    Editor's Introduction.S. K. - 1992 - Studia Logica 51 (3-4):233-233.
In the summer of 1997 one could scarcely enter a bookstore in Beijing without encountering Wang Xiaobo's pensive and defiant look on the cover of dozens (...)of books displayed at the entrance. Wang had suddenly died in the spring of that year at the age of forty-five. Born in Beijing in 1952 to a family of intellectuals, he remained attached to China's capital despite periods of separation, such as during the Cultural Revolution, when he was sent to Yunnan to "learn from the peasants" and taught in a "people-run-school" in Shandong, and also during the 1980s, when he studied in the United States . Wang always returned to Beijing, in the late 1970s to study economy and business at the People's University and in the late 1980s to teach there. After retiring in 1993, he devoted his time to writing: poetry, novels, essays, non-fiction, and a movie script. (shrink)

    Doubt's Boundless Sea: Skepticism and Faith in the Renaissance.W. B. K. - 1965 - Review of Metaphysics 19 (2):366-366.
Allen begins with a general survey of "atheism and atheists" in the Renaissance, gives brief sketches of six individual "atheists"—Pomponazzi, Cardano, Vanini, Montaigne, Charron, Bodindevotes chapters (...) to rational theology against atheism and to reason and immorality, and closes with a portrait of the "atheist redeemed" in the person of the Earl of Rochester, the arch-rake of the Restoration who was converted during his final illness. He points out that during this period "atheist" usually meant no more than a person whose theology did not agree fully with that of the name-caller, and that none of the thinkers he mentions merited the term in any strict sense. The book is a wide-ranging, erudite survey without much attempt at either analysis in depth or synthesis, but Allen's somewhat Voltairean point of view helps give it form.—W. B. K. (shrink)

Hegel on the Sublime1: S.K.SAXENA.S. K. Saxena - 1974 - Religious Studies 10 (2):153-172.
Hegel's treatment of the Sublime is both self-consistent and distinctive. He not only defines sublimity, but discovers and ranks its types or stages from one select (...) point of viewthe viewpoint of God-world relation; and the way he does this, on the one hand, distinguishes him from many others who have contributed to an understanding of the concept, and, on the other hand, enables him to suggest, if but implicitly, a criterion for distinguishing the sublime from allied concepts. Besides, he discusses the matter in the wide context of diverse cultures, making quite a few insightful references to Eastern literature; and, consistently with his own conception of philosophy, also from the viewpoint of historical necessity, so that the sublime appears, in his Aesthetik, as a specific stage which the evolving story of art must in fact traverse. 36. What Is Ethically Demanded? K. E. Løgstrups Philosophy of Moral Life.R. Stern & Hans Fink (eds.) - 2017 - University of Notre Dame Press.
This collection of essays by leading international philosophers considers central themes in the ethics of Danish philosopher Knud Ejler Løgstrup (19051981). Løgstrup was a Lutheran theologian (...)much influenced by phenomenology and by strong currents in Danish culture, to which he himself made important contributions. The essays in What Is Ethically Demanded? K. E. Løgstrups Philosophy of Moral Life are divided into four sections. The first section deals predominantly with Løgstrups relation to Kant and, through Kant, the system of morality in general. The second section focuses on how Løgstrup stands in connection with Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Levinas. The third section considers issues in the development of Løgstrups ethics and how it relates to other aspects of his thought. The final section covers certain central themes in Løgstrups position, particularly his claims about trust and the unfulfillability of the ethical demand. The volume includes a previously untranslated early essay by Løgstrup, “The Anthropology of Kants Ethics,” which defines some of his basic ethical ideas in opposition to Kants. The book will appeal to philosophers and theologians with an interest in ethics and the history of philosophy. (shrink)

Applying D. K. Lewiss Counterfactual Theory of Causation to the Philosophy of Historiography.Alexander Maar - 2016 - Journal of the Philosophy of History 10 (3):349-369.
_ Source: _Volume 10, Issue 3, pp 349 - 369 A theory of causation suitable for historiography must accommodate the many types of causal claims historians make. In (...) this paper, I examine the advantages of applying D. K. Lewiss counterfactual theory of causation to the philosophy of historiography. I contend that Lewiss possible world semantics offers a superior framework for making sense of historical causation, and that it lays the foundation for historians to look at history as causal series of events, remaining agnostic as to whether there may be historical regularities or laws. Lewiss theory can also accommodate important notions often used by historians, such as absences as causes, historical necessity and contingency, and the role they play in the formulation of historical counterfactuals. Kafkas Land Surveyor K.: Agamben's Anti-Muselmann.Boštjan Nedoh - 2011 - Angelaki 16 (3):149-161.
This paper first outlines the key traits of some critiques of Agambens theory of the subject. What they have in common is an emphasis on the (...)limitations of his conception of political agency, which is based on the one hand on an apathetic and passive figure such as the Muselmann, and on the other, on Bartleby, the Scrivener, who epitomises Agambens notion of potentiality. Following this short review I then focus on Agambens recent articleK.,” in which he compares and contrasts the two Kafkian figures of K. from The Trial and The Castle in the context of Roman law. Considering Benjamins distinction between a virtual and real state of exception, Josef K. and land surveyor K. adopt two different positions with regard to the form of law on which the structure of sovereignty is based. Josef K. represents bare life, which persists along the internal boundary that is constitutive of the form of law, while land surveyor K. is the subject that manages to erase this internal boundary and, thus, represents the only Agambenian figure that can effectively suspend and abolish the form of law. Anthony K. Jensen's An Interpretation of Nietzsche's On the Uses and Disadvantages of History for Life[REVIEW]Mark Alfano - 2016 - Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews 7.
Anthony K. Jensen has successfully undertaken an essential project for the fields of Nietzsche studies and philosophy of history. In his interpretation of Nietzsche's second "Untimely (...) Meditation," On the Uses and Disadvantages for Life[1] (henceforth HL), he demonstrates an attention to detail and meticulousness sometimes bordering on obsessiveness. This textual work is based on Jensen's comprehensive familiarity with the philosophical, philological, and historiographic culture in which Nietzsche was trained and to which he was in part responding. Unlike many Anglophone philosophers interested in Nietzsche, Jensen is fully at home with German language and idiom. He combines this linguistic facility with philological expertise and encyclopedic archival research to bring sober clarity to a field often plagued by flights of interpretive speculation. Jensen is knowledgeable of not only the Anglophone but also the Germanophone secondary literatures, and he uses this expertise like a wide-angle lens to give his readers a synoptic perspective on the last thirteen decades of reactions to and interpretations of HL. I hasten to add, though, that his monograph is not simply a summary of the production, content, and reception of one of Nietzsche's early works; it is also a judicious philosophical evaluation of Nietzsche's views and arguments. It may not be the last word on HL, but the prospect of adding anything new and valuable is now daunting. (shrink)

(shrink)

A Panel Discussion of James K. A. Smiths Awaiting the King: Reforming Public Theology * : Introduction: An Augustine for Our Time.David P. Henreckson - 2019 - Studies in Christian Ethics 32 (1):105-107.
James K. A. Smiths book Awaiting the King interrogates the religious nature of contemporary politics and the political nature of Christian practice, and in doing so (...)draws Augustine out of the ivory tower to which many have confined him, putting the late-antique theologian into a conversation with a host of contemporary voices. Bergson Before Bergsonism: TraversingBergsons Failingin Susanne K. Langers Philosophy of Art.Iris van der Tuin - 2016 - Journal of French and Francophone Philosophy 24 (2):176-202.
How did the philosophy of Henri Bergson look before Gilles Deleuzes Bergsonism? This article provides a situated answer to that question by performing a close reading (...)of Susanne K. Langers early engagement with Bergson in her monograph Feeling and Form from 1953. Both Bergson and Langer argue against polemical philosophizing. Such polemical modes of doing philosophy distort insight into the thought of the philosophers in question and in philosophical questions per se. My reading of Langers Bergson is therefore infused with what is nowadays called a new materialist impetus of non-linearity, a non-oppositional philosophizing, and the reading follows the methodology of diffractive reading, a thinking outside fixed and fixating schools of thought. I argue that in spite of Langers explicit, i.e., polemical objection to Bergsons work and to its use by artists, it is a Bergsonism with which Langers work is infused. (shrink)
