The Practical and Ethical Considerations in Labeling a Religious Group as a 'Cult'.Cleaver Ken - 2012 - Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies 11 (33):164-181.
In American, the terms “schism,” “heresy,” “sect,” and “cult” have been used to describe splinter groups as they distinguish themselves from the majority religion. The term cult has been used in two different senses. Within the Roman Catholic Church a group’s devotion to a particular saint may earn them the title “Cult of” that particular saint. However, among contemporary American Protestants the term cult has come to be applied to religious groups that split from mainstream Christianity with regard to their (...)

DNA repair in man: Regulation by a multigene family and association with human disease.James E. Cleaver & Deneb Karentz - 1987 - Bioessays 6 (3):122-127.
The major mechanism of repair of damage to DNA involves a conceptually simple process of enzymatic excision and resynthesis of small regions of DNA. In man and other mammals, this process is regulated by several gene loci; up to 15 mutually complementary genes or gene products may be involved. Repair deficiency results in an array of clinical symptoms in skin, central nervous system, and hematopoietic and immune systems, the major example being xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), a disease with a high incidence (...)

    Rupturing the Dialectic.Harry Cleaver - 2018 - Dialogue and Universalism 28 (3):11-53.
In a period in which capital has been on the offensive for many years, using debt and financial crises as rationales for wielding austerity to hammer down wages and social services and terrorism as an excuse for attacking civil liberties, it is important to realize that the origins of this long period of crisis lay in the struggles of people to free their lives from the endless subordination to work within a society organized as a gigantic social factory. In both (...)

    Venn-type diagrams for arguments of N terms.Daniel E. Anderson & Frank L. Cleaver - 1965 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 30 (2):113-118.
The attempt to find usable diagrams fornterms of the sort devised by John Venn seems to have originated with Venn himself, who published diagrams for up to five classes (the fifth class, however, was shaped like a doughnut, and contained an area outside itself — like the hole in the doughnut). Venn then suggested that “if we wanted to use a diagram forsixterms (x, y, z, w, v, u) the best plan would probably be to taketwofive-term figures, one for theupart (...)

    Metaphors and Metaphoric Objects.E. T. Jooste & Glenda Cleaver - 1992 - Journal of Phenomenological Psychology 23 (2):136-148.
This article reports on an exploratory study that used metaphoric objects as a therapeutic aid. During Rogerian therapy sessions, a metaphoric object was handed to clients. The metaphoric object was used as a reflection of an aspect of the client's being. The clients were asked to describe the effect the object had on them. The protocols obtained were subjected to a phenomenological analysis. The study indicates that metaphoric objects can be a useful therapeutic aid.

Incentives and informal institutions: Gender and the management of water. [REVIEW]Frances Cleaver - 1998 - Agriculture and Human Values 15 (4):347-360.
In this paper I consider thecontribution that theories about common propertyresource management and policies relating toparticipation can make to our understanding ofcommunal water resource management. Common totheoretical and policy approaches are the ideas thatincentives are important in defining the problem ofcollective action and that institutions apparentlyoffer a solution to it. The gendered dynamics ofincentives and institutions are explored. This paperbriefly outlines theoretical approaches toinstitutions as solutions to collective actionproblems and indicates the linkages with policiesregarding participation in water resource management. It suggests (...)

Comparative Analysis of the Concept of Constitutional Judicial Law-Making in the United States of America and Kazakhstan.Elvira K. Saparbekova, Akmaral B. Smanova, Dauren B. Makhambetsaliyev, Indira S. Nessipbaeva & Latifa B. Nussipova - forthcoming - International Journal for the Semiotics of Law - Revue Internationale de Sémiotique Juridique:1-15.
Constitutional and judicial law-making is increasingly beginning to find its reflection not only in the Anglo-Saxon, but also in the Romano-Germanic legal family. However, the prerequisites for the use of this legal instrument are different, which determines the relevance of conducting a comparative analysis regarding the provision of such a mechanism in the USA and Kazakhstan. The purpose of the research is to identify common and distinctive features in the process of implementation of constitutional and judicial law-making in countries belonging (...)

Choice, complexity, and change: Gendered livelihoods and the management of water. [REVIEW]Frances Cleaver - 1998 - Agriculture and Human Values 15 (4):293-299.
This paper highlights some of thethemes elaborated by other authors in this specialissue. Critiquing prevailing policies on the groundsof sectoral bias, instrumental approaches toparticipation, and an inadequate understanding ofsocial context, I suggest that these detract from atruly gendered understanding of water resourcemanagement. Suggestions for further research andalternative analytical tools are pursued in thefollowing papers.

Vedānta and Bhagavadgītā: the unpublished writings of K. Satchidananda Murty.K. Satchidananda Murty - 2023 - New York, NY: Routledge. Edited by Ashok Vohra & K. Ramesh.
    K. Satchidananda Murty (1924-2011) was a vociferous writer and an iconoclast. This volume is a collection of his unpublished writings. It includes Murty's views on the Veda, its meaning, relevance, and study, and shows the significance of the Vedāntic vision to the modern world. Murty elucidates the basic tenets of Advaita Vedānta and expounds the Advaitic doctrine of the relationships between Brahman and God, Brahman and the individual self, as well as between God and the world. In his writings, Murty (...)

This chapter provides an introduction to higher-order metaphysics as well as to the contributions to this volume. We discuss five topics, corresponding to the five parts of this volume, and summarize the contributions to each part. First, we motivate the usefulness of higher-order quantification in metaphysics using a number of examples, and discuss the question of how such quantifiers should be interpreted. We provide a brief introduction to the most common forms of higher-order logics used in metaphysics, and indicate a (...)

Toward a mathematical theory of moral systems: moral systems, black boxes, and metrics.K. M. Halpern - 2020 - [Cambridge, Massachusetts?]: Epsilon Books.
This monograph aims to mathematically codify the notion of "moral systems" and define a sensible distance between them. It consists of three parts, aimed at an audience with varying interests and mathematical backgrounds. The first part steers philosophical, formally defining moral systems and several related concepts. The second part studies black box algorithms, including questions of inference and metric construction. The third part explores the technical construction of metrics amongst conditional probability distributions.
