The Chisan-Chisho Movement: Japanese Local Food Movement and its Challenges. [REVIEW]Aya Hirata Kimura & Mima Nishiyama - 2008 - Agriculture and Human Values 25 (1):49-64.
This paper examines the increasingly popular chisan-chisho movement that has promoted the localization of food consumption in Japan since the late-1990s. Chisan-chisho emerged in the context of a perceived crisis in the Japanese food system, particularly the long-term decline of agriculture and rural community and more recent episodes of food scandals. Although initially started as a grassroots movement, many chisan-chisho initiatives are now organized by governments and farmers’ cooperatives. Acknowledging that the chisan-chisho movement has added some important resources and a (...)

    Are Universal Statements Falsifiable?

Development of Agent System Based on Decision Model for Creating an Ambient Space.Takashi Nishiyama, Shinpei Hibiya & Tetsuo Sawaragi - 2011 - AI and Society 26 (3):247-259.
This paper describes a decision model for an autonomous agent that provides an inhabitant with comfort based on information network technologies that connect home electric appliances with household equipment. The inhabitant enjoys the benefit of comfort, while he pays the cost for keeping that comfort. The autonomous agent should decide and control household equipment considering that cost from the inhabitant’s viewpoint. Thus, we utilized a representation scheme called an “influence diagram” that enabled us to model the decision-making process of the (...)

Jennings and Zande Logic: A Note.Lansana Keita - 1993 - British Journal for the Philosophy of Science 44 (1):151-156.
Zande Logic and Western Logic’ Richard Jennings argues that contrary to the view of Evans-Pritchard and Tim Triplett the system of logic employed by the Azande is sui generis and distinct from that of Westerners. I argue that this thesis is erroneous because Jennings, following Evans-Pritchard, is at fault in his analysis of the logic of the Azande. Zande thinking on the topic of witchcraft-substance heritability is not contradictory as believed. But even if one assumes that the Azande do reason (...)

The Meaning and Interpretations of the Japanese Aspect Marker -Te-I-.Atsuko Nishiyama - 2006 - Journal of Semantics 23 (2):185-216.
The Japanese marker -te-i- can have progressive, resultative, and existential perfect readings and has often been regarded as ambiguous. This paper shows that there is no clear evidence that -te-i- is ambiguous. It proposes a monosemous analysis of -te-i- that unifies its multiple readings and shows how progressives and perfects can form a natural semantic class. Within the context of a Discourse Representation Theory (Kamp and Reyle 1993, de Swart 1998), I propose that -te-i- consists of an imperfective operator -te- (...)

    Pearce's "African Philosophy and the Sociological Thesis" a Response.L. D. Keita - 1994 - Philosophy of the Social Sciences 24 (2):192-203.
Carole Pearce's argument against African philosophy is founded on a set of factual flaws and the fallacious assumption that African philosophy is equivalent to ethnophilosophy, which she defines as a form of intellectual apartheid founded on irrational belief systems. I argue that African philosophy is in no way qualitatively different from, say, French or Chinese philosophy, and that ethnophilosophy is merely one aspect of it But ethnophilosophy could play the important role of critically evaluating African ethnic belief systems and the (...)

    Facticity and Poietics in History.Tatsuya Nishiyama - 2016 - Philosophy Today 60 (4):893-910.
Modern Japanese thinkers tried to understand “history” as processes of translation through which the Japanese culture/society/nation integrated itself into world history. This paper analyzes Miki Kiyoshi’s Philosophy of History [1932], a prominent example of such an approach to history. His understanding of history is deeply influenced by Martin Heidegger’s thoughts about facticity. The most essential part of Miki’s notion of “history” lies in his practico-poietic conception of history, which is elaborated through his own interpretation of Heidegger. This paper attempts to (...)

Teaching Philosophy Through Derrida's Deconstruction.Yuji Nishiyama - 2008 - Proceedings of the Xxii World Congress of Philosophy 52:39-48.

Practical Rationality in Social Science Explanation: A Reply to Terrence Kelly.Lansana Keita - 2006 - Philosophy of the Social Sciences 36 (2):219-226.
Terrence Kelly argues for a theory of practical rationality to explain and handle the issue of residential segregation in the United States. Kelly claims that theories of "racism as irrational" and rational choice are not explanatorily adequate in this regard. I argue that the theory of practical rationality is also not adequate because by allowing agents to offer accounts of their calculated behaviour, it allows little appraisal of the behaviour itself. I argue instead that better explanations could be offered by (...)

    Economic Theory, Ideal Types, and Rationality.Lansana Keita - 1982 - Analyse & Kritik 4 (1):22-38.
Contemporary economic theory is generally regarded as a scientific or at least potentially so. The replacing of the cardinal theory of utility measurement by the ordinal theory was supposed to prepare the groundwork for economics as a genuine science. But in adopting the ordinal approach, theorists saw fit to anchor ordinal theory to axioms of choice founded on principles of rational behavior. Behavior according to these axioms was embodied in the ideal type model of rational economic man. This model served (...)
