Stability and Hopf Bifurcation in a Three-Component Planktonic Model with Spatial Diffusion and Time Delay.Kejun Zhuang, Gao Jia & Dezhi Liu - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-17.
Due to the different roles that nontoxic phytoplankton and toxin-producing phytoplankton play in the whole aquatic system, a delayed reaction-diffusion planktonic model under homogeneous Neumann boundary condition is investigated theoretically and numerically. This model describes the interactions between the zooplankton and two kinds of phytoplanktons. The long-time behavior of the model and existence of positive constant equilibrium solution are first discussed. Then, the stability of constant equilibrium solution and occurrence of Hopf bifurcation are detailed and analyzed by using the bifurcation (...)

This paper expands the definition of gray-marketing to include some ethically problematic marketing activities and techniques used in personal selling in China. Based on this, a conceptual model of gray-marketing for a particular type of selling in which both the sellers and the buyers exhibit problematic ethics in an exchange and the associated hypotheses are developed and tested. The findings show that, first, the respondents have different ethical evaluations of different marketing practices used in personal selling such as giving and (...)

Inter-Definability of Horn Contraction and Horn Revision.Zhiqiang Zhuang, Maurice Pagnucco & Yan Zhang - 2017 - Journal of Philosophical Logic 46 (3):299-332.
There have been a number of publications in recent years on generalising the AGM paradigm to the Horn fragment of propositional logic. Most of them focused on adapting AGM contraction and revision to the Horn setting. It remains an open question whether the adapted Horn contraction and Horn revision are inter-definable as in the AGM case through the Levi and Harper identities. In this paper, we give a positive answer by providing methods for generating contraction and revision from their dual (...)

On Translation of Literary Terminology as Cultural Sign: With Focus on Translation of Literary Terms in History of Chinese Literature.Peina Zhuang - 2017 - Cultura 14 (1):43-58.
This paper examines the translation of literary terminology as cultural sign in the selected versions of the History of Chinese Literature in the Anglophone world. It argues that classical Chinese literary terminology with its rich connotations and strong prescriptiveness as „symbol‟ in semiotics, holds great difficulty for translators and scholars. Its inherent social and cultural elements in determining the meaning of these terms cannot be transferred across cultures, thus causing problems such as „neutralization‟ either in free or literally translation or (...)

Xia also deals with the concept of icons and the Chinese concept of “face,” touching upon issues of identity and authority, and giving three Kantian “imperatives” for “spiritual” gift giving in the Chinese context.

The thorny problem, which we are confronted with in translating the term of “Sein”(Being) from western Philosophy into Chinese, highlights the ambiguity, paradoxy and vagueness of the issue of Sein from a specific viewpoint. Although there is no exact equivalent in Chinese for the word of “Sein”, we use several different words to express the meanings consisted in the issue of “Sein”. By comparison we may find that what is discussed by Zhuang Zi using the terms of “Shi” and (...)

Reading Notes on the Aesthetics of Zhuang Zi.Li Zehou - 1988 - Chinese Studies in Philosophy 20 (1):3.
If we say that the school of Confucianism—Confucius, Mencius, and Xun Zi—focused on the nurturing and forming of the psychological temperament of man, that it emphasized humanizing the innate nature so that the natural physiological desires and the sensory needs of man—that "which is unavoidable in man's nature and feelings"—are nurtured in a societal way and attain societal functions, and that for this reason the state and results of its appreciation of beauty are often related to pleasing the ear, the (...)

Zhuang Zi and His Carving of the Confucian Ox.Scott Cook - 1997 - Philosophy East and West 47 (4):521-553.
Zhuang Zi's relation to the Confucian school is reexamined. It is argued that although Zhuang Zi was fond of highlighting the absurdities of the Confucian enterprise, we can nonetheless detect in his writings a great admiration for much of what constituted the central core of the Confucian vision. This essay analyzes Confucius' image of "musical perfection," representing the total concordance of ritual restraints and harmonious freedom; traces the Confucian notion of self-cultivation through Mencius' passage on the "full-flowing energy"; (...)

Technology and the Way: Buber, Heidegger, and Lao‐Zhuang “Daoism”.Eric S. Nelson - 2014 - Journal of Chinese Philosophy 41 (3-4):307-327.
I consider the intertextuality between Chinese and Western thought by exploring how images, metaphors, and ideas from the texts associated with Zhuangzi and Laozi were appropriated in early twentieth-century German philosophy. This interest in “Lao-Zhuang Daoism” encompasses a diverse range of thinkers including Buber and Heidegger. I examine how the problematization of utility, usefulness, and “purposiveness” in Zhuangzi and Laozi becomes a key point for their German philosophical reception; how it is the poetic character of the Zhuangzi that hints (...)

    Wu-Wei: Lao-Zi, Zhuang-Zi and the Aesthetic Judgement.Rui Zhu - 2002 - Asian Philosophy 12 (1):53 – 63.
The concept of wu-wei (nonaction) has undergone significant changes from Lao-zi to Zhuang-zi. This paper will argue that, while wu-wei in Lao-zi is a utilitarian principle, wu-wei of Zhuan-zi represents an aesthetic world-view. The aesthetic nature of the Daoist nonaction will be illustrated through Kant's concept of 'purposiveness without purpose'.

Relativity of the Human World and Dao in Lao-Zhuang - an Interpretation of Chapter 1 of the Zhuangzi and of the Laozi. [REVIEW]Changchi Hao - 2005 - Asian Philosophy 15 (3):265 – 280.
In this essay I offer an interpretative reading of the first chapter in the two canonical works, the Zhuang-zi and the Lao-zi, and argue that there is an inner connection between the first chapters of the two books. My presupposition is that what Zhuang-zi has argued in "Xiao Yao You" is the theme of the relativity of the position of the human world, which is in accord with the mystery of Dao presented at the beginning of the Lao-zi. Lao Tzu and Zhuang Tzu’s Critique of Confucian Theory of Moral Community.Yonghao Yuan - 2008 - Proceedings of the Xxii World Congress of Philosophy 51:45-53.
What is called theory of moral community is a socialpolitical idea that was established by Confucius and Mencius on the base of political practice of Yao, Shun, Yu and King of Chou and that was used as ideology of ancient Chinese Empire. Lao Tzu and Zhuang Tzu criticized the theory of moral community and established their naturalistic philosophical system. Lao Tzu said in the first chapter of Tao Te Ching that “The Tao is too great to be described by (...)

Deconstructing Deconstruction: Zhuang Zi as Butterfly, Nietzsche as Gadfly.Sandra A. Wawrytko - 2008 - Philosophy East and West 58 (4):pp. 524-551.
Deconstruction and destruction tend to be viewed as a continuum, on the assumption that to deconstruct is to destroy. Deconstruction certainly seems intent on the death of definitive meaning, absolute truth, theoretical flights, and universal values. Versions of the deconstructive task have been addressed and applied by philosophers throughout history and across cultures. By examining such approaches we may learn whether deconstruction must bring destruction in its wake, or whether another outcome might be possible. To test this hypothesis the philosophy (...)

Lao-Zhuang and Augustine on the Issue of Suspension in the Philosophy of Religion.Changchi Hao - 2011 - Frontiers of Philosophy in China 6 (1):75-99.
This paper addresses the question why the issue of reason and evidence as the central concern in the mainstream contemporary philosophy of religion has to be displaced by the issue of suspension according to Lao-Zhuang and the Augustine of Hippo. For both Lao-Zhuang and Augustine, in making room for the Other to appear at the core of the self’s being, it shows that there is an inseparable relationship of the self to the Other. In suspending its own understanding, (...)

Two Paradigmatic Strategies for Reading Zhuang Zi's "Happy Fish" Vignette as Philosophy: Guo Xiang's and Wang Fuzhi's Approaches.John R. Williams - 2018 - Comparative Philosophy 9 (2).
One of the most beloved passages in the Zhuang-Zi text is a dialogue between Hui Zi and Zhuang Zi at the end of the “Qiu-shui” chapter. While this is one of many vignettes involving Hui Zi and Zhuang Zi in the text, this particular vignette has recently drawn attention in Chinese and comparative philosophy circles. The most basic question concerning these studies is whether or not the passage represents a substantial philosophical dispute, or instead idle chitchat between (...)

This paper attempts to develop a comparative approach to the dream narratives of the Daoist philosopher Zhuang Zhou and the Austrian poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal. The analogous rhetorical function of the dream in their texts links the two authors from different cultures and traditions. As will be argued, in using dreams to stress a challenging and even deconstructive view of the so-called reality, both Zhuang and Hofmannsthal articulate their skepticism against substantial notions of human subjectivity and offer an (...)
