This study examines the Korean aesthetic consciousness of colour by focusing on the preference far white in clothing culture. A nation's symbolic use of certain colours develops over time as a tradition representing the national sentiment and philosophy of life. In this way, traditional colours not only influence the senses but also evoke ideas about a country's social customs. Far example, white clothes without bleaching, artificial processing, or fancy patterns have a simple and pure beauty. This paper discusses the (...) Aesthetics is not a subject usually associated with North Korea in Western scholarship, the usual tropes being autocracy, counterfeiting, drugs, human-rights abuse, famine, nuclear weapons, party-military dictatorship, Stalinism, and totalitarianism. Where the arts are concerned, they are typically seen as crude political propaganda. Korean art and music have a long history, but aesthetic research on them has only been around for a little over a hundred years. Critiques and discourses on traditional arts such as poetry, calligraphy, and painting can be traced back to the Joseon or even Goryeo dynasties, but the modern discussion on the common features of Korean aesthetics was conducted much later than that in Western Europe, where the field of aesthetics was established in the mid (...) to late eighteenth century. Early aestheticists who tried to explain aesthetic consciousness in Korean culture and art converged on the concept of Jayeon, which can be translated provisionally as “nature,” seemingly diverging from western aesthetics’ focus on the concept of “beauty.” Jayeon shares the same Chinese characters as ziran, an early Daoist concept, but jayeon in a Korean aesthetic context does not appear to be limited to the connotation of its Chinese origin. The long Japanese tradition of Korean ceramics appreciation, closely associated with the Zen tea ceremony _(chanoyu), _has played an important role in the development of Korean aesthetics in the twentieth century. The art critic and philosopher Yanagi Soetsu was instrumental in this process during the occupation period, since, continuing in this tradition, he particularly valued Joseon ceramics for their aesthetic qualities - such as naturalness, nonchalance, and simplicity - akin to praised values in Zen Buddhism. Yanagi’s pioneering (...) writings might have been influential in the prevalence of those traits when defining Korean art and aesthetics in general. After a brief presentation of key expressions defining Korean art and aesthetics, the paper focuses on Yanagi’s aesthetic assessment of Joseon ceramics and particularly on his proposal of its appreciation beyond the modern Western division between art and craft. Korean Naturalism focuses on inner discipline by taking nature as a criterion. In this context, at the core of Korean aesthetic consciousness are inner virtues beyond superficial beauty. It may be too radical to apply Korean Naturalism to the current practice of new-media art. Nevertheless, some contemporary artists who attempt to bring back Korean tradition from a new perspective experiment with Korean Naturalism. In this study, I consider the method and concept those artists pursue as (...) evolved Naturalism with new media and a new zeitgeist. When a classic Korean painting transforms into a moving image, it is possible to experience an inward immersion and contemplation through the calm instilled in dynamism. In addition, through the installation art that intentionally composes a blank space, visitors can viscerally experience the space and unconsciously fill it with their narratives. The present-day artist's task is to correctly interpret the message contained in the tradition, rather than imitate the appearance of traditional art without the spirit. The artist should inculcate this attitude to accomplish historical continuity, which is an essential element for experimenting with conventional Korean artworks and aesthetic consciousness. (shrink)

Cho Jihoon’s aesthetics is based on the Confucian literati’s spirit, choesado, and on the Buddhist idea of non-duality. He presented the theory of meot, meaning taste originally, as a Korean-specific aesthetic category in his Study of Meot, where he synthesized the previously discussed theories of other scholars into twelve elements. Discussing the formal characteristics of works that have the aesthetic quality of meot, he took unrefinedness as basic, and cited diversity, eurhythmy, and curvature as its subtraits. Discussing the (...) compositional power or method of expression that provokes meot, he took hyperstandard as basic, and the subtraits include maturity, distortion, and playfulness. Furthermore, he discussed meot as an emotion or idea that Koreans live with, where the most basic one is otiosity (impracticality), and assimilation, moderation, and optimism are its subtraits. Finally, he identified meot as the ultimate aesthetic state with pungryu, a lifestyle in harmony with Nature, which is originated from the ancient Silla period. (shrink)

This paper explores global K-pop's negotiation and reconstruction of Korean aesthetics via the dismantling, adoption, appropriation, and transfiguring of central elements of Korean traditional culture. Recently, K-pop groups have been incorporating traditional music and dance (gugak), traditional attire (hanbok), traditional houses (hanok), and old palaces (gogung) into music videos disseminated globally over digital platforms like YouTube. In their efforts to incorporate more 'Koreanness' into their musical productions and neutralize criticisms of their use of the 'K' prefix as (...) inauthentic and unconnected to Korean aesthetics, groups like BTS and BLACKPINK are redefining 'K-heritage' for music consumers worldwide. Along with other globally consumed Hallyu productions like K-movies, K-dramas, and K-games, K-Pop is in the process of reconstructing Koreans' and the world's view of the meaning of Korean-ness. Cultural factors are operating in the aesthetic experience of pictorial realism, occurring in a transcultural manner, and their effects are salient in beholder’s affective reaction correlated with perceptual-cognitive operation. This paper aims to demonstrate this hypothesis, by developing two analytical tools that might explain the anti-hedonic valence of Hong Taeyong, an eighteenth-century Korean literatus’ aesthetic experience of a Western religious fresco depicting the Lamentation of Christ in a Jesuit Catholic church in Beijing. First, a complex multifold conflict between «actual (...) affect» and culturally modeled «ideal affect», operating simultaneously in his visual experience, might be translated into a highly negative valence of his global affective state. Second, the variance of processing fluencies at different levels would have made his global processing operation less fluid, and it might play a role in his negative affective valence, since the affect is inherent in processing fluency signal. Abstract:This essay addresses the largely unrecognized art of a former comfort woman, Duk-kyung Kang (1929–1997). Comfort women were forced sexual slaves for the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second World War. By analyzing how both postcolonial and decolonial aesthetics are embodied in her paintings, the potential of her art to challenge colonialism becomes pronounced.

The genre of fable tends to be overlooked in the study of Korean literary history on the ground that the genre seems too archaic to reflect the aesthetic standards established in the modern European novel, in which the focus lies in the realistic representation of the individual or contemporary society. However, the genre was not completely abandoned by modern Korean writers. Few critics have noted the continuing role played by the rich Korean fable tradition, which eventually made (...) the reinvention of the genre in the mass media possible. In particular, it is worth noting that there was the emergence of a new subgenre of fable in the late nineteenth century: that is, fabulous court case fiction, which is quite distinct from the Chinese literary tradition that had underprivileged imaginative narrative texts under the absolute domination of Confucian historiography. The genre of fabulous court case fiction makes us reconsider the plurality of narrative forms and various narrative functions. In this study, I examine how imaginative narrative texts such as fables simultaneously pursue the pleasure of storytelling and the purposes of both moral and specialized education. (shrink)

In this essay, I discuss Korean artists’ multi-layered, internal motives for engaging in artistic practices: their artistic devotion derives from their desires for moral self-cultivation, self-enjoyment, and self-forgetting. I speculate that these tendencies were intensified in Korean cultural traditions by distinctive sociopolitical circumstances of the Joseon period under the dominance of Neo-Confucianism, such as a fixed social hierarchy and Sino-centrist perspectives. 미적 감정주의는 미적 가치평가가 감정 반응에 근거한다는 생각이다. 이 글에서 나는 미적 감정주의에 기초하여 미적 감정이 있다고 주장하는 두 관점인 환원주의와 수정주의를 비판적으로 검토한다. 경이 환원주의는 비인지주의 감정 이론을 전제하고 미적 감상이 경이 감정으로 환원된다고 주장한다. 다수 감정 환원주의는 인지주의나 비인지주의를 전제하지 않고 미적 감상이 다수의 감정으로 이루어진 한 부류로 환원된다고 주장한다. 반면 수정주의는 감상 감정인 미적 감정이 별도의 감정적 기능인 완성적 기능을 갖기에 독자적인 감정 유형으로 분류돼야 한다고 주장한다. 그러나 환원주의는 개념 예술 감상을 적절하게 설명하지 못한다는 문제를 가진다. 이에 (...) 더해, 경이 환원주의는 재조정을 통해 미적 경이의 지향적 대상을 구성하는 데 취약하고, 다수 감정 환원주의는 미적 가치평가의 근거가 감정이 아닌 다른 반응이나 태도일 가능성을 간과하는 문제를 가진다. 한편 수정주의는 감정의 완성적 기능과 정감적 평가가 개념적으로 충돌하는 문제를 드러내며, 직접 경험 원칙에서 벗어나는 예술 감상 사례를 설명하지 못한다. 그러므로 나는 환원주의와 수정주의가 모두 성공적이지 않다고 결론 내린다. 그림을 보거나 음악을 듣는 것을 즐기는 일은 예술작품을 감상하는(appreciate) 일과 관련된다. 그러나 감상의 대상을 오직 예술작품으로만 간주하는 것은 논란의 여지가 있다. 왜냐하면 감상의 대상에는 예술작품만 있는 것이 아니며 해당 작품을 항상 미적으로만 감상할 필요도 없기 때문이다. 그렇다면 자연환경이나 자연적 대상은 어떠한가? 이는 우리가 비예술적 활동 영역과 같은 일상 혹은 자연환경의 영역에서 예술에 대한 다양한 착상을 얻기 때문에 제기할 수 있는 물음으로 이해할 수 있다. 최근, 앤더슨(Erik Anderson)은 자연환경과 같은 비예술적 활동 영역에서 발생하는 침묵(silence)을 미적으로 감상할 수 있다고 주장한다. 나아가 그는 (...) 침묵에 대한 미적 감상이 우리 삶에 기여하는 바가 분명하므로 가치 있는 미적 경험이라고 덧붙인다. 하지만 침묵을 미적으로 감상할 수 있다는 앤더슨의 주장은 우리의 직관과 다소 거리가 있어 보인다. 왜냐하면 침묵이란 소리의 부재(absence)를 의미하며 그러한 상태에는 감상할 만한 미적 특징이 전혀 없어 보이기 때문이다. 만약 침묵에 주목할 만한 미적 특징이 전혀 없다면, 침묵에 대한 미적 감상은 불가능할 것이다. 필자는 이 글에서 침묵에 대한 미적 감상이 가능하다는 앤더슨의 주장을 비판적으로 음미하고 그 한계를 보이고자 한다. 뵈메의 시각으로 서포터즈의 퍼포먼스에 주목해서 프로 축구경기의 미학적 의미를 고찰하고, 이를 통해서 축구 미학은 물론 더 나아가서 스포츠 미학을 새로운 관점에서 접근하는 길을 환기시키는 것이 논문의 목적이다. 이러한 목적에 상응하는 연구의 내용은 다음과 같다. 먼저 ‘분위기’ 및 ‘분위기 머금은 현상’ 개념을 중심으로 뵈메의 ‘지각학으로서의 미학’의 핵심이 검토된다. 이는 축구경기의 미학적 의미를 전통미학의 틀에서 벗어나서 논구할 수 있는 기초를 다지는 것을 의미한다. 다음으로 축구경기에서 만들어지는 분위기, 즉 축구경기의 특정 상황에서 형성되는 경기장 전체의 분위기가 ‘극적인 골’ 사건에 초점을 맞춰 검토된 뒤, 그것이 (...) 어떻게 미학적 대상이 되는가 하는 점이 구명된다. 다시 말해서 극적인 골 직후 조성되는 경기장 분위기가 기본적으로 목적성취 혹은 욕구충족에 기인하는 것임에도 불구하고, 어째서 미학적 사건이라고 할 수 있는가 하는 점, 어째서 욕구충족과 무관한 지각경험의 대상이라 할 수 있는가 하는 점이 해명된다. 아울러 그 사건이 ‘분위기 머금은 현상’으로 표현되고 전달될 때, 그것은 이른바 직관 팬뿐만 아니라 모든 사람에게 미학적 대상이 되는데, 이것이 구체적으로 무엇을 의미하는 것인가 하는 점도 밝혀진다. 마지막으로 ‘축구경기의 미학적 의미’를 새로운 관점에서, 좀 더 정확히 말해서 뵈메의 관점에서 조망하고자 할 경우, 욕구대상으로서의 축구경기가 지각의 대상으로 전환될 때 일반 팬이 감지하게 되는 ‘성과사회의 그물코를 벗어나지 못한 삶에 처해있음’의 의미가 다각도로 논구되는 것이 무엇보다도 필요가 있다는 사실이 언급된다. 이러한 내용을 담고 있는 본 논문은 몇 가지 한계에도 불구하고 전통 미학의 틀에서 벗어나서 스포츠 미학 담론을 새로운 시각에서 새롭게 논의하는 것이 필요하고 또 충분히 가능하다는 사실을 환기시켜주는 데에는 기여할 수 있을 것이다. A metaphor is an effective way to show how something is to be conceived. In this article, I look at two Neo-Confucian Korean philosophical contexts—the Four-Seven debate and Book of the Imperial Pivot—and suggest that metaphors are philosophically expedient in two further contexts: when both intellect and emotion must be addressed; and when the aim of philosophizing is to produce behavioral change. Because Neo-Confucians had a conception of the mind that closely connected it to the heart (心 xin), metaphor’s (...) empathy-inducing and perspective-giving capacities made it an especially helpful mode of philosophizing in the history of Korean philosophy. To Korean people by the end of the 19th century who had previously enjoyed only traditional music genres, the music introduced by the hands of the missionaries must have been very new and unfamiliar. One hundred and a few decades since the meagre beginning of the meeting between the two has now passed, Korea has transformed into a modernized society where all kinds of music are performed and enjoyed, among which Western classical and popular music exist with considerable weight. (...) In the course of the development, there were constant exchanges between Korean traditional music and Western music. Korean traditional music has been subject at one end to defensive modification under the motto of transmission and at another end to aggressive destruction of some core aspects of the tradition under the motto of re-creation. ‘다중양상성’은 다양한 맥락에서 상이한 의미로 이해된다. 이 글에서 ‘다중양상성’은 음악의 미적 경험에서 지각과 의식이 신경 토대 연결망을 통해 인지적으로 동기화(synchronization)되는 방식을 가리킨다. 이 과정을 도식적으로 말하면, 우선 시각, 청각, 촉각 등 다양한 감각 자료들이 뇌의 피질 안에 분산된 전문 모듈들에 의해 신경적으로 처리‧저장된다. 심적 상태가 생물학적으로 저장되는 것이다. 이후 어떤 시점에서, 주체가 음악의 특수한 청각적 국면에 주목할 때 비청각적인 신경적 자료들은 활성화되어 중앙 의식에 합류한다. 즉 중앙 의식의 요구에 부응하여 생물학적 데이터가 심적 상태로 변환되고 현재화되며, 이에 따라 주체의 청각 경험은 (...) 상이한 지각 양상들과 앙상블을 이룬다. 이 단계에서 기억과 사고가 참여하여 주도적으로 서사적 해석을 구성할 수도 있으나 이것은 주체의 관심사에 달린 문제이다.BR 본 논의의 직접적인 초점은 음악에 있지만, 다중양상성 논제는 예술 일반에 확대 적용될 수 있다. 왜냐하면, 첫째로, 다중양상성 논제는 매체 지각의 다양성을 뜻하는 것이 아니라 예술 감상자가 작품 전체의 형식으로서 투사하는, 자기 표상적인 의식에 다름 아니기 때문이다. 둘째로, 예술 감상자가 미적 주목을 통해 가상적으로 투사하는 통합적인 작품 형식은 그가 현재 의식적으로 주목하는 작품의 지각적 면모들뿐만 아니라, 그 자료들을 추상하여 전체 형식으로 구성하는 과정에 개입하는 상이한 양태의 ‘지각 흔적’들과 개념적 사고틀이 산출하는 다중양상적 앙상블이기 때문이다. 이렇게 인지적으로 동기화된 앙상블을 가능하게 하는 것은 다름 아니라 의식 아래 차원에서 작동하는 다양한 지각 모듈들과 그것들을 연결해주는 비의식적인 신경 연결망이다. 따라서 비록 ‘신경미학’이 고차적 사고, 지향성, 예술사적 지식 등이 어떻게 예술 경험에 관여하는지를 직접 설명하기 어렵지만, 적어도 신경 토대가 어떻게 미적 경험의 대상인 자기 표상적 의식의 형성을 가능하게 하는지를 보여줄 수 있다. 롱기누스는 시, 비극, 수사학에서 장엄함과 경이로움으로 경탄을 불러일으키는 것, 내적 힘이 작용하여 우리의 영혼이 고양되고 기쁨으로 충만하게 되는 것을 진정한 숭고로 정의한다. 이 글은 롱기누스의 숭고론에 기초하여 숭고의 기원과 미적 현상을 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 고대 그리스 신화, 디오니소스 제전, 비극은 숭고가 뮤즈 신의 영감을 얻어 시를 노래하는 시인으로부터 시작되었으며, 신적 열광에 사로잡힌 사람들의 광기, 격정, 해방감, 즐거움에 기초한 미적 현상임을 말해준다. 숭고는 시, 음악, 춤을 통해 탈아와 영감, 광기, 카타르시스를 경험할 때의 심미적 현상이다. 영감에 사로잡혀 자신의 일상적 자아를 망각하는 것, (...) 광기를 통해 영원한 것, 아름다운 것, 위대한 것을 보는 것, 음악적 감화를 통해 혹은 모방된 사건을 통해 정화를 경험하는 것이 숭고 현상이다. 플라톤은 숭고 현상을 시인이 영감과 광기를 통해 신적인 것을 보는 것으로 이해하지만 아리스토텔레스는 무대 위에 연출된 사건을 통해 연민과 공포, 쾌감을 간접적으로 환기하는 것으로 이해한다. 롱기누스는 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스의 관점을 비판적으로 수용하면서 신적 성질이 언어의 기술을 통해 환기될 수 있다는 입장을 취한다. 즉, 자연과 기술이 상보적 관계를 맺고 있을 때 숭고가 위험에 노출되지 않고 그 목적을 달성할 수 있다고 본다. 고대 그리스에서 숭고는 단지 쾌락이나 감정의 흥분이 아니라 인간이 자기 한계 너머로까지 생명력을 확장해 가고자 하는 의지와 열정, 욕망에 기초한 생명철학적 가치를 지닌다. Experiences in the heart is one matter and literary writing is another: Toegye (1501-1570, a famous Korean Confucianist), however, would rather regard the two as a completely unified process, which amalgamates an immanent quality and a literary style, without isolation between them. Toegye stressed and valued the purity of the first experience, i.e., the filtered and the purified in the heart, which would flow into the second experience and purify it as well, ultimately cultivating it into a complete aesthetic (...) experience. Poetry should be solely triggered by positive emotions, being aesthetically clear and pure, with no extravagance inside. A plain and ordinary style of literary writing is thereby formed and is regarded as a natural access of transcendence to a philosophical, ethical, and aesthetic connotation which is pure, rich, and profound, 'shaping to Sagehood' in Confucianism. Emotion plays the role of a cementing force that unifies all these factors and sections for life aestheticization. (shrink)

이 논문은 윌리엄 모리스(William Morris 1834-1896)의 노동과 여가 개념을 분석하고 우리 시대의 대안적 모델로서 가능성을 탐구하는데 있다. 모리스는 예술과 노동의 관계를 설명하면서 노동을 하나의 창조적 생산 활동으로 분석하고 이것을 미적 활동이라고 규정했다. 여가는 노동에 수반되어야하는 휴식으로 노동의 원동력으로 생각했다.BR 모리스는 자신이 주장한 예술 이념으로부터 노동의 본질을 탐구했다. 그러므로 그의 사상 중심에는 예술이 있다. 예술가이면서 사회주의자이기도 했던 그는 예술이 우리의 삶을 아름답게 변화시킬 수 있듯이 사회도 변화시킬 수 있다는 강한 믿음을 가졌다. 그에게 예술은 우리 일상의 모든 사물과 환경이었고 이것을 제작하는 노동자는 (...) 예술 제작자였다. 이러한 생각으로부터 그는 노동의 본질을 이끌어냈고 여가의 필요성을 주장했다.BR 모리스의 사상적 배경에는 당시의 19세기 영국 사회의 상황이 있다. 산업혁명 이후, 공방과 공장에서 생산했던 일상용품은 비교 할 수 없을 정도로 질적인 차이가 있었다. 공장에서는 저급한 디자인과 품질의 일상용품을 생산했다. 이와 같은 이유에서 모리스는 기계중심의 공장 생산에 반대했으며 러다이트(Luddite) 운동을 지지했다. 그리고 생산 환경, 노동 환경의 변화만이 일상용품의 미를 회복할 수 있다고 주장했다.BR 이 논문에서는 그의 미학 사상을 토대로 예술 개념과 노동의 역학 관계를 살펴보고 미적활동으로서 노동 본질이 무엇인지를 고찰하고자 했다. 그리고 노동에 따른 여가를 어떻게 파악하고 설명하고 있는지를 분석한 다음, 그의 여가 개념과 우리 시대의 여가 개념을 함께 고민하고자 했다. This article explores the unusually high levels of cosmetic surgery in South Korea – for both women and men. We argue that existing explanations, which draw on feminist and postcolonial positions, presenting cosmetic surgery as pertinent only to female and non-western bodies found lacking by patriarchal and racist/imperialist economies, miss important cultural influences. In particular, focus on western cultural hegemony misses the influence in Korea of national identity discourses and traditional Korean beliefs and practices such as physiognomy. We show (...) how these beliefs provide a more ‘gendered’ as opposed to feminist analysis, which allows space for discussion of men’s surgeries. Finally, we critique the accepted notion of the ‘western body’, especially its position in some literature as a more unobtainable ideal for non-western than for western women. We argue that this body has little in common with actual western women’s bodies, and more in common with a globalized image, embodying idealized elements from many different cultures. (shrink)

숲에 관한 관심이 뜨겁게 달아오르고 있다. 이는 ‘생태적 삶의 추구’가 일종의 시대정신이 된 상황과 밀접하게 연관되어 있다. 그런데 이러한 현상이 명실상부한 생태적 삶으로 이어지고 있다고 보기 어렵다. 본고는 이를 비판적으로 고찰하고, 더 나아가 숲에 관한 생태학적 인식과 실제 삶이 괴리되지 않도록 하는 데 일조하려는 시도의 일환이다.BR 이를 위해서 논자는 ‘뵈메(G. Böhme)가 말하는 생태적 자연미학’의 관점에서 숲을 조망하고자 한다. 뵈메가 강조하는 영국식 정원과 조경술은 숲에 관한 생태학적 연구와 보통 사람들이 일상에서 접하는 숲 체험이 괴리되지 않고 조화를 이루는 데로 나아가는 실마리를 제공한다. (...) 특히 조경술의 실천과 지침이 그렇다.BR 본고는 그러한 실마리를 바탕으로 특정한 숲(화담숲)에 대한 생태미학적 조망을 시도한다. 이를 통해서 조경술이 시사하는 ‘가로지름의 실천’에 기초한 숲의 생태미학적 조망은 보통 사람들이 일상에서 자연/인공의 이분법의 덫을 넘어 ‘자연과, 숲과 억지스럽게 않게 어우러지는 삶’의 가능성을 열어준다는 사실이 드러난다. 요컨대 숲은 평범한 사람이 자신의 일상과 괴리되지 않는 방식으로, 즉 몸으로 느끼고 감지하는 감성적 방식으로, 자연적인 것/인공적인 것의 이분법에서 벗어나서, 자연의 소리에 귀를 기울이게 해주고, 자연의 사고에 다가가게끔 해주는 특별한 체험의 개방된 공간이라는 사실이 숲의 생태미학적 조망을 통해서 개시된다는 점이 논구된다. 영국의 산업혁명은 정치, 사회, 경제, 문화적 측면에서 급진적인 변화를 가져왔다. 영국에서는 노동 기회가 확대되었고 여성 노동자들에게 고용기회가 주어졌다. 이에 따라 여성들의 사회적 참여가 많아졌다. 그러나 여성 노동자들은 빈번한 실업과 열악한 노동환경 속에서 고통 받았다. 더군다나 가사노동까지 맡아야 했던 당시의 상황에서 여성 노동자들은 여러 면에서 힘든 생활을 보낼 수밖에 없었다. 반면에 노동의 현장에서 일을 하지 않아도 되었던 여성들은 전통적인 여성관에 사로잡혀 있었다. 여성의 자리는 가정이라는 인식이 강화되었고 남성 노동자들은 아내가 가정에 안주할 수 있도록 최선의 노력을 다하여야 한다고 생각하였다.BR 이와 같은 사회적 (...) 배경에서 모리스는 『미지에서 온 소식(News from Nowhere)』이라는 자신의 소설에서 당시의 사회적 관념과 다른 여성관을 제시한다. 그는 소설에 등장하는 엘렌 (Ellen)과 클라라(Clara)등의 인물을 통해 다양한 여성 캐릭터를 제시하면서 여성과 남성의 권리가 균형을 이루고 가족 내 의무를 통해 평등을 창출해야한다는 진보적인 관점을 제시하였다. 그는 노동이 남성의 고유한 일은 아니라는 확신을 가지고 있었다. 모리스의 미학에서 노동 개념은 미적 활동으로서 예술 개념에 대한 사유가 함께 하고 있다. 따라서 노동의 즐거움이 삶의 중요한 요소이면서 미적인 삶으로 이끄는 동인이기도 하다. 여성노동자들도 남성과 동일하게 노동에서 즐거움을 느껴야 한다고 생각했다. 남녀 모두의 노동은 곧 미적인 제품 생산과 미적인 삶의 질을 가져온다는 자신의 미학 체계에서 여성의 노동 문제를 바라보았다. 그러나 모리스는 여성 노동 문제에 대한 실천적 접근에서 현실의 벽에 종종 부딪쳤다. 비록 모리스는 당시의 현실적인 상황을 완전히 해결하지 못했지만 여성의 지위, 역할, 교육에 대한 인식은 여성 노동에 대한 중요한 인식이라고 할 수 있다.
