  8. What is a Complex System?James Ladyman, James Lambert & Karoline Wiesner - 2013 - European Journal for Philosophy of Science 3 (1):33-67.
Complex systems research is becoming ever more important in both the natural and social sciences. It is commonly implied that there is such a thing as a complex system, different examples of which are studied across many disciplines. However, there is no concise definition of a complex system, let alone a definition on which all scientists agree. We review various attempts to characterize a complex system, and consider a core set of features that are widely associated with complex systems in (...)

The Double-Edged Sword of Ethical Nudges: Does Inducing Hypocrisy Help or Hinder the Adoption of Pro-Environmental Behaviors?Karoline Gamma, Robert Mai & Moritz Loock - forthcoming - Journal of Business Ethics:1-23.
To promote ethical and pro-environmental behavior, hypocrisy sometimes is made salient to individuals: i.e., they are made aware that their past behavior does not conform to expressed norms. The fact that this strategy may backfire and may even reduce the likelihood of individuals performing the desired action has been largely overlooked. This paper develops a theory of how hypocrisy stimulates two opposing heuristic processes: one that favors the former, positive outcome and one that renders hypocrisy non-effective. We test the model (...)

  11. Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Relation and Bell Inequalities in High Energy Physics.Antonio Di Domenico, Andreas Gabriel, Beatrix C. Hiesmayr, Florian Hipp, Marcus Huber, Gerd Krizek, Karoline Mühlbacher, Sasa Radic, Christoph Spengler & Lukas Theussl - 2012 - Foundations of Physics 42 (6):778-802.
An effective formalism is developed to handle decaying two-state systems. Herewith, observables of such systems can be described by a single operator in the Heisenberg picture. This allows for using the usual framework in quantum information theory and, hence, to enlighten the quantum features of such systems compared to non-decaying systems. We apply it to systems in high energy physics, i.e. to oscillating meson–antimeson systems. In particular, we discuss the entropic Heisenberg uncertainty relation for observables measured at different times at (...)

    Stability of Democracies: A Complex Systems Perspective.Karoline Wiesner, A. Birdi, T. Eliassi-Rad, H. Farrell, D. Garcia, S. Lewandowsky, Patricia Palacios, Don Ross, D. Sornette & Karim P. Y. Thebault - 2019 - European Journal of Physics 40 (1).
The idea that democracy is under threat, after being largely dormant for at least 40 years, is looming increasingly large in public discourse. Complex systems theory offers a range of powerful new tools to analyse the stability of social institutions in general, and democracy in particular. What makes a democracy stable? And which processes potentially lead to instability of a democratic system? This paper offers a complex systems perspective on this question, informed by areas of the mathematical, natural, and social (...)

Thinking About Time and Number: An Application of the Dual-Systems Approach to Numerical Cognition.Karoline Lohse, Elena Sixtus & Jan Lonnemann - 2019 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 42.
Based on the notion that time, space, and number are part of a generalized magnitude system, we assume that the dual-systems approach to temporal cognition also applies to numerical cognition. Referring to theoretical models of the development of numerical concepts, we propose that children's early skills in processing numbers can be described analogously to temporal updating and temporal reasoning.

Adorno and the Sublime in Live Performance.Karoline Gritzner - 2016 - The European Legacy 21 (7):633-643.
This article examines Adorno’s re-conceptualisation of the traditional concept of the sublime, arguing that for Adorno the sublime aesthetic experience foregrounds an awareness of non-identity and the “priority of the object.” For Adorno, tears, shudders, and the emotions of shock and terror remain authentic responses to artworks because they remind the ego of its affinity with nature. Adorno’s treatment of the sublime in modern art and in relation to his theory of the dialectic of enlightenment invites a radical critique of (...)

    Is Quantum Probability Rational?Alasdair I. Houston & Karoline Wiesner - 2013 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 36 (3):291 - 292.
We concentrate on two aspects of the article by Pothos & Busemeyer (P&B): the relationship between classical and quantum probability and quantum probability as a basis for rational decisions. We argue that the mathematical relationship between classical and quantum probability is not quite what the authors claim. Furthermore, it might be premature to regard quantum probability as the best practical rational scheme for decision making.

What Is Light?Ellen Karoline Henriksen, Carl Angell, Arnt Inge Vistnes & Berit Bungum - 2018 - Science and Education: Academic Journal of Ushynsky University 27 (1-2):81-111.
Quantum physics describes light as having both particle and wave properties; however, there is no consensus about how to interpret this duality on an ontological level. This article explores how pre-university physics students, while working with learning material focusing on historical-philosophical aspects of quantum physics, interpreted the wave-particle duality of light and which views they expressed on the nature of physics. A thematic analysis was performed on 133 written responses about the nature of light, given in the beginning of the (...)
