    Is Compatibilism Intuitive?Daniel Lim & Ju Chen - 2018 - Philosophical Psychology 31 (6):878-897.
Eddy Nahmias, with various collaborators, has used experimental data to argue for the claim that folk intuition is generally compatibilist. We try to undermine this claim in two ways. First, we argue that the various formulations of determinism he uses are not conceptually equivalent, jeopardizing the kinds of conclusions that can be drawn from the resulting data. Second, prompted by these conceptual worries we supplement the typical quantitative surveys that dominate the extant literature with short qualitative interviews. This, in turn, (...)

Corporate Philanthropy and Tunneling: Evidence From China.Jun Chen, Wang Dong, Jamie Tong & Feida Zhang - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 150 (1):135-157.
This paper examines the association between corporate philanthropy and tunneling by controlling shareholders. Using a unique dataset from China, the paper finds evidence that firms donating more are less likely to tunnel. The negative association between philanthropy and tunneling is stronger when firms are faced with more severe agency conflicts, as indicated by lower largest shareholding, fewer growth opportunities, lower state ownership, and weaker product market competition. The results suggest that companies engaging in philanthropy have incentives to enhance their reputations (...)

Interpretation Bias and Social Anxiety: Does Interpretation Bias Mediate the Relationship Between Trait Social Anxiety and State Anxiety Responses?Junwen Chen, Kirby Milne, Janet Dayman & Eva Kemps - 2018 - Cognition and Emotion 33 (4):630-645.
ABSTRACTTwo studies aimed to examine whether high socially anxious individuals are more likely to negatively interpret ambiguous social scenarios and facial expressions compared to low socially anxious individuals. We also examined whether interpretation bias serves as a mediator of the relationship between trait social anxiety and state anxiety responses, in particular current state anxiety, bodily sensations, and perceived probability and cost of negative evaluation pertaining to a speech task. Study 1 used ambiguous social scenarios and Study 2 used ambiguous facial (...)

The Economic Consequences of Labor Unionization: Evidence From Stock Price Crash Risk.Jun Chen, Jamie Y. Tong, Wenming Wang & Feida Zhang - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 157 (3):775-796.
This study investigates the impact of labor unionization on stock price crash risk. We find that labor unionization is negatively associated with stock price crash risk. Such negative relation is more pronounced when firms can intimate more credible evidence on unfavorable prospects and when firms face more powerful labor unions. Our findings are consistent with the notion that firms take strategic actions to reduce the bargaining advantages enjoyed by labor unions and that labor unions force firms to take less risky (...)

Deep learning is an effective approach to solving image recognition problems. People draw intuitive conclusions from trading charts. This study uses the characteristics of deep learning to train computers in imitating this kind of intuition in the context of trading charts. The main goal of our approach is combining the time-series modeling and convolutional neural networks to build a trading model. We propose three steps to build the trading model. First, we preprocess the input data from quantitative data to images. (...)

Stable and enduring cooperative relationships among people are primarily based on mutual trust. However, little evidence exists about the effects of mutual trust between supervisor and subordinate on work outcomes. To understand better the dynamics of trust in supervisor–subordinate relationships, we examined how mutual trust between supervisor and subordinate is associated with work outcomes. Based on a sample of 247 subordinate–supervisor pairs, multilevel analyses revealed a positive effect of perceived mutual trust on task performance and interpersonal facilitation after controlling for (...)

Stricter Teacher, More Motivated Students? Comparing the Associations Between Teacher Behaviors and Motivational Beliefs of Western and East Asian Learners.Yushan Jiang, Chi-Kin John Lee, Zhi Hong Wan & Junjun Chen - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
Teacher behaviors are one of the most significant factors influencing student learning. Students from different cultures may have different interpretations of their teachers’ behaviors. This study compared the associations between teacher strictness, teacher feedback, and students’ motivational beliefs using data from six Western countries and six East Asian regions in the Program for International Student Assessment 2015. A total of 89,869 15-year-old students were included in data analysis. The findings indicate that teacher strictness was negatively associated with Western students’ motivation, (...)

Microsaccades, small saccadic eye movements occurring during fixation, have been suggested to be modulated by various sensory, cognitive, and affective processes relating to arousal. Although the modulation of fatigue-related arousal on microsaccade behavior has previously been characterized, the influence of other aspects of arousal, such as emotional arousal, is less understood. Moreover, microsaccades are modulated by cognitive processes that could also be linked to arousal. To investigate the influence of emotional arousal, saccade preparation, and global luminance levels on microsaccade behavior, (...)

China is currently experiencing rapid economic growth. The price of this, however, is environment pollution. Many Chinese corporations are lacking in corporate environmental responsibility (CER). Therefore, this study employs data from Chinese and multinational corporations to identify why Chinese corporations seldom engage in CER by investigating their motivations and stakeholders. The results show that the most important reason why Chinese corporations do not engage in CER is the fact that their competitive strategy of cost cutting makes them limited in resources, (...)

Quantum-Based Feature Selection for Multiclassification Problem in Complex Systems with Edge Computing.Wenjie Liu, Junxiu Chen, Yuxiang Wang, Peipei Gao, Zhibin Lei & Xu Ma - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-12.
The complex systems with edge computing require a huge amount of multifeature data to extract appropriate insights for their decision making, so it is important to find a feasible feature selection method to improve the computational efficiency and save the resource consumption. In this paper, a quantum-based feature selection algorithm for the multiclassification problem, namely, QReliefF, is proposed, which can effectively reduce the complexity of algorithm and improve its computational efficiency. First, all features of each sample are encoded into a (...)

The residual symmetry of a -dimensional Korteweg-de Vries -like equation is constructed using the truncated Painlevé expansion. Such residual symmetry can be localized and the -dimensional KdV-like equation is extended into an enlarged system by introducing some new variables. By using Lie’s first theorem, the finite transformation is obtained for this localized residual symmetry. Further, the linear superposition of multiple residual symmetries is localized and the n-th Bäcklund transformation in the form of the determinants is constructed for this equation. For (...)

    Abundant Symmetry-Breaking Solutions of the Nonlocal Alice–Bob Benjamin–Ono System.Wang Shen, Zheng-Yi Ma, Jin-Xi Fei, Quan-Yong Zhu & Jun-Chao Chen - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-12.
The Benjamin–Ono equation is a useful model to describe the long internal gravity waves in deep stratified fluids. In this paper, the nonlocal Alice–Bob Benjamin–Ono system is induced via the parity and time-reversal symmetry reduction. By introducing an extended Bäcklund transformation, the symmetry-breaking soliton, breather, and lump solutions for this system are obtained through the derived Hirota bilinear form. By taking suitable constants in the involved ansatz functions, abundant fascinating symmetry-breaking structures of the related explicit solutions are shown.
