprinting and Looping: Epigenetic Marks Control Interactions Between Regulatory Elements.Yuzuru Kato & Hiroyuki Sasaki - 2005 - Bioessays 27 (1):1-4.
Gene regulation involves various cis-regulatory elements that can act at a distance. They may physically interact each other or with their target genes to exert their effects. Such interactions are beginning to be uncovered in the imprinted Igf2/H19 domain.1 The differentially methylated regions (DMRs), containing insulators, silencers and activators, were shown to have physical contacts between them. The interactions were changeable depending on their epigenetic state, presumably enabling Igf2 to move between an active and a silent chromatin domain. The study (...)
