Theorizing alternatives to capital: Towards a critical cosmopolitanist framework1.S. A. Hamed Hosseini, James Goodman & Barry K. Gills - 2017 - European Journal of Social Theory 20 (4):437-454.
We are living in an era of multiple crises, multiple social resistances, and multiple cosmopolitanisms. The post-Cold War context has generated a plethora of movements, but no single unifying ideology or global political program has yet materialized. The historical confrontation between capital and its alternatives, however, continues to pose new possibilities for social and systemic transformations. Critical analysis of ideological divisions among today’s diverse emancipatory and transformative movements is important in order to understand past and present shortcomings, and many continuing (...)

Artifact characterization and mitigation techniques during concurrent sensing and stimulation using bidirectional deep brain stimulation platforms.Michaela E. Alarie, Nicole R. Provenza, Michelle Avendano-Ortega, Sarah A. McKay, Ayan S. Waite, Raissa K. Mathura, Jeffrey A. Herron, Sameer A. Sheth, David A. Borton & Wayne K. Goodman - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
Bidirectional deep brain stimulation platforms have enabled a surge in hours of recordings in naturalistic environments, allowing further insight into neurological and psychiatric disease states. However, high amplitude, high frequency stimulation generates artifacts that contaminate neural signals and hinder our ability to interpret the data. This is especially true in psychiatric disorders, for which high amplitude stimulation is commonly applied to deep brain structures where the native neural activity is miniscule in comparison. Here, we characterized artifact sources in recordings from (...)

We estimate that 208,000 deep brain stimulation (DBS) devices have been implanted to address neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders worldwide. DBS Think Tank presenters pooled data and determined that DBS expanded in its scope and has been applied to multiple brain disorders in an effort to modulate neural circuitry. The DBS Think Tank was founded in 2012 providing a space where clinicians, engineers, researchers from industry and academia discuss current and emerging DBS technologies and logistical and ethical issues facing the field. PELP: Accounting for Missing Data in Neural Time Series by Periodic Estimation of Lost Packets.Evan M. Dastin-van Rijn, Nicole R. Provenza, Gregory S. Vogt, Michelle Avendano-Ortega, Sameer A. Sheth, Wayne K. Goodman, Matthew T. Harrison & David A. Borton - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
Recent advances in wireless data transmission technology have the potential to revolutionize clinical neuroscience. Today sensing-capable electrical stimulators, known as “bidirectional devices”, are used to acquire chronic brain activity from humans in natural environments. However, with wireless transmission come potential failures in data transmission, and not all available devices correctly account for missing data or provide precise timing for when data losses occur. Our inability to precisely reconstruct time-domain neural signals makes it difficult to apply subsequent neural signal processing techniques (...)

An intervention to improve cancer patients' understanding of early-phase clinical trials.Nancy E. Kass, Jeremy Sugarman, Amy M. Medley, Linda A. Fogarty, Holly A. Taylor, Christopher K. Daugherty, Mark R. Emerson, Steven N. Goodman, Fay J. Hlubocky & Herbert I. Hurwitz - 2009 - IRB: Ethics & Human Research 31 (3):1.
Participants in clinical research sometimes view participation as therapy or exaggerate potential benefits, especially in phase I or phase II trials. We conducted this study to discover what methods might improve cancer patients’ understanding of early-phase clinical trials. We randomly assigned 130 cancer patients from three U.S. medical centers who were considering enrollment in a phase I or phase II cancer trial to receive either a multimedia intervention or a National Cancer Institute pamphlet explaining the trial and its purpose. Intervention (...)

    Nondeductive Inference. [REVIEW]P. K. H. - 1968 - Review of Metaphysics 21 (3):546-546.
This book is a clear, concise, and conceptually unified treatment of various problems, both formal and philosophical, of inductive logic and probability. Ackermann's main concern throughout the book is the problem of adducing inductive support for various hypotheses, and of deciding between two competing hypotheses which is more reasonable given the available evidence. The author begins with a general consideration of the criteria to be met by satisfactory rules of inductive inference: accordance with intuitive notions of reasonableness in simple cases, (...)

    Studies in Logical Theory. [REVIEW]H. K. R. - 1970 - Review of Metaphysics 23 (3):573-574.
This is the second volume in the new monograph series sponsored by the American Philosophical Quarterly and judging by the high quality of most of the essays in this collection the idea for such a series seems to be a good one. A wide variety of topics in contemporary philosophical logic are discussed in seven essays, as suggested by the following brief account of their contents: Montgomery Furth's "Two Types of Denotation" is a careful study of Frege's views of denotation, (...)

The Logical Way of Doing Things.Patrick K. Bastable - 1971 - Philosophical Studies (Dublin) 20:333-335.
About the 1930’s there was in Harvard University a group of young American philosophers including Quine, Frankena, Henle, Stevenson, Goheen, Goodman, Isenberg and Leonard. This volume is dedicated to the last named. It is appropriately titled, The Logical Way of Doing Things, for the main activating force in Leonard’s work was the new mathematical logic, and he was one of the first American philosophers who urged the application of logic to non-mathematical areas and who believed in the enormous power (...)

Oddity One : Kripke claims that Wittgenstein has invented "a new form of scepticism", one which inclines Kripke "to regard it as the most radical and original sceptical problem that philosophy has seen to date, one that only a highly unusual cast of mind could have produced" (K, p. 60). However, Kripke also claims that there are analogies (and sometimes the analogies look very much like identities) between Wittgenstein's sceptical argument and the work of at least three and maybe four (...)

Right and Recognition: Criminal Action and Intersubjectivity in Hegel's Early Ethics.K. S. Decker - 2001 - History of Political Thought 22 (2):300-316.
This paper explores one aspect of the political in the early Hegel, that of criminal action and its relationship to the concept of recognition in the System of Ethical Life. While it is clear that in this work Hegel thinks that criminal action plays an important role in the transformation of simple ethical communities, it is not clear that, for Hegel, the formal character of crime in the struggle for recognition is anything but negative. I attempt to show how this (...)

Increasingly, national governments across the globe are prioritizing investments in neuroscience. Currently, seven active or in-development national-level brain research initiatives exist, spanning four continents. Engaging with the underlying values and ethical concerns that drive brain research across cultural and continental divides is critical to future research. Culture influences what kinds of science are supported and where science can be conducted through ethical frameworks and evaluations of risk. Neuroscientists and philosophers alike have found themselves together encountering perennial questions; these questions are (...)
