    Towards a Philosophy of Academic Publishing.M. Peters, P. Jandric, R. Irwin, K. Locke, N. Devine, R. Heraud, A. Gibbons, T. Besley, J. White, D. Forster, L. Jackson, E. Grierson, C. Mika, G. Stewart, M. Tesar, S. Brighouse, S. Arndt, G. Lazaroiu, R. Mihaila, C. Legg & L. Benade - 2016 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 48 (14):1401-1425.
This article is concerned with developing a philosophical approach to a number of significant changes to academic publishing, and specifically the global journal knowledge system wrought by a range of new digital technologies that herald the third age of the journal as an electronic, interactive and mixed-media form of scientific communication. The paper emerges from an Editors' Collective, a small New Zealand-based organisation comprised of editors and reviewers of academic journals mostly in the fields of education and philosophy. The paper (...)

Silence, Words That Wound and Sexual Identity: A Conversation with Applebaum.Liz Jackson - 2008 - Journal of Moral Education 37 (2):225-238.
In this paper, I continue a conversation initiated by Barbara Applebaum on how to manage irreconcilable difference, harmful language or 'words that wound' and various implications of power in the classroom. Referencing emerging works on the nature of speech and silence, classroom power and queer identity, I pose three questions to Applebaum in order to continue thinking through the timely situations with which she grapples. What is the nature of reasonableness is the classroom setting? Must speech reflect power; and silence, (...)

Education and the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement.Liz Jackson & Timothy O'Leary - 2016 - Educational Philosophy and Theory:1-6.
This special issue of Educational Philosophy and Theory considers the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement as an educational event, which has impacted attitudes and outlooks and conceptions of young people’s role, of education, and of society. This essay serves as an introduction to the more substantive pieces that follow. It describes two alternative perspectives on youth civic engagement in Hong Kong historically; and in so doing, it addresses some of the challenges related to free academic expression that hinder scholarly research and (...)

The Smiling Philosopher: Emotional Labor, Gender, and Harassment in Conference Spaces.Liz Jackson - forthcoming - Educational Philosophy and Theory:1-9.
Conference environments enable diverse roles for academics. However, conferences are hardly entered into by participants as equals. Academics enter into and experience professional environments differently according to culture, gender, race, ethnicity, class, and more. This paper considers from a philosophical perspective entering and initiating culturally into academic conferences as a woman. It discusses theories of gender and emotional labor and emotional management, focusing on Arlie Hochschild’s foundational work, and affect in gendered social relations, considering Sara Ahmed’s theorization of the feminist (...)

A Different Path: Why Stanley Cavell Won't Get to the Point.Larry Jackson - 2015 - Journal of Speculative Philosophy 29 (4):503.
It must have been maddening to be a student of Socrates—all those questions, all that walking, and never knowing where any of it was leading. That is probably why you will not find much sauntering in philosophy today. The detours and digressions of dialogue have long since given way to directness and debate. Philosophers do not just foster a vague sense of wonder any longer: they present well-formulated, logical claims. Conclusions follow premises; argumentation trumps aporia. This undoubtedly has its advantages. Science, (...)

Becoming, Learning, Being.Tim McCarthy & Lucas Jackson - 2012 - Questions: Philosophy for Young People 12:14-17.
Tim McCarthy and Lucas Jackson present a short story in which a group of scientists successfully create a self-aware synthetic human being. Calling himself HBP, the machine begins to quickly learn and becomes curious about the world, life, and humanity. On his first trip alone outside of the lab, HBP accidentally kills a mugger. The encounter trouble him and HBP begins to wonder what happens to a being’s consciousness after life. McCarthy and Jackson use this story to explore the concept (...)

Richard Wright and Black Radical Discourse: The Advocacy of Violence.Lawrence Jackson - 2004 - Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy 7 (4):200-226.
In a career that spanned a quarter of a century, Richard Wright used literature to struggle for the rights of Africans and Asians and to combat colonialism. Like Franz Fanon, whose thinking Wright?s books overtly influenced, Wright deployed sociological and psychological insights in his fiction to advance the causes of non?white humanity during the end of the colonial era. But Wright?s great leap in understanding, not withstanding his global fame and notoriety, revolved around his regular use of violence in his (...)

Knowledge and Practice of Confidential Data Handling in the Welsh Deanery: A Brief Report.L. E. Jackson & M. W. Lim - 2011 - Journal of Medical Ethics 37 (1):58-60.
Recent large-scale personal data loss incidents highlighted the need for public bodies to more securely handle confidential data. We surveyed trainees from all specialties in the Welsh Deanery for their knowledge and practice. All registered trainees were invited to participate in an online anonymised survey. There were 880 completed and non-duplicated responses (52.9% response rate). Responses were analysed using Microsoft Access. Over 40% (388/880 (44.1%)) did not use formal guidelines on storage or disposal of confidential data. The majority appeared to (...)
