Making Sense of Age-Group Justice: A Time for Relational Equality?Juliana Bidadanure - 2016 - Politics, Philosophy and Economics 15 (3):234-260.
This article brings together two debates in contemporary political philosophy: on the one hand, the dispute between the distributive and relational approaches to equality and, on the other hand, the field of intergenerational equality. I offer an original contribution to the second domain and by doing so, I inform the first. The aim of this article is thus twofold: shedding some light on an under-researched and yet crucial question – ‘which inequalities between generations matter?’ and contributing to a far-reaching debate (...)

Justicia versus caridad en la teoría de la propiedad de Locke.Juliana Udi - 2012 - Revista Latinoamericana de Filosofia 38 (1):65-84.
In this paper I identify two different lockean concepts of justice - "proprietary justice" and "justice as fairness" - and examine the relationship between each of them and charity in John Locke´s theory of property. As I try to show, in both cases Locke considers that charity may have priority over justice. This undermines the classical interpretation of Locke as a defender of unlimited capitalistic appropriation and provides additional evidence supporting Locke´s acceptation of a minimal redistributive system which should guarantee (...)

Zoning Law, Health, and Environmental Justice: What’s the Connection?Juliana Maantay - 2002 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 30 (4):572-593.
Zoning laws determine what types of land uses and densities can occur on each property lot in a municipality, and therefore also govern the range of potential environmental and health impacts resulting from the land use. Zoning regulations are the most ubiquitous of the land use laws in the United States, as well as in many other countries. As such, they have far-reaching effects on the location of noxious uses, and any concomitant environmental or human health impacts.Zoning has enormous implications, (...)

Better Procedures for Fairer Outcomes: Youth Quotas in Parliaments.Juliana Bidadanure - 2015 - Intergenerational Justice Review 7 (2).
In this article; I put forward an instrumental justification for the introduction of youth quotas in parliaments on grounds of justice between coexisting generations. I provide a two-fold argument drawing on the distinction between “substantive representation” and “symbolic representation”. I argue that these jointly provide a good basis for a “politics of youth presence” in parliaments. In the first section; I evaluate the impact that youth quotas can have on enhancing the chances of fair youth policies. In the second section; (...)

Measuring Evidence: A Probabilistic Approach to an Extension of Belnap–Dunn Logic.Abilio Rodrigues, Juliana Bueno-Soler & Walter Carnielli - forthcoming - Synthese:1-30.
This paper introduces the logic of evidence and truth \ as an extension of the Belnap–Dunn four-valued logic \. \ is a slightly modified version of the logic \, presented in Carnielli and Rodrigues. While \ is equipped only with a classicality operator \, \ is equipped with a non-classicality operator \ as well, dual to \. Both \ and \ are logics of formal inconsistency and undeterminedness in which the operator \ recovers classical logic for propositions in its scope. (...)

Structural and Stratigraphic Feature Delineation and Facies Distribution Using Seismic Attributes and Well Log Analysis Applied to a Brazilian Carbonate Field.Juliana Finoto Bueno, Bruno César Zanardo Honório, Michelle Chaves Kuroda, Alexandre Campane Vidal & Emilson Pereira Leite - 2014 - Interpretation: SEG 2 (1):SA83-SA92.
Identification of structural and stratigraphic components within a hydrocarbon reservoir is essential for the construction of geologic models that represent the facies distribution as accurately as possible. Such construction may represent a challenge for ancient carbonate reservoirs, which exhibit greater heterogeneity than siliciclastic reservoirs. We developed a workflow that incorporated seismic attribute analysis and well log data to highlight structural and architectural elements with the benefit of the understanding the distribution of facies in this features in an Albian offshore carbonate (...)

Short-Sightedness in Youth Welfare Provision: The Case of RSA in France.Juliana Bidadanure - 2012 - Intergenerational Justice Review 6 (1).
This paper reconstitutes and addresses critically the deontological and consequentialist arguments given by the French government to justify the denial of the national guaranteed minimum income support to young people under 25 years old. The deontological arguments express a concern for distributive justice and suggest that young people do not deserve income support. The consequentialist arguments; on the other hand; emphasise social efficiency: they draw on the alleged negative outcomes that the extension of income support to young people would bring (...)

    An Evaluation of Derk Pereboom's Four-Case Argument.Mostofa N. Mansur - 2018 - Copula 35:16.
Hard incompatibilism is a view which asserts that determinism and free will are inconsistent and given the facts of our best sciences determinism is true; and hence, free will does not exist. Not only that, it also claims that if the world were indeterministic and our actions were caused by states or events, still we would lack free will. In this way, it denies the truth of any libertarian account of free will based on event causation. In that sense, this (...)

    'Ought' Implies 'Can' and the Argument From Self-Imposed Impossibility: A Critical Examination.Mostofa N. Mansur - 2013 - Copula 30:12.
Defenders of the Kantian maxim, i.e. ‘ought’ implies ‘can’, defend the maxim taking the term “implication” in the sense of ‘entailment’. But if it is granted that “implication” means entailment, then it can be shown that the Kantian maxim that ‘ought’ implies ‘can’ is false. Sinnott-Armstrong attempts to prove the falsity of the maxim by his argument from Self-Imposed Impossibility in which he offers his famous example of Adams. But Sinnott-Armstrong’s example of Adams appears to be not strong enough to (...)

  45. Bertrand Russell’s Theory of Definite Descriptions: An Examination.Mostofa N. Mansur - 2012 - Dissertation, University of Calgary, Calgary, AB, Canada
Despite its enormous popularity, Russell’s theory of definite descriptions has received various criticisms. Two of the most important objections against this theory are those arising from the Argument from Incompleteness and the Argument from Donnellan’s Distinction. According to the former although a speaker may say something true by assertively uttering a sentence containing an incomplete description , on the Russellian analysis such a sentence expresses a false proposition; so, Russell’s theory cannot adequately deal with such sentences. According to the latter (...)

    Two Semantical Approaches to Paraconsistent Modalities.Juliana Bueno-Soler - 2010 - Logica Universalis 4 (1):137-160.
In this paper we extend the anodic systems introduced in Bueno-Soler (J Appl Non Class Logics 19(3):291–310, 2009) by adding certain paraconsistent axioms based on the so called logics of formal inconsistency , introduced in Carnielli et al. (Handbook of philosophical logic, Springer, Amsterdam, 2007), and define the classes of systems that we call cathodic . These classes consist of modal paraconsistent systems, an approach which permits us to treat with certain kinds of conflicting situations. Our interest in this paper (...)

The notion of interpretation developed in the critical rationalism of Karl R. Popper (...)

We propose a new approach to positive modal logics, hereby called anodic modal logics. Our treatment is completely positive since the language has neither negation nor any falsum or minimal particle. The elimination of the minimal particle of the language requires introducing the new concept of factual sets and factual deductions which permit us to talk about deductions in the actual world. We start from a positive fragment of the standard system K, denoted by K⊃, ∧, ◊, which is a (...)
